Cybernoid II performed by an orchestra. I never even played the game, but it truly sounds epic!

The music starts at 1:00 or so btw...

Is this thread only for instrumental music?

    If not...

Blast from the past when there was actually good music:

Friedman and Becker - Speed Metal Symphony

    This is so beautiful!

As for epic, I'm surprised no one has mentioned this: It builds up towards the climax at 2:06.

A favourite of mine is Liszt' Chasse-Neige, played by Arrau. It wasn't epic, until Berezovsky played it, focusing less on interpretation and beauty and more on speed and technique. The result: overall not as great an interpretation, but with some extremely epic moments. The epicness starts at 2:44.

2:20 to 3:20 should give you a pretty good idea. This is Brahms' German Requiem, made doubly epic by its words. "For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower thereof falleth away."

"Denn alles Fleisch, es ist wie Gras.
Und alle Herrlichkeit des Menschen wie des Grases Blumen.
Das Gras ist verdorret und die Blume abgefallen."

Dark, broody, gloomy, epic! That piece has found a place among my favourites. Thanks for sharing.

To revive the topic, here's another masterpiece, Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor from Johann Sebastian Bach, the godfather of heavy metal guitar solos! Pleayed by the greatest organist I know (Karl Richter) and on a magnificient organ. This incredible organ piece is taking you from the depths of the Abyss right into Heaven!

The last 3 minutes are particularly powerful. 7:55 FTW! Turn the volume up

I don't think you can get any closer to the voice of god than in 8:31!

Organ pieces are so magnificient because it involves an instrument which needs a full-blown cathedral! Grand organs must be BIG, POWERFUL and LOUD! Bass pipes like phone booths? YES! For organs, size does matter!

If there's anything like an orgasm in organ music, the last minute is it. This piece of music has the greatest final chord ever!

Re: Most epic piece of classic/romantic music ?

I've always had a fondness for the The Triumphal March from Aida. Sadly, most versions I've heard fall short of the version I first heard when I was about 10, with most using either a solo trumpet or even no trumpet at all and using a violin instead :(

This is the best version I found after about half an hour on YouTube, although this one is also very good. The piece is just robbed of it's grandeur when it's done as a trumpet solo, you really need the multiple trumpets.

FFS, why do all my YouTube links come out as white squares? This is the link to the video if it isn't working.

You have to enter nothing but the code. If you come to the Youtube page by following a link in there, it will have a feature=related part in the URL and AFAIK the code is the one from the previous video you watched. The real code of the video can be found at the top right of the page, it's bMnl1URCH3w in your case.

Try it by editing your post or have a look by pressing the reply button of another posting ;)

Ahh. I should have remembered that one, I've had the same problem before.

Still doesn't show for me after editing, though.

I fixed it for you, you just have to enter that weird code, not the complete URL. Have a look in there through the edit button ;)

Mahler's 6th, in particular the first and last movement (though the final movement does not get epic until ~5 minutes into the piece)

Re: Most epic piece of classic/romantic music ?

Organ music can be pretty epic :D. Here are a few of my favorites:

Epic 19th century french organ music:
Allegro and Final from Charles-Marie Widor's 6th Symphony.

Epic 20th century french organ music:
    Jehan Alain: Litanies

A non-organ, maybe more insane than epic, piece of music:
The 5th movement from Olivier Messiaen's Turangalîla symphony.

I wanted to post the second movement of Brahm's German requiem as well, but apparently I wasn't the only one to think of that one.

I'm amazed that no one has mentioned Moonlight Sonata. For me, a total newbie in music theory etc., this piece sure is epic. Sure, it doesn't bring about any feelings of grandeur per se, but it's such a sad and also beautiful piece of art that it moves me everytime I hear it.

Oh, as proud Finn, I must mention Jean Sibelius

Offtopic: Observe the youtube discussion (Metallica vs. Beethoven) for epic lulz.

Seeing as nobody else has mentioned him, I have to highlight Bear McCreary's work on Battlestar Galactica. His score is absolutely superb and performed in symphonies at opera houses. Here are a few of my favourites -

    Passacaglia

The Shape of Things to Come

    Prelude to War

Other pieces, such as The Storming of New Caprica and All Along the Watchtower, need to be seen in context to really see just how epic they are. And yes, Bear McCreary's version of All Along the Watchtower is truly epic given that it's on a galactic scale.

Re: Most epic piece of classic/romantic music ?

I love The Swan. Not exactly epic, but whatever ;)

Been listening to my friend perform Beethoven's symphonies, EXTREMELY impressive. And also some Organ pieces, which I'll get the name for soon. I hate the Organ but when he plays them on the piano they are pretty damn impressive.

My favourite pieces include Nocturne (op9, might be) and Claire De Lune. The first one has sentimental value, they aren't that 'impressive' though. :whistling:

    KT

Edit: My fault. I got lost along the way and was just writing about my favourite pieces. Perhaps all of the pieces I said would be better fitting in the melancholic section. Beethoven's symphonies on the other hand, ouch, you should watch them being played.

I thought that song was pretty catchy. The video might be bordering on tasteless though.
