People do mule trades when their schedule makes trading in person difficult. Basically, one person makes an account for the trade. That person then puts the items he or she is trading onto a character in the new account. The second person exchanges the items that are being traded when he or she is able to, and then the person that set up the account retrieves the traded items from the account.
Some people need to do this type of trade a lot, because in-person trades just don't work for them. Many people actually have an account they use just for mule trades.
