New Ladder Char, Alternatives to Meteorb

Hi, a while ago I was playing single player and asking here for help w/ a meteorb. She made it to mat lvl88 w/o much problems and was able to solo hell on /players4. I was very pleased with the character.

Now I have a mind to try the ladder scene once more, and want a character with a similar versatility but not that exact build. I am starting untwinked w/ no means to good items off the bat. I know the popular starter is a Blizzard sorc but I'm worried that it comes at the expense of not being to do a lot of spots such as countess and simply too specialized. Right now I am trying to decide between Blizzball (too much synergies ?), CL/Orb or just remaking my SP Meteorb again.

Any input would be welcome.

I've been having fun with blizzball myself. It's a nice change of pace form meteorb. IMO, more fun and tactical. Plus i like versatility.

I've been using a Frozen Orb with Firewall sorc in HC ladder this season, now level 80. She's awesome. Orb as you know is just good always, and firewall, with a tiny amount of thought involved, is devastating.

It's

20 orb
20 cold mastery
20 firewall
20 fire mastery
and I put 5 to telport for MF

You have a good amount of skillpoints, as you don't use synergies. With only +4 skills I'm doing 350 orb damage and 5000 per second firewall damage.

The best bit (especially for HC) is that firewall can be cast perpendicular, so you can kill stuff you can't see through doors and tunnels that are 90 degrees to you (maggot lair is a piece of piss!). It's kind of like hydra in it's safety in tight places, but probably the damage is better than hydra.

I made this build cos I've made so many sorcs (I keep dying in HC but this is my first level 80 HCLadder!) and I'm sick of fireball or blizzard, and I don't (or rather didn't before MFing) have the items to make a CL Orb a killing machine.

So yeah, try the Orb Firewall, you don't need synergies to pwn hell!

I Vote for Nova/Fo(or FO/Nova as some call it)

Mine is only 43 at the moment, but she really rocks. IMO the only really neccesary item is a frostburns, and if you don't have that, just max orb first, so your mana pool isn't drained too quick.

I've already seen that writeup, and my worries about it are two front:

1. It relies quite a bit on hit recovery under /players1, whereas I hope to be mfing in full games a bit

2. sirpoopsalot's build was completely decked out, I'm on the opposite end of the wealth spectrum

Chain lightning / frozen orb.

Chain lightning kills Nihlatak so fast that I'm often only faced by a pile of 14000 gold where I expected him to be -- and she can MF too, if you're willing to sacrifice hell council.
Pindleskin is easy -- as he can't be Cold AND Lightning immune -- besides, chain lightning is devestating in groups.

I switched my MF sorc's gear over to my chain lightning sorc... and I've yet to switch back.
Old Mf sorc was blizzballer -- new is chain lightning / frozen orb, capable of doing every single run imagineable from countess to mephisto and ancient tunnels.

How item dependent is that? Right now I only have 34FCR monarch, 30fcr spirit sw, peasant crown, lowish viper. I do have a pcomb which I am trying to trade though. Is that enough for a effective CL/orb sorc?

What is a good item set up for the CL/orb? How do you run meph w/o moat trick?

Currently I have a CL/Orb sorc and it is devasting, have +4skills, +2 Chain lightning, and with FO and lightning P3 NM meph goes down relatively quickly. (currently act 5 nightmare)

Currently I have a defiance merc and he has about 13% life Leech with 3k defense and 75 in all is resists, so meph hardly hits him. I normally static meph to 25%/50% depending on NM/Hell then, get a decent range to make FO explode inside of him, then go FO/Lite/FO/Lite and in my mf gear i dont have any FCR atm but I do have 75 in all resists (until i switch weapon/shield for extra mf).

Im really enjoying it, however it is very mana draining, atm Insight with level 1(5) Warmth can hardly keep my mana up if i spam FO and CL/L
