    Most extravagant rune use

I was wondering at what point we've all thrown restraint out of the window and thought "stuff it" I *am* making that runeword?

Whether it was the sheer cost of the runes or the oddness of the base item; when did you throw caution to the wind and create a runeword that you knew would have people :scratchchin: and ?

For me it was probably my non-eth Infinity
    Thresher
    'BerMalBerIst'
    Two-Hand Damage: 50 to 589
    Durability: 65 of 65
    Required Dexterity: 118
    Required Strength: 152
    Required Level: 63
Polearm Class - Fast Attack Speed
    Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
    Item Level: **
    Fingerprint: 0xbb95ffb2
    +318% Enhanced Damage
30% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
    35% Faster Run/Walk
    Prevent Monster Heal
    40% Chance of Crushing Blow
Level 12 Conviction Aura When Equipped
50% Chance to cast Level 20 Chain Lightning When You Kill an Enemy
Level 21 Cyclone Armor (30/30 Charges)
+0 to Vitality (Based on Character Level)
    -54% to Enemy Lightning Resistance
    Socketed (4: 4 used)
that I know raised a few eyebrows in 1.12a. But I knew I wanted to use it on non-mercs so it had to be. Threshers for speed on a range of chars.

Before that was Beast and Grief. The (then unknown as an ATMA bug) cost had me gulping. And that was before making the Beast and Grief themselves and the risk of a low roll.

    Well, what about you guys?

    Re: Most extravagant rune use

Well, last ladder season, I made plenty of high end runewords I'd end up never using.
Of course, back then hrs were amazingly common and when trading with/for hrs on closed bnet it was best to have the base item ready to prevent poofing. One of the many things I don't miss since my move to SP.

Of all the items tho, i think my last wish was the worst. For those runes, you'd expect a better weapon. Those jahs and bers are better off in enigmas or something =)

    Re: Most extravagant rune use

The most exciting/scary moments have definitely been the two ATMA bugged Grief BA's, but they don't really qualify as extravagant moments, as the end result is more or less the best possible melee weapon available, so it's not like you're "wasting" runes when making them, like it would feel if you made a Last Wish. The other high-end runewords I've made have all been big moments, but again something I worked towards for a long time, and therefore didn't see as being wasteful or extravagant in any way.

Oh actually, I guess making HoTo #3 might qualify. I originally had 2 since they were on my Trav Barb's switch, but I grew tired of switching one to my LightSorc and/or Hammerdin, so I made a third one. I was pretty close to making #4 at one point as well to avoid switching between the Paladin and the Sorceress, but I stopped playing the Hammerdin temporarily at that point and forgot about it.

Other than that, it might be spending so many Ist runes to further optimize my various magic finders. I have a 4-Ist Monarch, Ist'd Gull, Ist'd Death's Web, Ist'd Homunculus, dual Ist'd Wizardspike, and Ist'd 1.07 Harlequin Crest (most recent, for the MFO). The Shako is of course the most "extravagant", gaining only 1 MF over a PTopaz, but it's bcoe who deserves the credit for that, not me.

I'll unzip my SC stashed just for this thread. The thing is not expensive(relatively), but I think it will drop some jaws.

    The Pike

I agonized a lot over making an eBotD specifically for WW in a base that didn't hit the LWWBP. After significant number crunching and perpetual mutterings about "style points", I finally went for it.

I haven't done this yet, but I'm considering a serious waste of runes...

I'd like to make a Phoenix for my Berserker in a big, nasty, ATMA bugged 1.07 ethereal base. I'm thinking Glorious Axe, because they look so fantastic and aren't very common. I haven't participated in any ATMA bugging shennanigans yet, so I'm still a little ethically on the fence, which is the biggest snag. It's also hard to convince myself to use a Jah on it when I don't have an Enigma or Faith yet...

    Re: Most extravagant rune use

This wasn't horribly expensive, but certainly an unexpected base, used for a two run (less than 2 minutes) speed test.

    Oath
    Phase Blade
    ShaelPulMalLum
    One Hand Damage: 101 - 114
    Indestructible
    Required Level: 54
    Required Strength: 25
    Required Dexterity: 136
    Fingerprint: 0x51aeae03
    Item Level: 85
    Version: Expansion 1.10+
30% Chance to cast level 20 Bone Spirit on striking
    Indestructible
    +50% Increased Attack Speed
    226% Enhanced Damage
    +75% Damage to Demons
+100 to Attack Rating against Demons
    Prevent Monster Heal
    +10 to Energy
    +15 Magic Absorb
Level 17 Iron Golem (14/14 Charges)
Level 16 Heart of Wolverine (20/20 Charges)
    4 Sockets (4 used)

This was for the runeword grail:

    Wind
    Berserker Axe
    SurEl
    One Hand Damage: 56 - 168
    Durability: 15 of 26
    Required Level: 64
    Required Strength: 138
    Required Dexterity: 59
    Fingerprint: 0x51fc0bda
    Item Level: **
    Version: Expansion 1.10+
10% Chance to cast level 9 Tornado on striking
    +20% Faster Run/Walk
    +40% Increased Attack Speed
    +15% Faster Hit Recovery
    137% Enhanced Damage
    -50% Target Defense
    +50 to Attack Rating
    Hit Blinds Target +1
    +1 to Light Radius
    Level 13 Twister (127/127 Charges)
    2 Sockets (2 used)

And this, though not a runeword, is probably my most extravagant rune use because it was pre-1.13.

    Guardian Angel
    Templar Coat
    Defense: 1186
    Durability: 31 of 31
    Required Level: 55
    Required Strength: 108

    +30% Faster Block Rate
    20% Increased Chance of Blocking
+245 to Attack Rating against Demons (Based on Character Level)
    +188% Enhanced Defense
    +15% to Maximum Poison Resist
    +15% to Maximum Cold Resist
    +15% to Maximum Lightning Resist
    +20% to Maximum Fire Resist
    +4 to Light Radius Ethereal
    1 Sockets (1 used)

It currently gets great mileage on my Frost Maiden, GA/MS Bowzon, and Gunslinger. It saves the hassle of having to keep a 'Call to Arms' in my H.Cube when going Bow/Jav.

    Re: Most extravagant rune use

Nothing much here. My biggest "extravagance" is a 4 Ist monarch for my Blizz sorc, but by 1.13 standards, 4 Ist runes isn't a big deal. Countess will drop 4 Ists (or cubing equivalent in Pul/Um/Mal) within a few hours of running. I think it's worth having as a Pindle farming tool, but if it weren't for 1.13's drop rates, I doubt that I'd have made it.

I was recently hemming and hawing over cubing my 2 Surs and making Enigma for my Fishy. Does he really need it? He'd lose %MF, he wouldn't gain any more skellies, and he can already teleport if he wants to via a Naj's he keeps on switch. Blowing those runes on Fishy would put me that much farther away from Infinity for my Chainorb, who would get a pure Lit respec and become way more powerful/useful.

@Bcoe: Your Ice is next on my list of RWs to make.

I also have an infinity similar to Thy's in my SC stashes, but when I made it, non eth was allready normal.

How not to use a Cham, a Sur, and Io and a Lo

I knew this was a waste of runes, but I just couldn't resist (IIRC I was so underwhelmed that I have yet to post it on the IFT). In a nutshell: Melee builds are better off with Reaper's on Merc, while casters are better off with Infinity. Tried it on:

Berserker barb, Fishymancer, Bowazon (other builds are just screaming NOOOOO). I only found it noticeable on the Bowie, but even in that case Reaper's is better. Will also try it on a Fury druid if I even make one, even though I can guess the result :p.

    Re: Most extravagant rune use

For me it's the enigma I made yesterday, I gave up on my hope to find jah/ber and decided to use the runes I had, let's see:
    4 sur
    3 lo
    4 vex

There are at least 4 RW's in that enigma: silence, CoH, chaos, bramble…

I'll gladly take it off your hands.

For me, probably the 'Ice' Diamond Bow from 1.12. Both fun and useful, but probably not worth the runes back then. Not even sure where it is at the moment... :badteeth:

    Re: Most extravagant rune use

I think that my most extravagant rune use was running for and making a 1.12a Enigma starting from nothing. I mean, if you miraculously find yourself with a Jah it is a logical goal, but starting from scratch is a bit presumptuous.

For 1.13c, I made a third grief, this time in a phase blade, to compare to some rare daggers and Griz caddy on a fuzzy-dodger. I killed a couple of monsters and that was that. I never touched it again.

Before my giveaway I was seriously considering making an ethereal, Zod-ATMA-Bugged, Fury Balrog blade. Instead of going for such a ridiculous BvB weapon the runes went to better causes. Seriously, what use is the ethereal Fury unless you have a matching 4k sacred fortitude? :p
