    my first casino trip

A big group of us spent the night at a nearby casino/hotel for my sister's birthday. Happy to report that I came out ahead $65 off the blackjack table.

Casinos have a very interesting atmosphere to them. Great place for people watching. There are the people who are there just for the hell of it (like we were) and are laughing it up, the weekend warriors who are kind of serious but don't care too much, the hard gamblers who are yelling and banging on stuff, the creepy old drunk sleazy guys who made no attempt to hide the oogling of my sister and her friend, and, sadly enough probably the biggest abundance of people were the lonely elder slot machine players. Hundreds of them sitting by themselves clutching their money and staring at the spinning symbols.

It's definitely fun. I can see why people like going to Vegas for the weekend every couple of months. As long as you know when to walk away. Anyone got any entertaining casino stories?

When I finally get to one, I'll let you know. As of now, I only have online "casino" stories and they aren't that interesting. I won $1 in blackjack, woo!

I went to the casino in Windsor once for a date. It was really cool they have a really big waterfall inside and it's just really nice. My date and I got all dressed up and had a fancy dinner and went to the blackjack tables. I lost all my money but he gave some money to play the slots. I went off on my own and came back to find him at the highstakes tables. $500 minimum bet and all that jazz. Well I started thinking maybe this guy has money to burn but then I found out that he was a cokehead and dealt the stuff. I guess I should have put this over in the worst date thread but it was kind of funny. I never saw the guy again but I remember the casino was pretty cool.

when I went to that wedding we got drunk and wandered down the strip, only funny incident was me chucking a nickel and watching the subsequent tussle over it

it was mildly embarassing being around so many amateur gamblers, trying to tell them that Tropicana still uses coins, argh... frustrating...

There are some nice ones a short ride from Rhode Island. IIRC Foxwoods, in Ledyard CT is the largest casino in the world. Worth checking out.

When I turn 21 in about a month, I plan to go to nearby Reno and spend some time at the blackjack table. I'm more interested in learning the ways of card counting and then using them to my advantage than actually winning money, but if I do win some money I wont be complaining.

They often use more than one deck of cards. FYI

They infact use as many as 6 or more decks at a time. I hope you are a genius with a superhuman memory and perfect system for counting them.

heh, no not quite. I was under the assumption that they use just 1 deck. Shows how much I know about casinos :bonk:

Bah, gambling is boring. The best part about casinos is the free booze. :drink:

And they stick a marker in to reshuffle ALL cards when they are through roughly 3/4 of them. So even if you counted all cards, you would still have to guess between approx 50 cards.
Counting, however, can improve your odds to marginally above the break-even point.

Black-jack, in fact, is the game where you will loose the least in the casino.

I have a very simple system, and I usually walk away with some money from the black-jack table:
If the banks draws a 2-6 on the first card: bet/raise high. If the bank has a ten or an ace: raise nothing.
And the thing I consider a good thing to do: NEVER GO BUST: if you have 12, just pass. The bank can go bust too, but if you go first, you will loose anyway.

    Grr pIER

I tried card counting once, just at home with 2 decks, and after 10 minutes I thought my head would explode. It's a LOT harder than it looks.
Over spring break, we went to Aruba, and since I'm 18 I could gamble (though I looked 18 when I was 15 and I prolly could have gambled then too because NO ONE checks IDs for anything whatsoever) and I was up like $20 in blackjack for a while, then I lost it and my $20 I started with really fast, so I've learned my lesson and will stick to video poker and craps.

I believe the house has a pretty thin edge in baccarat too. Not to mention some of the most successful strategies are the most boring. Always bet on the banker, or bet on the winner of last hand or something like that.

Actually you need a minimum of a sports jacket. And jeans are also disallowed.
