My PK experience

Hey all,

I thought I'd post this here, because I mainly play paladins, and I was a paladin when I met my first PK'er (today). I've been playing bnet for about a year now, and I used to be surprised by the amount of people who said they were pk'd by people higher than them, as this has usually never happened to me. Infact, I had never seen someone go hostile with me, until today. My faith in the average level of maturity on bnet was never really high, and after today, I think it sunk a few more feet...

First, abit of history. A friend of mine wanted to start over as a melee sorc (on ladder)(kingslayer weapon and enchant), and because the build is relatively slow early game, he wanted to know if I could help him past normal difficulty, after which he would trek out on his own on nightmare and up to see how well his build handles. I didn't want to just use one of my high chars to rush him up, so I thought I'd start over with him, but I wanted a build that would only been required to dominate normal difficulty, and I eventually choose the holy fire paladin, I also outfitted myself to I had max resistances by lvl 6, to speed the process up for my friend.

Things went fine, and when we hit level 12... I don't know, I must have looked at someone the wrong way, because I was hostiled by a lvl 17 Assassin. With my setup (Deaths hand, sash, greyform, 2 angelic rings, khalms flail, hsarsu boots) I thought it'd be interesting for this assassin to try and kill me, so I told him I was in tristram (was getting cain at that point) and to come and get me if he wants. I don't remember what he said, but he didn't come, so I shrugged and went back to clearing tristram with my friend. We couldn't take the portal out of tristram (because someone hostiled me while I was in it) so we had to TP back to town, where the assassin told me to go out to blood moor for a duel. I didn't really expect to win (never really dueled before) and he had 5 more levels of stat points and skill points than me. Anyway, he was a trapper who dropped some wake of fire traps while running around abit. I just walked through those (max fire resist) and started attacking him in melee, after about 5 hits, the assassin was halfway hp and I was barely touched. He would run around abit, using potions while I chased then he would close to melee again where the exact same thing happened again. This happened about 3 times before he went back to town. I asked why'd he leave and he said I was a cheater. When I asked why, he said because he couldn't do any damage to me. After telling him my equipment, it seems I'm not a cheater now....rather, I'm a no life little kid with nothing better to do (this coming from a person wanting to duel someone 5 lvls lower than him). I didn't even try to continue the conversation, I just left the game with my friend to try and find one with more players (that one was getting abit low on player count anyway).

The second time someone hostiled me was in the next game when I was level 14. This guy was a level 14 sorc. I though this would be interesting, same levels, might be fun and I went to rogue camp to duel her. Again, I must have said something wrong because a lvl 27 paladin hostiled me then too (turned out to be a friend of the sorc). As we were walking outside, the sorc declines my duel because she knows I'm full resistances (hack..?). Anyway, the paladin stills wants to duel me, and I'm a little skeptic....I mean, this guy is twice my level. I eventually thought "what the hell" and went outside to fight him. He starts spamming hammers (I though "joy...a hammerdin") and I just stay outside his hammer field for abit, because I know hammers don't come cheap early game. I remember a friend of mine, who duels pretty much every day, was bragging to me about how he beat a hammerdin by standing on the lower left corner of him so the hammers wouldn't hit. I thought I'd try that here. I stayed below him and let him spam the hammers until I saw an opportunity to run in and start hacking away from the lower left (by lvl 14, I was doing around 130 damage with holy fire). I only got in 3 hits before he changed position and I pulled out, taking no damage. When I hovered over him, I saw he was back up to full hp (another potion user). I did this again, but this time I instead trying to stay on his lower left continually, even if he moved. This worked out pretty good and I was able to get his hp down to just below half, because he managed to get south of me and I thought I was pushing my luck and sprinted out again. I just stayed outside his hammer range for about another 10 seconds before he ran to town.
When I asked why'd he leave, he said I was a newb, because I just keep running around..... I just sat there, in my chair, dumbfounded that he even said that. This guy, who was twice my level, twice as much stat points and twice as much skill points wanted me to sit still so his hammers can just kill me in 3-4 hits. At first, I thought he wasn't serious, and that he must be joking, but with the amount of profanities he spammed and eventually calling in his level 60 friend (which I never even tried to duel) must have meant he was serious. To be honest, I'm a little disappointed with the display of attitude I met with my first two duels, and I sure as hell do not plan on doing anymore. I mean, it's not really worth the effort. You can't win with these people. If I lose to them, I'm a newb and if I win, I'm a chicken/no life/cheater.

*sigh*. Anyway, I just felt like I needed to get that off my chest. I don't mean to whinge or complain about anything (I'm sure legit duels are more friendly) but it just doesn't seem worth the effort.

Peace
