Loss From a Distance Part 1 & 2 by Buckethead from the album Condensed Chicken Noodles. The entire song is 18 minutes.

Frankly, I love all songs from that album, but this one I find the most worthy of posting :] Also from the limited edition Cyborg Slunks, Aunt Suzie

It cuts off at minute 10 because that is the limit for uploading songs on YouTube. The actual song is more or less 13 minutes.

Lohengrin prelude from Wagner, conducted by Furtwängler:

This music is pure. The grandeur of heaven, finding its culmination at 6:00. Wonderful *sniff*

Probably because boogyman thought that I meant romantic music in general while I actually meant the romantic period of music in the 19th century.

Double post but todays it's Anniversary

    On this day...

    December 22:
1808 – German composer Ludwig van Beethoven premiered his Fifth Symphony, currently one of the most popular and well-known compositions in all of European classical music, at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.

    Well spotted!

I heard the premiere was quite a failure, even though a few of the greatest musical masterpieces of all time were played for the first time (5th symphony, 6th symphony and more). Several hours of music in a very cold theatre and the musicians didn't have enough time to prepare, that couldn't go well.

Are you trying to suggest that in the 20th/21st century there is no music to which you'd like to make out to a beautiful woman? pfft... you people are of such high standards...

I agree with the above. There are 20th century classical epic work too. For example, Shostakovich's symphonies. My current favourite of that set is Babi Yar. How much more epic can you get than a piece which describes both the Holocaust and the oppressions in the Soviet Union at the same time?

It's just about a certain genre of music, not about what is good when dating girls. Just like making a thread about beer doesn't mean that I don't like wine while both makes drunk.

And yes, I know there are a lot of 20th century pieces of the classical and romantic genre . I even mentioned a few myself. I just mentioned the 19th century because that was the main period of the romantic music genre.

Re: Most epic piece of classic/romantic music ?

Hmm, that's alll gg and such but... how do depressing things such as the Holocaust and the Soviet oppresions seem romantic?

Kris, I know I know :] I was making a light hearted joke :) But both Loss From A Distance and Aunt Suzie seem to attract me with their slowness and interesting performance :D I can't say that much about Electric Tears which... well, it kind of bores me >.> I find the "emotion" in those songs so depressing that before I get to feel sad I fall asleep or just change the song... whichever comes first really ^.^

If it is truly depressing, you won't fall asleep...... It will be disturbing enough that you will be unable to work for the rest of the day. I had such an experience while listening to Mahler's 6 at full volume.

Actually, I figure you're quite right... I guess they are straight up boring so to speak >.> I had such an experience for the first time with Epitaph by King Crimson... there was something about that song that just creeped the hell out of me and I thought about it later for a while >.> Shown to me by my uncle after which I decided to explore Progressive genres a bit more :] Today, I love that song even though it always delivers to me that weird and gloomy feeling >.>

    Wagner, Rheingold prelude:

    Turn up the volume!

Now if that's not powerful and grand, in particular the basses at the beginning, I don't know what else can be.

OK, Wagner again, but as I wrote in my first posting, he's the King Kong of epic music.

Edit: This would be my number one among the *grandest* pieces of music ever, in particular 5:00+.

All this time I thought it was about a old witch in a magic hut that had chicken feet.

I think that's Baba Yaga. There's a piece written about that one as well in Pictures at an Exhibition. Babi Yar is a ravine in Ukraine where they murdered over 30000 Jews during WWII.
