Well, the major problem with Baal's is for a Meteorb is Lister and his gang. Minions of Destruction have 50% cold res, so it would make sense to steer away from the normal "get CM up to level 17 with +skills" and go for level 27 instead.

A little bit of math to justify it:

Say, we do a base damage with orb of 100.
Without CM we do 100*(1 - 0.5) = 50
With level 17 CM we do 100*(1 - 0.5 + 1) = 150
With level 27 CM we do 100*(1 - 0.5 + 1.5) = 200

So the damage increase is 100*(200-150)/150 = 33%. We spend 10 skill point towards that damage increase, if we compare that with the ice bolt synergy 10 skill points would only give a 20% increase (actually a little less, but ok). So those seem some well invested points. Baal has a cold res of 50 too, which works out nicely, but I'm not sure if he's faster to kill with FO/FB or Meteor/FB.

If the 33% increase turns out to be enough to deal with wave 5, I'll put the rest towards fire, if not I guess there is no other way than going for ice bolt. If that doesn't work I consider the experiment failed.

Very interesting. Is it fair to say though, that Icebolt will have the added benefit of increasing the FO killing speed more generally with other less-cold resistant mobs throughout the game, whereas getting CM from 17 to 27 is really only useful for Lister/Baal type monsters with 50% cold resist?

That's true. But my problem specifically is with wave 5. Having higher CM also helps a lot against Meph, which is pretty much the basic MF target for my build.

But if you're doing Baal, then you already beat Meph...pick your target, you can't do both.

You can't do glitched Meph, but there's no reason you can't run him/both otherwise.
