New motherboard without reinstall(I did it)

Its seems its always been the philosophy to reinstall windows(xp) when you install a new motherboard but I wanted to know wether you really could do it without reinstallation.I did a search and came up with this:

http://arstechnica.com/hardware/news/2007/09/how-to-install-a-new-motherboard-without-reinstalling-windows.ars

Actually I was unable to uninstall the motherboard drivers(Asus/Via) but I think because it was another Asus/Via motherboard it went ok no issues with booting and running games. When Ive tried to run Windows before on a new motherboard its gone mad and given blue screen etc so I was happy this worked.

One thing though you will have to reactivate anything that has some sort of telephone/internet activation so be cautious of that.

I'm probably going to have to do that soon. My motherboard was defective when it arrived but since I had no computer at the time I just went with it...and now it seems to be getting worse. Luckily that will be one of the cheaper things to upgrade although it really isn't outdated. I'll have to keep that link in mind when I finally fix the damn thing.

Thats what lifetime warranties are for. EVGA FTW!

I'm pretty sure mine has a lifetime warranty, but wouldn't I need to send it in for them to verify and wait for them to send a replacement? I don't know if I can live that long without a computer. The internet is my life-force...

What kind of nerd are you? Your suppose to have more than one computer. I got the cheap laptop for internet/school work/traveling, the computer in my office for when I am working there, and the gaming desktop at home for everything else.

The typically poor kind. A computer is provided for me at work, I have my desktop at home for gaming/whatever, and I'm out of school; I have no real use for a laptop anymore.

I'll just bide my time. It still works and runs great, just a bit annoying with some things.

In my experience most nerds have ****tier computer setups than their jock counterparts. I guess because they're tightasses.

I dual boot XP and Vista via bios, have 2 smaller Boot drives and 2 data 1 TB SATA drives (yes this requires physical drive changes) with full copy's of both systems and just found out the reason I never have a problem is AMD.
http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/77909774/m/1400925745

"SATA INTEL NOTE
Now, go into Device Manager, select "Show Hidden Devices" from the menu, and enter Non-Plug and Play Devices.

Unless you now look under "Non-Plug and Play Devices" and delete "IntelIDE" and "IntelPPM", you will get a failure after the swap.
My discovery comment is on page 8 of this thread.
This is a problem with WindowsXP SP2's SATA drivers for Intel systems and is not present on AMD systems. Indeed, it only manifests when leaving an Intel system to go to an AMD one.

Finished all that rebooting? You're half way there."

I'v swopped out a motherboard once, and no problems. As long as all other devices stay put,I do not see a problem, except maybe if you go from single core to dual or quad.
If you are using motherboard drivers, all bets are off, but it should work if it is from the same manufacturer?

Re: New motherboard without reinstall(I did it)

Since we are all on the subject, and I think my problem is related, I'm going to change gears a bit:

My computer works fine and all, once it is booted. The only problem that I have is around 50% of the time I turn it on it won't get far past the BIOS screen. The computer says something along the lines of "Cannot boot from device; restart or insert boot media". The hard disk and dvd-rom drives are all plugged in and whatnot, but sometimes the computer doesn't recognize that the hard drive is there. I've gone through the bios crap and all, drivers are all up to date, etc. Is this just a faulty motherboard? Should I just try a different SATA plug?

BTW, I don't know if it's related, but the ethernet connection on the motherboard was broken out of the box so I know at least part of the motherboard is borked.

I would not live with that, lifes too short.

I'm going to try rebuilding backing/restoring a image of the XP part of my duel boot on a better motherboard and building a media center Tivo box downstairs on the new hardware - if it works

"
Cannot boot from device; restart or insert boot media".
1)Try setting your boot sequence to C:/ =first (BIOS), so that it does not try to boot from floppy or CD . 2) Maybe your HDD cable is defective. 3) HDD defective? 4) You might have a virus .
I don't think it is the motherboard.

1. It's not that; sometimes it doesn't even recognize that there is a C:/ so I guess it defaults to whatever it does find.

2. Maybe, I'll get a new one and see how that works.

3. I thought about that but a friend of mine says it probably isn't the case if it works otherwise (when the computer recognizes the drive is actually there).

4. I don't think virus since it did this before I was even connected to the internet; ever since I built it the problem has occurred.

I'll try the new HDD cable first since that will likely be cheapest. I'll probably get a new, fairly small hard drive for booting and such later (like 50-80gb) and see if that changes anything. Maybe I could also get the motherboard company to send me a new one before I send in the old one...

Re: New motherboard without reinstall(I did it)

My guess your partition table is bit ****ed. That has caused some boot problems for me as well, especially with MS. But than you would probably have only faulty boots.
I am no expert though.
