New class - the leech

New class - the leech

Far away from the tundra and the stinking bog of the barbarian and the witch doctor respectively, you will find the fourth class of D3 in his/her study. It has been 20 years since the destruction of the Worldstone, and a new seat of learning has sprung up in the trading city of Caldeum.

A shift in the philosophical wind has taken place, and while in the world of Sanctuary it is not possible to disbelieve in angels and demons, there has been a drive away from mysticism and reliance upon external forces and toward knowledge and empiricism.

At the University in Caldeum*, a faculty of anatomists, physiologists, pharmacists, etc have banded together to fight disease... and demons! These physickers, or "Leeches" in the popular parlance, will dispense remedies... and justice!

Like the necromancer, the Leech has a some-would-say unhealthy preoccupation with cadavers, but this is not done to enlist the undead into a ghoulish army, but for the purpose of study and the advancement of knowledge. He/she is also a master of potions and of anatomical knowledge...

... let's have a look at the skill trees.

1. Anatomist skill tree
"Go for the jugular" - an attack to an opponent's weak point - deals x (high) damage.
"Blood letting" - damage over time effect that causes x damage over y seconds
"Scalpel mastery" - increased damage and critical strike chance with knives
"Transfusion" - damage done to target increases player's health in return
"Surgeon's markings" - take out your marker and point out the demon's weak points - party members will do increased damage to this target
"Fear of the coroner" - aura knocks back undead

2. Healer skill tree
"Bandage" -
"Physician's touch" - cast on party member to heal them for x health over y seconds
"Prophylaxis" - cast on party member to reduce damage taken by x for y seconds
"Physician heal thyself" - instantly heals the leech to full health at expense of all remaining mana
"Swift recovery" - aura that heals party members by x health per second
"Post mortem" - cast on corpse for a chance to find a magical item
"Scared of the doctor" - cast on enemy to make them run in fear

3. Apothecary skill tree
"Health potion" - brew up a health potion
"Mana potion" - brew up a mana potion
"Bitter lemon drink" - brew up a potion that is so bitter and lemony that it increases a barbarian's fury
"Poison blade" - brew up a poison and apply it to a party member's weapon to apply a damage-over-time poison effect
"Anaesthetic" - brew up an anaesthetic to stun an enemy for x seconds
"Festering wounds" - brew up a potion to reduce monster heal by x (could stack up to 100% with higher ranks?)
"Poison resistance potion" - brew up a potion that reduces the effects of poison
"MRSA" - even an enemy that is resistant to poison suffers a poison effect over time

Thoughts?! :coffee:

* NOT abbreviated to CalTech, please!

I like the idea. However, two of the tree trees are slow paced. A full tree to healing isn't something for diablo. Diablo needs lots of dps. Same goes for the apothecary skill tree. It's slow paced and doesn't fit diablo.

You don't just want to brew something or heal someone, you want to brutally murder monsters. If you could get that into the class at the expense of skills paced skills, it may turn out a very good idea.

You are right of course...

... hmmm, how about adding "Defibrillation" into the healing tree?

x% chance to revive a corpse to fight for you for y seconds (possible total "revives" z).

It all seems slightly familiar...!

Like NASE said, the two skill trees are too slow paced. Even the one that isn't still has many support spells, but the aim is that every character can complete D3 on his or her own, while still having some support spells. So like, no potions for strictly barb fury.

And I don't know... to me there just isn't anything thrilling about the idea :/

cast on party members? ......in Diable game?

I still remember the 'holy bolt' skill of pally, most underused skill of the entire game...

Blizzard has already stated every character will be DPS. There won't be any support-type classes. This idea is the very antithesis of what is being planned for the game.

Well this, ""Scared of the doctor" - cast on enemy to make them run in fear", almost made me crap my pants

Essentially it's just the old Necromancer "Terror", but I really like the new name ^^

What?! Not even scalpel mastery?! Pfft, you guys are hard to excite! :)

I'm not sure I see a problem with skills castable on party members... after all the D2 paladin has two trees full of auras that affect everyone in party, not just him. Likewise, the sorceress's Enchant skill.

But, it is fair to say that it is hard to see the potential for a DPS based healer, for example. As you say, every class has to have the potential for several builds capable of raw DPS, demon-killing action.

Perhaps saying this idea is the "antithesis" of this approach is putting it a bit strongly, however; there is presumably a way of making healing-style skills complement a DPS approach to gameplay. (Perhaps along the lines of stealing life?) I think this would appeal to a subset of players.*

I'm not sure I've hit this nail on the head quite here, but I do think it can be done...

Thanks for your comments.

PS Dawnmaster - glad you liked it... maybe we could have a whole tree based around terror... perhaps a "Dentistry" skill tree...

"Fear of the drill" - a buzzing sound fills nearby monsters' ears, causing them to run screaming for their mums

*Curiously enough, probably not me though!

For me great  special first one (Scalpel mastery and Fear of the coroner are the best ). Third is a bit missed since there will be no heal potion but generaly a like the idea. But generaly real fresh idea

i like the last tree and the idea of an apothecary/alchemist, but a surgeon class is, er, something else. it doesn't vibe with the rest of the game if you ask me.

Lol I would rather see a healer under the name me and my pals though up, The Zakarum Priest, but your suggestion is quite interesting, but the fact that this class goes for the whole science thing, I just dont feel it fits with the world.

"Bitter lemon drink" - brew up a potion that is so bitter and lemony that it increases a barbarian's fury
Nothing makes Barbarians wrathful like some lemony potion. It's not like Bruce Campbell's lemon water in My Name Is Bruce, is it?

(This isn't mean-spirited. I so, so wish there would be a Necromancer-esque class in D3. I have just given up all hope.)
