    Need computer internet connection tech help

    I live in a condominium on the bottom floor of 3 stories.
    I used to use my 3 year old laptop with Verizon dsl modem to go online.

    I recently purchased a new comp with a Netgear router so I can go online with my new comp. However, sometimes my connection is so slow, I can't surf online, and sometimes I can't even connect.

    I know it isn't the router problem. Could it be interference from other, weaker connections? Or could it be the verizon company has problems on their end?

    My router is a secure network.

    Thanks!

    if are you using wireless, try using a cable to help troubleshoot

    if its still laggy/slow try tracert to find where the slowdown is coming from
    google.com or yahoo.com are good targets

    I'm not using cable.

    I don't understand tracert; do you mean go to google and type in tracert?

    By cable, ffejrxx was referring to using an ethernet cable to connect your computer to the router (rather than relying on the wireless link) - not to a cable modem/ISP. You'd want to do this while troubleshooting so you can eliminate one variable (the wireless connection) as a possible source of slowdown.

    tracert (trace route) is a command-line utility to used determine latency between nodes (hops) from one host (your computer) to another (the server). To run it, open a command prompt (Winkey+R to open the Run box, type cmd [command for Win98/ME and earlier], hit Enter). At the prompt, type:

    tracert domainname

    where domainname is an internet domain like google.com or yahoo.com. For example,
    tracert google.com [Enter]

    I won't get into the technical details, but it returns the time in milliseconds that sets of packets take to be passed from one node to the next. You are looking for particularly high values - or a timeout - at a particular node.

    sorry for not being specific enough

    Holysinner is correct
    winkey+r -> cmd [enter] -> tracert google.com [enter]
    will return results similar too

    Code:
    C:\>tracert google.com

    Tracing route to google.com [64.233.187.99]
    over a maximum of 30 hops:

      a      b        c        d      e                                [f]

    Trace complete.

    where
    a= hop #
    b-d= ping to that ip
    e= domain name
    f= domain ip

    where the big pings or '-' [timeout] start is where the problem exists (if its before your router or modem then its a lan problem, beyond your isp its a problem somewhere else)

    That's really neat. What does the "jc-in-f99" mean?
