I was thinking of the original Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky. (And ELP ripped that piece for their introduction and ending.)

Spring is coming, time for Beethoven's 6th symphony, one of the best pieces he ever wrote.

    (part 1)

Karajan is simply the best at performing Beethoven symphonies!

And yes, I like Prokovjev's Dance of the Knights... although I'm not that much a fan of ballet itself.

to Quote someone from the comments
"as a classical musician I'm totally offended by the fact that they put words to The Great Gates of Kiev
as rock musician...it was OK pretty cool"

krischan - Spring is Vivaldi again for me.

    Edit and Google today agrees:

Time for another piece of epic music.

Joseph Haydn, Die Schöpfung (The Creation).

The most epic part starts at about 8:00, but it's worth hearing from the beginning. I think it had a significant impact on epic pieces from Beethoven and Wagner.

    (Angels' choir, 8:32)
    Und Gott sprach:
    Es werde Licht.
    Und es ward
    LICHT!

    ...

    Und Gott sah das Licht,
    Dass es gut war,
    Und Gott schied das Licht
    von der Finsternis.

    And God spoke:
    Let there be light.
    And there was
    LIGHT!

    ...

    And god saw the light,
    that is was good,
    and god divided the light
    from the darkness.

    Epic!

I must say, it doesn't sound very "Hadynish". Definitely sound like Mozart or even Beethoven.

Re: Most epic piece of classic/romantic music ?

That's no surprise, as Beethoven was his pupil and Mozart was a close friend :azn:

During the premiere of the Creation, the orchestra had to pause for a few minutes after the "and there was light" part because the audience was so much electrified by it.

Why is this still not here?

    Richard Wagner, opera "Tannhäuser", Pilgerchor.

I'm sure everyone has heard it, and there are many homages and parodies. Doesn't make the original any less magnificent.

I also noticed a couple other choices in the thread I completely agree with... I'm wondering if I should post an mp3 link to "1812 Overture" by Tchaikovsky, the video posted here was quite horrible. I have a recording I'm wholly entitled to post, given that the orchestra that performed it was my own.

    @feysal - nice one.

I'm pretty sure everyone who spent some time in choirs knows these - but they are amazing:

You know......, I recall seeing on a blog a few days ago about the San Francisco Symphony's marketing director was advertising this same symphony (Shostakovich's 13th) with words like "romantic" a few years past, when it was being performed coincidentally on Feb 14. The blog entry said she didn't last long on her job.

Beethoven's fifth symphony, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Karajan conducting. Not the first movement, but the fourth. Warning, it's pretty loud at the beginning:

IMO, the first minute is one of the greatest moments of classical music.
