My skellies don't survive

I'm a lvl 71 fishy and my skellies don't survive in act 1 like I keep reading they should. 20/20 RS and SM. No real plus skills at the moment. (just started up after 3 years) I was still under the assumption that these guys would stand up in hell. I figure it's a game play/strategy issue on my part and I'm just wondering how to properly curse, ce, and otherwise help these guys stay alive. Merc has weak gear, i he really the big problem?

hmm. i'd pick up a cheap +2 necro or +3 summon skills amulet, and maybe make yourself a cheap Spirit shield if you don't have the ability to buy Homunculus. get a decent summoning wand (again, you can get these cheap) and you should have a good +8 to skills there. that should help somewhat.

re: Merc - do you have a Act 2 NM Might (offensive) merc? you can get him outfitted fairly cheaply with:

- Smoke runeword (Nef + Lum) armor
- Obedience (Hel + Ko + Thul + Eth + Fal) 5soc polearm
- Guillaume's Face (Orphan's Call set) helm

that will provide your merc with lots of crushing blow and resists on the cheap (ie: quickly).

as far as gameplay goes, cast Amp on a group of enemies, once the first one falls, start spamming Corpse Explosion til everything is dead. repeat ad infinitum :)

Welcome Newcomer to The Darkness. Grab a brew and feel free to raise some corpses.

If you are concerned that your play style might be a problem it would help us if you post how a normal run for you goes.

Thank you for the suggestion bruticus. I'll be sure to put this into action.

I'm on East so thank you for the offer DT but it won't help at the moment.

As for my game play...I find my forces getting split between multiple clusters of enemies. This makes crowd control curses tough (attract goes away too quickly) and my attention needs to be split between the enemies. At this point it seems that I'm starting to see my guys dwindle and everything becomes tougher. Should I be walking slowly through each level, having larger curse radius? Not sure what my problem is.

Really, the biggest thing you can do to help your cause is find +skills anywhere you can, as the others have said so far. If you can run NM Meph/Baal, do so, as this is your best chance to find +skill items. Also, places like NM Council are nice for getting flawless gems, and then you can trade off pgems for worthwhile equipment.

Uniques to look for would be Arm of King Leoric (+5 RS/SM!), Homunculus, Skins of the Vipermagi, Lidless Wall, etc. I may be wrong but I believe those can all be found in Nightmare (perhaps all NM Meph, even), and even better items than those can be found as well. In addtion to what Bruticus suggested, a very cheap Lore (Ort+Sol) helm can help a bit, too.

Once you get a few +skills items (~28-30 RS/SM as Bruticus said), you should be able to run Hell Pits fairly effectively. From there you should be able to accumulate enough wealth to eventually pick up Shako, a low Necro Torch, etc.

In regard to keeping your minions organized, by far the best way to do that in my opinion is to have an Enigma (Jah+Ith+Ber) armor for the +1 to teleport mod, as it brings all your minions directly to where you teleport. Once your army is summoned, amp a crowd and teleport on top of an enemy. Your minions will usually kill this enemy almost immediately (a type of gang-bang telestomp, if you will), at which point CE takes care of the rest. Of course, this is a rather expensive item and will take a while for you to be able to afford, but in my opinion it should definitely be a target piece of equipment. For me it is by far the most useful item on my summoner.

I'm a bit short on items right now (US East Ladder), but feel free to add my account, kanadah4, to your friends list, and I'll show you my equipment and help you out when I find some more useful Necro items.

Just don't get discouraged on your summoner, they're fun and extremely powerful with a few +skills .

That shouldn't happen. You should not be fighting multiple groups at once when you have little +skills. Do you have corpse explosion, btw? My skeles when untwinked can last through killing a few enemies, but not through a few packs. But I never have to last through a few packs as CE can kill them all at once.

In my Fishy's early days, I used a Strength runeword Thresher (AmnTir) on his merc - This offers some LL and Crushing Blow, and is very cheap if you come across a suitable weapon (you can make this in a spear too if necessary). I'm on East Ladder and I'd give it to you, but I'm afraid I tossed it while cleaning up mules =\ In any case look me up @ *painman sometime as I have a few things I can give you to help power up.

I have an 83 fishy and whenever my skels were split between groups, I'd run away and then go back slowly. Skels and merc would follow me and then the mobs would funnel into one big group when they came after me and now you're facing one big group instead of a bunch of small ones. Then they're all bunched up for AMP + CE.

Also, opening a TP and going in then back out works as kind of like a makeshift teleport.

With no source of teleport you walk everywhere. Running means you are pulling too many monsters.

Get NM Act 2 offensive merc, give him pride (or infinity), get yourself beast and then get yourself as much +skill as possible.

CtA for your army if you want - but it's not needed.

I curbstomp just about anything with just my skeletons - I'll get some revives if I want to do ubers or what not.

I forgot to add - amp everything - and in regards to your actual question of survivability - +skills (mainly), oak from hoto/wisp and cta will make then tougher than nails.
