Mules

I'm having a problem getting a mule started. I started a new storage character on a friend's account. I even went out and bought a second expansion disk so I can play the game on two computers. However, when I try to log my mule in I get a message saying that my CD key is already logged in on another computer, and that I can't get into Battle.net. Is there any way to get around this problem without buying another copy of original diablo 2? Thanks...

In order to run two copies of diablo 2 on battle.net, you'll need two D2 classic CD-keys, and two D2 expansion CD-Keys.

An interesting thread of self muling can be found here

If your friend has an account, couldn't he hold your items while you quit and rejoin as your mule character?

If you have two seperate computers running two seperate installations and keys, though, then there should be no problem, right? That's what it sounds like he's doing.

He only has two expansion CD-Key's, and one classic CD-Key (which it seems he used for both installations). He'll need another classic CD-Key in order to be able to log onto battle.net with two seperate computers running two seperate installations.

Interesting link, thanks. I tried self-muling by running a second instance of diablo 2. I have Windows XP, but when I double-clicked the diablo icon nothing happened. Then I tried switching users while keeping diablo 2 running on one user, but that only resulted in ye ole rejection message: your cd key is already being used. Are there any threads that give detailed instructions on how to mule using 2 instances on Windows XP? Thanks!

You need two sets of CD keys. This also means you need either two separate installations, or a starter program that can refill keys as needed.

Whether you use Alt-Tab or the XP User Switch doesn't matter for the keys --- it's bnet that checks the keys, not the local installation.

On the topic of multiple cd keys

Is it legit to run 2 copies at once on the same machine?

I mean if u buy 2 copies of classic and Xpansion, then Blizzard shouldnt mind if we use a different starter program? Or do they mind?

Just curious :)

Well, the battle.net terms of use (http://www.battle.net/tou.shtml) mentions this:

4. Your Use of Battle.net.

A. You are entitled to use Battle.net for your own personal use, but you shall not be entitled to

..

(xvii) create or maintain, under any circumstance, more than one simultaneous connection to Battle.net. All such connections to Battle.net, whether created by Blizzard software products or by other tools and utilities, may only be made through methods and means expressly approved by Blizzard Entertainment. ...
But I guess it depends on how you interpret it. For all we know, it might be referring to the same copy of D2 being ran multiple times, and not two legal copies of D2, but when we also read:

(v) use any third-party software to modify Battle.net to change game play, including, but not limited to cheats and/or hacks;

..

(xv) modify any file that Blizzard does not specifically authorize you to modify;
It sounds like it might be against the Terms of Use

argghhhh serious...

Coz I just use a loading program to run 2 copies at once... I have 2 computers, but I just find it easier to burn new mules in the background.

Plus the loader program doesnt modify any of blizzards files? It just runs the .exe file itself doesnt it? after optimizing a few things?

Or am I wrong here?

So does that mean I should really be using both my computers, and not just one computer?

What do u guys reckon?

I just thought that since I bought 2 copies, they shouldnt really care how I use em... but I guess like u said its very debatable

I don't have much experience with the loader program, so I don't know if it does modify any of blizzards files or not. What do you mean by "optimizing a few things" :D Is that the one where you add the dll file?

Overall, it would still fall into the "third party program" category, and it does change how you would normally execute the game (or am I wrong?). Still, I', not sure if many people here would consider it a hack, at least when compared to bots or MH.

This is what it does :

Loads the first copy with your original CD Key and expansion CD Key as normal.

then if u have another CD Key and expansion key (authentic) then it can load that one up but in a smaller screen, and with less colours, so that it doest use as much CPU power. I just find it handy for burning mules in, thats all I really use it for.

And for occassionally rushing myself when I make a new character, or using my enchantress to pre-buff my new characters.

It says in the readme file that no files are changed, all it does is allow you to run 2 copies at the same time, by feeding battlenet all 4 of your Cd keys.

If its not legit then I will stop doing it and revert back to using 2 comps, its just a bit more annoying thats all.

How about if u use windows XP's multi user function, would that be ok?

Again, it goes back to how you interpret the 17th condition of your use of battle.net. When they say "maintain, under any circumstances, more than one simultaneous connection to Battle.net", do you believe it's in relation to using only 1 set of CD-Keys to run multiple copies of diablo 2, or is it multiple copies of diablo 2 as a whole?

Personally, I take it that a CD-Key can only have one instance of Diablo 2 running at any given time, but then Blizzard had to go and say under any circumstances are we to run more than one simultaneous connection to Battle.net.

Edit: Also, I guess you would have to look at the fact that Diablo 2 was not designed to be able to have more than one instance ran at any time, and that the loader program is indeed a third party program (though so is ATMA, so ... )

It's pretty ambiguous, isn't it :(

Yeah, ahh well, I will just run it on 2 different computers no biggy, I just found it easier to run them both on my laptop in the lounge while my gf watches TV :)

Better to be safe than sorry I guess!
