My character is an idiot.

My character wont listen to me when I tell him to run away from a fight.

He just stands there and keeps swinging as I'm trying to get him to run into the town portal.

This is my first time playing the game so I don't know if there's any kind of stat related to this (I don't think so but you never know), or if I'm doing something wrong like maybe putting the portal too close to the boss.

Oh, and why do my helpers keep dying after one hit? Their stats are close to mine. Though they are 10 levels lower.

What attack or skill are you using? If it's a multi-hit one, like Zeal, Fury, or Strafe, you won't be able to do anything (like run away somewhere) until the attack has completed successfully. By completed, I mean that those attacks attack a set number of times (Zeal and Fury - 5 times, Strafe - increases per lvl), and they have to finish. So, if you're in the middle of a 6-hit attack, you can't run away until all 6 hits have been completed. The only counters to this is when your attack gets interrupted or when you run out of monsters to hit.

Mercs recieve more damage from monsters, and though they may look stronger than you, die and get hurt more often. Unless they have some good equipment, you have look after them to make sure they don't die.

Put on some gear with Faster Hit Recovery. It makes a huge difference on how quickly you can recover when getting hit.

For your merc, are you playing expansion? If so, make sure you have put some decent gear on your merc. They are not as durable as you, and they need some help.

The reason you cannot move could well be hit-lock or block-lock. Whenever you get hit, you are stunned for a short amount of time before you can react again. Same if you successfully block the attack. If you are getting hit a lot by a mob of creatures around you, you could never be able to move and just end up dying.

Try to make sure your merc has life leech of at least 5% and it will help him live a lot longer.

There can be two different problems when you try to get to a town portal:

1. Monsters can block the TP, so you can´t click on it. This happens a lot if the monsters are big (tall) and stand right below the TP. The result will be a click on the monster instead, hence, you attack it. The cursor may be right where the portal is, but if the hover bar says "(monster name)" instead on "Town Portal", you won´t reach the portal when you click on that particular spot.

2. You can click on the portal, but monsters are in the way of your character´s path to it. This sounds not like it´s your problem, though, because in this situation, the character wouldn´t make any attacks.

What you can do is to make sure you release the attack button (don´t just move the cursor), then click on the portal again (or even better, click on some open ground, run over there, then cast a portal and go through it).
