New - Help "My only hope..."

First off - New guy to both Diablo II (played initial release never expansion) and this site/forums. So in advance I'd like to say hello and a big hearty thank you for helping me with my issues.

And were off.... I have Windows 7 - Installed Diablo II from battle.net. Single player works fine. I wanted to try and connect with an old chum via battle.net and/or TCP. Diablo II says NO - unable to verify versions. So I spent hours asking Dr. Google, this forum, blizzard support, etc. Nothing - well something... here's where I need you.

I can run the game as an administrator. It will connect to battle.net no problems. The issue is that it shows a earlier version of my single player character. Single character is lvl 24 - battle.net character 15. No matter what combination I do - changing the game compatibility, admin/or not admin, etc. Nothing seems to work.

All I want to do is connect to battle.net/TCP and play with my chum using my lvl 24. You are my only hope...

im not sure if we have an Obi Wan Kenobi here, but ill do my best

make sure you and your friend are patched to the same version (1.13c is the latest)
    found here
    http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?locale=en_US&articleId=20758

you can play on closed battle.net realms (does not use your sp chars) with eachother

if you want to use your sp chars you can, but
but one of you will need to forward ports 6112 and 4000 on your router/modem to the host pc

then the host will need to visit http://www.whatismyip.com then the guest can connect to that ip address

http://portforward.com/ has instructions for games on most routers/modems
