Movement Control

Greetings,

I'd like to know if there is any information out there regarding movement control.

In the gameplay trailer, Jay Wilson said you can play the game one-handed with a mouse, like D2. From the hotbar I also got the impression that you can now also use skills with keyboard strokes to 1, 2, 3 etc.

Will it also be possible to move around with WASD or is movement still only possible with the mouse?

Maybe someone that went to Blizzcon or knows the information regardless could enlighten me.

Would be really nice if you could control the game like World of Warcraft, so you don't need to strain one hand all the time.

I would hate playing D3 using w a s d. To me it seems like doing that would just be WoW-ifying a game that is completely unique.

For the record, Diablo is not unique. It wasn't even the first or the best; it was just the most popular.

I like the WASD option, click fest gets old after a while.

You don't have to do that, it is confirmed that you can play it the way you played D2 if you want to.

It would only better the game if there are other options.

Anyway, it's still great that you can now use your skills from the keyboard, movement with the mouse is not the problem then, but doing both with the mouse gets tiresome for one hand. :/

I agree, I would love a WSAD option, it would just be that, another option, you would still be able to control normally on the mouse.

The first thing that comes to mind is that some may prefer to use WASD as hotkeys rather than movement. I wouldn't mind alternate movement, myself, although I'd probably still stick with the mouse.

Re: Movement Control

Won't WSAD movement control be a liability on what is meant to be a point-and-click isometric view?

1. The ability to click further away from the player character and the full 360 degree movement this gives is a tactical advantage against a more limited and strenuous finger control.

2. Targeting still needs to be done with the mouse which will cancel any WSAD movement, making WSAD somewhat redundant.

3. WSAD demands a minimum of 3 fingers and the other hand must be with the mouse (for targeting). This will limit greatly the ability to quickly switch skills. The hand used on the WSAD keys needs to move.

Dunno... didn't seem to me such a good idea. Are you guys sure you would want this?

What other game was like daiblo that came out before hand. I cant hink of anything before diablo that had such a simple addicting gameplay, and wether or not if it was the best or not is purely opinion, ad to me Diablo has been the best game series i have played, closly followed by Zelda and God of war.

if there was an option for WASD i would not mind it, i would not use it. i think that would complicate the game more, seeing how you use the mouse to do everything like aiming and targeting. you could use this option, but i think you would be at a disadvantage, so i bet is not going to be in the game.

I think Diablo is known for how simple it is, there no reason to complicate controls of the game. Before you jump down my throat, i had a friend recently who i showed stuff about D3 who never played the agme before. Friend is a very hardcore gamer, i gave him an extra copy of D2 i ahd and installed it on his pc and loved how simple it was to understand and play. I dont think the game mechanics where built for WASD, and i dont think they are needed. Playing game that use this and how it works for this those games such as WOW and many FPS i have played on the PC, i dont think they will work in Diablo very well.

My fingers would probably like WASD since they wouldn't be in so much pain after spam clicking for a couple of days straight. Though it wouldn't feel like diablo without the mouse movement imo.

Re: Movement Control

What do you mean by WSAD? I cant hink of atleast 3 ways to move.

W=north, S=south, A=west, D=east? Some games use ne, se, sw, and nw in addition to those.

W=forward, S=backwards, A=turn left, D=turn right?

W=move towards the mouse pointer, S=move away from the mouse pointer, A=move around the mouse pointer clockwise(strafe left), D=move around the mouse pointer counter clockwise(strafe right)?

first one wouldn't work, it would essentially limit your movement towards the main 4 cardinal directions.

Second option would work but would be kinda awkward. How fast can you turn from keyboard without making you hard to 'aim' which direction you wanna go.

Third option would work quite well. It would also free up mouse keys for spell use. This would infact work even better than normal mouse click movement. You could keep the mouse pointer on the enemy constantly ready to fire spells but be able to move quite freely. You could also alter this by only setting the W key ignoring rest and using them for spells.

Re: Movement Control

I think the WASD controls are more for 3rd person view. With an isometric game its much easier to point to your location than to try and maneuver with WASD. With the 3rd person view you could just turn your character 10 degrees left and head straight from there with W and you will be looking in the right direction. In isometric the game always stays in the same spot so you would be constantly pressing W then A, then hold W, then tap A, etc. You would look rediculous! So choppy, not fluent at all. No thanks, please keep WASD out!!

Although, this click happy genre will most likely leave us all as old men/women with good memories but horrid cases of carpotunnel in our mouse hand.

Re: Movement Control

I could go for WASD movement. I hope they keep shift as the "hold still" button too. Contrary to what is suggested in this thread, I'm pretty nimble with my wasd fingers and could probably maneuver and switch skills easy enough.

You'll never need all 3 fingers for WASD movement. I personally often use just 2 if quick A<->D responses aren't vital; index and middle finger.
Other than that: How would you quickly switch skills?
For what I've seen, you have the hotbar, which is easily accesible even when holding down W all the time (shift too, if you want to), and the 2 LMB skills. I think switching between LMB skills is either scrolling or pressing Tab, both of which shouldn't interfere with WASD movement.
If you mean the F1-F12 skill switching: The hotbar takes care of that mostly, and F1-F4 aren't hard to reach (for me, at least). Even then, if WASD movement is implemented, you can mousewalk at the same time most likely. When you really cannot use WASD for half a second because you have to reach for F3, click with the mouse once and voici, a second of movement.

I don't see a problem myself.

Also, movement isn't fatal ;)
