My Goal For '09

My Goal For '09

I usually don't do any New Year's Resolutions or make any goals for a year, but I decided to try it this year. My goal is to compete in this. I havn't heard of it before, it must be new or something, but I found it on the NC Department of Transportation website so it seems to be legit.

I know most of you are too lazy to click on links, so I shall explain. It is a bike race, spread over the course of a weekend. There are 4 events:

1) A criterium, basically a circuit race, that is to be held at night. I'm really hoping that everybody can stay upright, I hate roadrash.

2) A time trial the following morning. I'll have to work on this, and hopefully get some TT bars for my bike.

3) It says the third event is "street sprints", which confuses me. Are they 200m sprints like in track racing, or...?

4) A road race on Sunday afternoon.

I havn't been able to ride much lately due to the cold, but as soon as it gets above freezing I'm gonna try and get out to do laps around the lake, and then hopefully by the beginning of spring be doing longer rides around town. The good news is that I will be in the Junior category when it comes to the TT, and there will probably be some sort of best-in-age-group in the road race, so I don't have to be as good as the guys twice my age. Of course, it doesn't hurt to be that good anyway :smug:

So, that is my one thing to do this year. Any questions or tips or comments or whatever, feel free to post. Any ridicule will be met with a strike from the T.A.T. And mythos, if you are still around, your imput is valued as well. (Plus we can talk about the upcoming Tour Down Under, and how Stuart O'Grady is gonna mess it up bad!)

The question is not so much needing TT bars for your bike, but is you bike geared and designed for TTs? You'll need a light stiff frame with favorable gearing to get the most out of your bike. Best of Luck!

I'm not so much focused on winning the TT as much as getting used to TTing in general, so that is why I want the bars. However, I didn't think about the gears and such. I know virtually nothing about bike mechanics, just enough to be able to fix tires and stuff, so I will have to look into that.
I know it wasn't designed for TTs, but it is pretty light and stiff, so that would help.

I've been reading about the old riders, and until Greg LeMond came around they just used regular bikes for the TT. If they could do it, why not me?

Hehehehe - good call pancake.

My father rides a TT bike as his main bike, and it's geared higher than my general purpose bike - mine climbs better because of the lower gearing, but his is better for sustaining higher speeds, and it corners a little better. I just like mine better because it's more versatile and it has the STI shifting.

Mine is geared pretty high, I'd say. I have no way of confirming exactly how high, but it feels as though it is rather high. Then again, if climbing is lower gears, then I may be wrong. I always thought you shifted to a medium-high gear for climbing, so I might just be bass-ackwards on this.

I suspect we're talking about the same thing, just using different terms ;-)

I always liked climbing hills better because I'm kind of a short person, so being lighter really helped me, so I did well there.
