Nephalem Rifts are completely randomized, and feature interior and exterior content from Acts I - V. These tile sets will be in a totally random order, support random atmospheric effects (like lighting and weather), and have up to 10 levels, but all of those details are random too. Of course, there will also be random monsters and a boss to cap it all off.


Let's talk a little bit about rewards for completing a Nephalem Rift, since it was recently adjusted in the beta. Currently, Nephalem Rifts are also rewarding players with a Greater Horadric Cache when completed, which is a nice addition to whatever loot drops off of the random boss.

I'll muster some of my knowledge of the game and think of rewards that can work in diablo 3. Very rare reward is a reward even more difficult to get than a leg. Rare reward is half of very rare, yet as much as a leg. These items will drop from a Rift Boss, and will be in a item cache. (Items with charges are stored in your inventory, like pots)

*(As well i'm putting more 'Rare Rewards' on the table, since these rewards are at the same percent of a leg dropping, and players would make it a goal to get these and have a funner time with new content.)


-Ability to mix gems. Choose certain stats on gems and mix for a fee. Gems will last forever. You mix gems with a magical Stone Cutter. You can only mix 2 gems each time you get the cutter. Mixed gems are BoA, can sell for double price of de-socket price. Stone Cutter will drop from Rift boss. (Very rare reward)


-Ability to create your own shrine effect. This reward allows you to pick a shrine via a menu and sacrificially mix stats of other shrines. Like movement speed and frenzy. Although to have both you must choose one more than the other. Were as, Movement Speed is cut in half (like at 50% capability). For more damage from Frenzy, etc. They'd last for 1 full week. The item allowing you to mix shrines is a golden halo statue. It drops from rift boss. (No insta-kill shrine allowed) (Very rare reward) (Cannot get shrines on maps)


-Ability to choose any area of the map and create limited boss battles. Can spawn 2 bosses. Were as for a true test you can fight Diablo and the Butcher at once, other have Diablo and Izual together. (no Belial, and no Azmodan). Boss's will last until you kill them, you can log off, and they'd still wait in that same area, even with random map layout. You get 100% chance for 2 legs for your specific class, 1 resp chest. A boat load of gold and exp. (Very rare reward) (Ability given as a skill point located on map. Which displays as, "You've received a very rare Reward, you can place X onto Y. This lasts forever until used") (Like bounties in a sense)


-Add a super-goblin. With the best Gems, yet double the HP and ... Run Speed. Lasts twice as long than normal goblins. (Rare reward) (Spawn within rift area after boss is slain)


-Allow players to receive the Beastiary portal scroll. To open Specific portals to certain realms to fight; per se only Demons of the demon class. Or Beast enemies like goats or such in one area from all acts, etc. Scaled of difficulty. Portals will last until fully cleared. 1 portal spawned per scroll. No item drops. Because of paragon scaling to infinity; gives massive amount of exp. Scroll drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward) *(Similar to Neph Rift. Yet in the streams I see what looks like a full un-dead rift to still have demons in it. All enemies of un-dead class only in one dense portal, 'like' rift, etc.)*


-Ability which allows players to spawn slain enemies. Max to spawn is 4. Enemy hp and damage cut in half, scaled to difficulty. Certain enemies will have a fee to reincarnate as well. Like a phase beast since they can tele-port, etc. The item to re-spawn slain enemies resembles a Totem, it has 30 charges. 1 charge can spawn the 4 enemies via choosing. They last until slain. Log off won't make them vanish. Down side, you gain less gold and gems per drop. Totem drops from rift boss. (Very Rare Reward) (Cannot stack with Ghoul Stone, but, you can summon 2 and 2.)


-Ability to shrink items to 1 slot space. The items which can do this are called shrink orbs and have 50 charges. Drop from rift boss. (Rare reward) (Although items only take up 2 slots, imagine everything in only 1 slot space! A space saver!)



-Ability to let other players gamble on your items. This is a small parchment of trade rules, which allows this gamble game. It is similar to a trading menu. The other player views the items the player posts. Their item is unidentified even if they identified it. If taken off of gamble space their item will revert back to their normal identified, and or re-rolled item. The buyer or gambler must buy that item at blizzard's pricing of the item. Price is also affected by re-rolling stats on item at mystic, and whatever the existing stats are. The item will roll slightly more random than usual, and will have the stats which were re-rolled on the item, but at a slight difference. After buying the item from another player; the item can be trade-able and is not BoA. Parchment drops from rift boss. You're like Gheed. (Leg items that aren't BoA can be freely traded like rares, but people can only gamble and buy the items from a certain player for 1 week. (Very Rare Reward) (This ability will last for 1 week, after use)


-Acquire a bag stash. Resemblance of a big bag. Lasts for 1 week. Requires medium inventory space (4 slots, bag has 15 slot spaces). Can only have 1 at a time. Drop from rift boss. (Rare Reward)


-Allow all followers to join you and your adventuring. A warning message parchment drops and alerts you and your followers that certain enemies are out to get them. They all join you for the cause. Follower abilities are at half strength. Drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward) (Last for 1 day)

-Ability to copy party mates! To do so you must acquire the illusion stone. This stone creates 1 carbon copy of your party member or friend. The copied member is like a mirror image. It is erased via log off and stays until killed. The stone has 5 charges. It drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward)


-Ability to mix potions. A potion mixer device is dropped and allows potion mixing. (That is, for whatever other potions are put into the game). Potions can also be modified, like to have no cool down, etc, for a fee. Drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward)


-Ability to mix events. A designer tome drops and allows the player to mix events. Like the Jar of Souls event and the Forlorn Farm event. Were-as the farm is haunted by the skeleton Jar of Souls. Skeletons and Bats spawn, until the time runs out. The Executioner (skeleton you fight while saving Cain at the very beg) spawns from the orb along with SickleFang once the time hits zero. Giving loads of exp and gold. Tome drops from rift boss. (Very Rare Reward)


-Parallel universe dungeon. You receive a reverse universe scroll. This scroll opens a portal to a dungeon like the one which you fight the Butcher in. Instead, you fight yourself and your party members for a certain amount of time (2-5 min?). Which are like Diablo's shadow clone, but even tougher, and spawn in pair of 2 and keep re-spawning after they die. Once you survive, you gain exp equaled to every boss battle. Scroll drops from Rift Boss. (Rare Reward)


-Ability to make one character look like another! A mirror stone drops, and gives the ability to make your wizard look like a monk! With same animations of course. Your form and looks is like a shadow clone from Diablo, only light blue in color. Stone drops from Rift boss. (Rare Reward)


-Ability to have up to three companions from any class. A dominance stone drops. This stone allows you the ability to choose any companion from every class. From DH boar, WD Zombie Dogs, to Wizard Familiar. This stone has 3 charges, 1 charge allows you to choose any companion equaling to 3. Cannot use 2 stones at once (as in, you have 2, and used a charge on the other, you can't use the other stone to summon 3 more, must use other stone fully first!). Companion's last for 1 full day. Stone drops from rift boss. (Very Rare Reward)

-Able to go into hell. Well, not exactly, but to be sucked into hell moreof. After completing a rift, there is a small chance that after the rift boss is killed. A crack in the dimension appears on the floor, and sucks you in to the depths of hell. You must fight down a long stretch, longer than Rakkis Crossing. With loads of elite packs and dense white mobs. At the end you fight a gate keeper of hell, and once you defeat him, you get a chance to get lots of white items. Loads of exp as well. And then a portal opens to beam you to your last area. (Rare Reward) (Density is high, will be pre-set, cannot increase with more player or mp)


-A reward which allows players to invite soldiers of bastion keep or heaven. To fight along side players in multiplayer or single. You find a warning parchment written by Tyrael. Which the rift boss had stolen to weaken your strategic efforts against the lords of hell in sanctuary. Saying that the forces of either bastion keep or heaven are at your side. You can bring 6 warriors along with you. 3 of each or 6 from one area. These warriors can be summoned only 10 times. They last for 2 day time period. Parchment drops from rift boss. (Very Rare Reward) (If a warrior is killed, he re-spawns at town. They deal 3/4's of your damage and have half of your HP, and have half your max Resist) (After the 2 day time period, you can summon warriors again to help you)


-Receiving the Imperceptible Pendant. This pendant allows players to momentarily go invisible for 5 seconds during Rift Boss battles only. Has a 35 second Cool Down. Lasts forever. Cannot use skill during the 5 seconds. Drops from rift boss. (Very Rare Reward) (Once 1 drops, no more will drop)


-Receiving the Ghoul Stone. This Stone can spawn zombies from slain enemies. So as long as you're in range. Range is 20 yards. This stone has 30 charges. 1 charge can summon 4 zombies, equivalent to half of an enemy's HP and damage. Stone drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward) (You cannot spawn more zombies until the current 4 are all dead)


-Receiving the Deception Stone. This stone can control 1 Elite of an elite pack for 7 seconds, to help you fight the demon hoard! Drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward) (Has a 230 second cool down)


-Receiving the Black Box. This mysterious black box can immobilize and cause invulnerability on a elite pack for 10 seconds, they cannot attack either. This item has 20 charges. Drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward) (Can only use on 1 elite pack at a time, per charge)


-Receiving the Unicorn Crystal. This crystal can summon 3 unicorns to your aid. This crystal has 15 charges. Unicorns deal 3/4 of your damage, and have 1/2 of your HP. Unicorns last until death. Drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward) (Cannot summon more than 3 unicorns at a time, must wait until currently spawned unicorns are dead to use Crystal again)

-Receiving the Bovine skull. This skull is a mystery piece.
-Receiving the Harlot finger. This finger is a mystery piece.
-Receiving the Quartz Crystal. This crystal is a universal mystery piece.


(Yes Harlot means prostitute, and prostitute means Corrupter, so, the Corrupted finger!)


-Receiving these 3 items allows them to be fused at the Jeweler to create the Harlot Crystal Skull. This crystal skull allows you to travel to a land similar of the mystical unicorn land, yet to fight Ghost cows instead. Granting only massive amounts of exp, no item reward. You can gain the cow king crown, if you can find the Ghost Cow King! Drops from rift boss. (Very Rare Reward's)


-Receiving the Banner of Hero's flag. This small flag waves proudly upon your right or left shoulder. For re-discovering its existence from killing so many rift bosses! Grants a snazzy cosmetic effect for finding it, no other use. Drops from rift boss. (Very Rare Reward)


-Creating the Player Vs Enemy Vs Player arena! A special warning scroll states that your party members want to challenge you to the death! (And the demons have realized this sub-conscious hatred upon one another)<(Relation to scroll) Once activated, this scroll opens a portal to Azmodan's Lair, and only those who've also received and used this scroll can go here. The hero's are allied in spirit, but not of friendship! They must battle endless waves of enemies like the Jar of Souls event. Once a hero is killed it re-spawns after 6 seconds. Whoever has the most kills is the winner, and is granted with 5 Nephalem Rift Stones and 5 points to use for paragon stats! (Somewhat a competition) The scroll drops from rift boss. (Very Rare Reward)


-The Race Event! Players receive a special parchment stating that a bounty is on their head if they enter the Keep Depths Level 2. (This is activated if 2 or more have received and used this parchment warning, in private or multi-player games) The players only have the Sprint Skill (& Pots) to use in the keep depths 2 and must escape one Shadow Enemy chasing them. They must race through the Depths 2 to the Keep Depths 3, and finally to Ghom's Lair. Whoever reaches to Ghoms lair first is the winner! Their reward is 2 Resp Chests. Parchment drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward)


-Receiving the Canine necklace. This necklace allows any hero to spawn a ferocious wolf to come to their aid. This wolf growls at enemies, causing them to be feared for 6 seconds. This necklace has 10 charges. Item drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward)


-Receiving the Stone Tablet. This tablet allows you to summon 5 ancient mummies to fight in act 2. This tablet has 15 charges. Drops from rift boss. (Very Rare Reward) (Must wait until current 5 mummies are dead, to use another charge)


-Receiving the Horadric Quartz Crystal. This crystal enhances enemy density and resistances by a small margin within the chosen rift of the chosen difficulty scale. Also has a chance to summon Horadrum Ghosts to fight by your side while in a Nephalem Rift (only) for 15 seconds, upon receiving a fatal blow. Has 10 charges, so can be used on 10 rifts. Crystal drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward)

-Receiving the Dragon Scroll. This scroll allows the Demon Hunter to summon a shadow dragon to come to his aid for 8 seconds. (Dealing damage based on 3/4 of your HP). After receiving a fatal blow. This scroll has 15 charges, using 1 charge allows the dragon to keep coming to aid the DH; until log off. On log in, you must use the scroll again to have the dragon come to your aid. Scroll drops from Rift Boss. (Very Rare Reward)


-Receiving the Lizard Eye. This eye allows the Barbarian to tame and summon a Fallen Hound and have it come to his aid for 8 seconds. (Dealing damage based on 3/4 of your HP.) After receiving a fatal blow. This eye has 15 charges, using 1 charge allows the Hound to keep coming to aid the Barb; until log off. On log in, you must use the eye again to have the Hound come to your aid. Eye drops from Rift Boss. (Very Rare Reward)


-Receiving the Canine Spine. This spine allows the Witch Doctor to summon 3 feral zombie wolves to growl and cause enemies to flee for 5 seconds. This spine has 15 charges. You can keep using the charges until they're wasted. Spine drops from Rift Boss. (Very Rare Reward)


-Receiving the Holy Scroll. This scroll allows the Crusader and Monk to summon a Angel blockade in front of their body. The angels hold back enemies for 4 seconds, causing no damage. This scroll has 15 charges. Scrolls can be used until they're wasted. Scroll drops from Rift Boss. (Very Rare Reward)


-Receiving the Prophet's Orb. This orb allows the Wizard to summon 4 arcane beings to force push enemies back 25 yards, dealing no damage and are summoned once the Wizard receives a fatal blow. This orb has 15 charges. You must use another charge after the 4 arcane beings have used their force push. Orb drops from rift boss. (Very Rare Reward)

-Receiving the Cracked Mystery Gem. Present this cracked gem to Covetous Shen. Shen will use his abilities to enhance existing stat points for all stats by 4 points. Gem drops from Rift Boss. (Very Rare Reward) (Can be found and used 15 times)

-Ability to mix rare rings. Gold scraps (not currency) drop from rift bosses. Use this gold to mix 2 rare rings and formulate the existing stats. Final Ring is BoA and can be sold at vendor for mixed sell price of both mixed rings. Can be GAMBLED! Pricing for this type of item is by blizzard. (1 ring is 2246, another is 2657, both sell prices mix equaling 4903, more than what you can sell items for) Gold scraps drop from rift boss. (Cannot enchant ring at Mystic) (Idea goes like this. 1 ring has 9% IAS, 5% Life, 300 Stre. Another, 5% CC, 36% CD, 67 AR, 150 Dex) (The 2 rings, placed in 2 upper boxes, forming the one ring on the lower box on tab at Jewler. The one ring will be randomly formed based on only those stats and can have 9% IAS, 5% Life, 5% CC, 67 AR, etc.) (3 gold scrap must be used with 2 rings to form 1 ring and can be re-rolled for a fee, until you have desired mixed stats of both rings on the one final ring) (Rare Reward) *(Experimental)

(Crusader Themed)

-Receiving the Holy Key- This key force pushes all area of space to stun all enemies for 4 seconds (dealing no damage) Once below 10% life. Disables defensive skills and increases movement speed by 35%; for the 4 seconds. Has 20 charges. Charges can be used until wasted. Key drops from Rift Boss. (Very Rare Reward)

-Receiving the Templar Tome- This tome can summon the Templar to strike all enemies with one blow, upon your death. Tome has 15 charges. Dealing 1/4 of your max damage. Charges can be used until wasted. Tome drops from Rift Boss. (Very Rare Reward)

-Receiving the Holy Bell- This bell can fear Elites (only) for 3 seconds, once you are below 35% of your maximum life. Bell drops from Rift Boss. (Very Rare Reward)

-Creating the Gold Catcher event. This event is based on how much gold a player can get in 3 minutes. A Golden scroll drops from the rift boss. This scroll creates a portal. Allowing all players to travel to the Vault of the Assassin in act 2. Gold lay scattered everywhere, the more players there are, the more gold piles upon piles there are. Players must collect all gold within 3 minutes, using any speed boosting skill, or mantra. Once and if all gold is collected, all players receive bonus gold for completion and the max collected gold is given to all players. If players do not collect all gold, they leave the VOTA, and receive only 25% of gold collected between all players. No bonus. Scroll is dropped by Rift Boss. (Rare Reward)


-Creating the Anguish Uber Event. This event is based on only playing on Torment 5 or 6. (but by release, I don't know how the difficulty will be) You face 4 Uber bosses at once. A Torment scroll drops from the Rift Boss. This scroll opens a portal for all players to travel to the Crystal Arch. You face any of the Uber bosses from random picking, on the Arch. This event gives lots of whites, gold, exp, and 1 legendary crafting tome. Scroll drops from Rift Boss. (Very Rare Reward)


-Creating the Zombie Infestation event. This event is based on Full spectrum zombie density hoards at Old Tristram. Only zombies and Spewing Horrors are in Old Tristram. A dusty scroll drops from the rift boss. This scroll opens a portal, allowing all players to travel to Old Tristram to erase the zombie infestation. Giving normal drops, and a lot of exp. (Very Rare Reward)

====== 12/18/13

-Adding Unique Monsters in rifts. A purple crystal drops, you use this crystal to add 2 unique monsters (Like a bounty boss) of a random draw to fight with the rift boss. It has 10 charges, use em on 10 rifts. Each has random affixes based on any elite affix that was used in the last rift. Drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward)


-Creating the Hazard Event. A parchment drops saying tyrael wants you to gather some items of use. This parchment opens a portal to an area with (traps) fire traps and those swinging blade traps all around, falling debris, etc, like in halls of agony. Once you retrieve this item for tyrael, you run back threw the hazard zone to the portal. These items can be used for allowing legendary's to be more potent, for a fee. There are 10 in all, resembling anything from a book, blood, a case, a bottle, or skin. Once enchanted at the mystic, it will make any legendary more potent in DPS and default or re-rolled stats. Via enhancing them and giving the ability to swap one affix from one legendary to another of any item piece. Or greatly enhancing the ability to roll better stats or new stats. As well each item obtained for tyrael and received again can apply different effects and attributes as well. Drops from rift boss. Gathered from a chest after running through the event area. (Rare Reward) (Could work for legacy legs as well, although at half potency) (Cannot have 2 affixes that reduce damage by % on 1 leg item, or similar-like stats, must be different)


-Creating the Fallen maniac event. This event is killing as many fallen maniacs as possible, similar to the cursed chest event. A fallen shin bone drops from the rift boss. Use this bone in the Oasis to begin a timer and have an area of constant spawning fallen maniacs attempt to blow up on you, for 2 minutes. If you survive this event, you are rewarded 2 resp chests and some exp. (Rare Reward)

====== 12/19/13 (More Act themed Events)

A4 -Creating the Angel Brigade Event. A white scroll drops, it is a message stating that the angels need assistance in battling the hoards of hell in heaven. The rift boss stole this scroll from an angel he killed that was crossing dimensions. This scroll opens a portal to heaven of an area similar to the great span, which is the place you fight Izual. You and your party go there and a timer starts, other angels come down to assist the few that are there, more come a few seconds later. Demons and monsters begin to ran-sack the area. You must hold off for 2 minutes against rapidly spawning enemies, with the angels. If you and your party survives you gain 1 resp chest with a chance to contain a legendary, and exp equal to the total monsters you and your members killed. Similar display to the cursed chest event. Scroll drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward) (*You can do these type of events as many time's as the items drop to allow these events to fire*)

A2 -Creating the Sandy Spider event. A fang drops. You use this fang as an attractor in the black canyon mines to summon the hoards of spiders. These spiders have been infesting small villages in the desert, you must kill them to stop the infestation. Spiders constantly spawn and you have 2 minutes to hold off the spider ambush. Once the timer ends, you gain a resp chest with a chance for a legendary, and exp equal to the amount of enemies killed, plus a bonus if a certain amount is slain. Then the spiders will have their infestation ceased! Fang drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward)

(Achievement Themed)

-Ability to allow players to recieve a certain amount of crafting goods / books. This is based of doing certain acheivements and the game rewards players with crafting goods, from exquisite essences up to legendary crafting tomes.

-Ability to allow players to choose certain acheivements to be displayed above flags. Whatever achievement players want to have displayed, they choose it and the achievement is put above their flag as a sign of accomplishment. 3 achievements can be displayed above the flag.

-Receiving the Gold Globe. This globe allows players to periodically release 3 bursts of chain lightning or 3 bursts of homing fire missiles on targets for 1 hour. Doing 3/4 of max damage. Has 3 charges, 1 charge lasts 1 hour and cannot stack, and it randomly chooses one of the 2 attacks. Drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward)

-Receiving the Candle Stick. This candle stick allows players to periodically release 3 bursts of holy blasts onto enemies for 3 seconds within a 9 yard radius, and causes enemies attacks to weaken by 2.5% per blast that hits. Has 3 charges, lasts 1 hour and cannot stack with another charge. Drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward)

-Receiving the Leg Bone. This bone befumbles enemies and causes them to be confused for 1.5 seconds, upon being used. Has 10 charges. Can be used 10 times until wasted. Drops from rift boss. (Rare Reward)

-Ability to let players Rebound control effects. A mirror eye drops. This eye is used if a player is hit by a control effect, and rebounds this effect to an enemy and they suffer the damage done to you and are afflicted by whatever affix was casted upon the player. This mirror must be used each time a new control effect is casted upon you, it has 50 charges. Eye drops from rift boss. (Very Rare Reward) (Basically, this mirror eye will use an elite affix against the caster. if a frost orb explodes on you, and you use the mirror eye, it will use a frost orb on the elite pack (and or hit other mobs around) and will be the color green)

====== 1/25/14 (happy new year)

-Ability to have certain Legendary's Proc Skills. A rainbow stone drops from the Rift Boss. This stone has 5 charges and can only be used for legendary weapons. This stone allows only 1 skill to be chosen from the character skill pool and have it automatically cast. You choose earthquake, as well the color from the stone applied to the weapon (via changing color of text) is the color which corresponds to the damage type the skill does. IE) Once using the stone your item gets green text. Then you choose a skill and you choose earthquake & can now do poison damage and the skill will have a slight chance to proc after choosing it for your weapon. Or you leap (without CD) and cause a fog of poison to whoosh by enemies, being the poison damage. Or you get fire damage, earthquake will then do an extra layer of fire damage along with base fire damage. (Very Rare Reward)

-Ability to Let players Duel Elites. A dueling scroll drops from the rift boss. The player has the ability to create a ring (or cause immunity to their character for 2 seconds). Around 1 elite and can only face that elite until it is dead in a 25 yard radius. The ring cannot allow other elites or their affix's threw. Once you beat that one elite, you get extra exp times 2 of however much that monster has. This scroll has 20 charges. You left click to use on one elite, or cause immunity for 2 seconds with a 120 second CD via right clicking the scroll. (Rare Reward)

-Ability to allow players to Disable 1 Elite Affix. A mysterious dis-abler scroll drops from the rift boss. This scroll allows the player to disable the first assigned affix that 1 elite has, for 15 seconds. The player simply right clicks on the scroll and it activates upon the nearest elite and disables its 1st affix. This scroll has 20 charges and a 30 second cool down. (Rare Reward)
