My merc makes me want to kill myself IRL.

My merc makes me want to kill myself IRL.

I started running Hell Meph today, and I can kill Meph easily enough, but my merc finds some way to die every time, and it really pisses me off. Either he'll pull the group behind us, the council member to the left, or get to close to meph and basically one shot.
He's wearing an insight which makes it a little easier for me since I don't have to mana pot as much, but I just started running without him because it's way too expensive to keep rezzing him.
I know I'm standing in the wrong spot or something, can anyone show me a screenshot of where I should stand to avoid me wanting to commit suicide?

The merc is going to aggro stuff no matter what, or stand there and eat Meph's ice globes. There is one thing you can try (but you'll have to fight a bit) - work your way up the left side, kill the blood lords and clear out Maffer's room. Then you go aggro Meph, get him onto the stair, then tele back just inside Maffer's room and kill Meph from the doorway (stand right in the doorway). You may have to tele a few times to reposition the Merc so he's fully inside the room and doesn't wander out to get killed by Meph.

This might be bothersome if you just want to kill Meph and leave, but it's no trouble for me since I kill everything on that level every run. The armor rack up the left side is nice to check too.

Cheap and very effective merc setup is Kelpie Snare (Slow), Rockstopper (%DR and res), Shaftstop (%DR). It'd be very nice if your merc is higher level than Mephisto, since he'll have a higher chance to hit Mephy and Mephy lower to hit him. Just chug some mana potions when you need to, you're passing by Ormus anyways when running to WP so you can buy them there.

There's also Moat trick, but I don't find it worth doing. Just let your merc tank for you and you'll be able to bring down Mephisto with Blizzard and few Ice Blasts easily. You should tele in that empty space between the stairs and the path to Act 4 portal.

For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q21eUxks5es

That guy tele'd on the stairs, try not to kill Mephisto there because sometimes Blizzard doesn't hit.

If you don't have the items mentioned above, try to trade for them or run NM Mephisto.

Without a slowing weapon (kelpie) your merc is going to die unless you can kill meph super fast. Even with kelpie/ full resists, my merc still manages to die while tanking Meph (1 in 10 runs maybe). It seems that you're trying to moat with a merc which is not advised as he pulls a lot of aggro. Instead, either give him a kelpie/ duriels/ nice helm and let him tank or just leave him at home.

I find Mercs to be nothing but trouble for Mephisto, I've died more than once due to him killing those exploding stygians in Durance of Hate 2. I tele around, I land close to a bunch, twice in a row and he manage to kill two and boom, me dead before even releasing teleport button.

Down at Mephisto it's painfully hard to keep him alive, that is if he doesn't aggro some council members instead of just dying like a good puppy.

Andariel isn't that rough but I still feel that I spend more time and energy on keeping him alive than I gain from actually bringing him along.

Nihiltak is the same deal, poor guy, just keep on trucking through the green cloud.

Apart from slowing effect i have found it to be better to simply leave my merc at home when i run Mephisto. Rather moattrick Mephisto or teleport a bit around to kill him, than try to keep my merc alive. Takes alot more time.

Its like asking where you need tele in this game?

Same Answer: You don't, but so much more speed in certain areas.

I would say my merc dies just about 1 run in every 10.

I use an 85 holy freeze merc wearing reapers toll, andy visage, and stopshaft. I just give him a potion right when engages the battle and Meph should be dead within 5-10 secs. The only time he dies is when decrep doesn't go on and he basically implodes.

Worse comes to worse, open a portal and run back through it right before your merc dies. Go talk to Ormus then finish the fight. Might be a little annoying but trying to do the moat trick with a merc is pretty much worthless.

Yup, agreed. I never do Meph runs with my Merc. Poor fella just dies in a few secs. Prob he doesn't have uber gear on him (currently he uses shaft, crown of thieves, insight or kelpie's snare). But its much faster to down Meph with my Blizz Sorc using the moat trick.

and you need tele to relocate your merc.

By the way, easiest for keeping your merc alive during meph runs is to use life tap charges (I carry a wand on weapon switch)

Well maybe yes if you even have merc.

Life tap seems nice.
