I upgraded last summer to a loaded MBP 15''.

Your rig is a beast, I'm jealous. Are you doing sound/video work on it or just graphic stuff?

Graphic and flash work. I'm capable of doing some video work here and there, but it's rare that a client will use their designer for that. Usually it's just reprocessing an already existing video for different usage.

I wish I had money to upgrade. Right now I have AMD 64 3200+, 2 GB ram, 7800GT video card. I just got Frontlines: Fuel of War hoping that I would be able to run it with the graphics all the way down, but no beans :( I'm broke and can't afford the $450 to upgrade to what I would need.

    Re: new compy

Yeah, that's right. Intel has a requirement that those processors/chipsets not be marketed towards the home user, I think at first the Mac Pros had to have "Workstation" somewhere on the pages talking about them. Not too many apps can actually use that many cores, but Leopard will spread everything out as evenly as possible. I think photoshop and at least the rendering for flash will do two cores.

    Re: new compy

Big mac is such a joke. I'm surprised that having "big" in the name does'nt count as false advertising because that hamburger is about as big as 5 coins stacked on top of eachother.

Yeah it's so the mac user can step into it then step out into an alternate future where the french conquered the world and everyone walks around wearing black and white striped shirts, tiny berets, a loaf of bred under the arm and actualy use mac computers.

What war? Mac lost the war the day they invented virtual PC and proved they where the weaker machine. Ever seen a PC user ask for a virtual mac for their PC? Ofcourse not! They dont need to because they already run the superior machine. Virtual PC is the mac users forbidden fruit. It's their needlemarks behind the knee. It's their little slice of heaven that they wish they could have.

Sounds like an awesome maichine Evan... I'm duly jealous... and I just upgraded my computer a few months ago too! ;)

...though I have to admit I like the quad-core (mine's only 2.2ghz though).

    Re: new compy

They're all just jealous. Including me. I was actually a bit surprised at the vid card though. You've got super top notch stuff elsewhere and only a 512MB card. I mean, it's still a really really good card, but the rest of the components are really really really good.

And your monitor is bigger than my TV. :(

    Re: new compy

Like I said, it is marketed as a workstation, not a gaming rig. Unless your program is offloading all of the work to the GPU, the card is really just fluff.

    Re: new compy

Yah, I'm not much of a gamer anymore anyway. I haven't touched a video game in nearly 5 months. This computer is for work purposes. I constantly work with Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign files with hundreds to thousands of layers and high-resolution images. It's important for me to see the entire piece at full size, plus all the palette windows for tools. So I need processor power, storage and screen space. This brings me up to 2.5 TB across 5 drives.

Hundreds of thousands of layers? That makes my RAM cry.

    Re: new compy

    Congrats, upgrades are awesome.

Been thinking about upgrading my RAM myself, but it'll be tricky to get my hands on DDR-1 RAM now.

I read the specs and if it didn't have the word "Mac" in there I wouldn't have realized that it isn't.

    What, a Mac? Really?

    Ouch. Graphic designer?

Hundreds to thousands. :) I can't imagine what one could do that would require hundreds of thousands...that'd be insane.

    Yep, and web developer.
