More than -200% enemy cold resist?

I currently play an 87 orb/ts sorc on west ladder for pvp, my cold mastery is at -185% which I'm planning to max, and I'm told -200% is the cap (I also have a 5/-4 facet).

After I max CM at -200% is it possible for me to strap on a doom axe for -resist and more facets, or do they not stack with capped CM?

    Any and all input welcome.

they do stack with CM -cold resist. So if u have 200 cold resist from CM + 60 from doom, then it becomes 260.

I could be wrong but... I was under the impression that any -res greater than (or technically less than...) -199 was useless unless you have conviction or lower resist.

Even with Conviction or Lower Resist more than -199% resist is useless in PvM. Since players may stack Cold Resist, getting 200% cold resist or more is useful.

the effective cap for resistance is -100. that means no monster or player can have less than -100% to any resist. so there is no cap on how much "-resist to enemies" you can have, but there is a cap on how low your enemies resist can get. make sense? so for an opponent with 75 cold resist, only -175 enemy resist is useful, since that enemy now has -100 cold resist.

It may be capped at 75% (or up to 95%) at the LCS, but the total cold resistance if reduced by CM. Stacking Cold res does work (a bit) against CM.

So is that means cold mastery can provide "only" -200 enemy cold resistance, despite the lvl we have. For example at 51 lvl Cold mastery the -enemy res have to be -270%. But if there is a cap at -200%, there is no point to bump the cold mastery over 37 lvl?

The minimum resistance cap is at -100, in PvM there's no point going further than -200, because any amount of cold resist, except those over 100, is then reduced to -100. In PvP cold resists can be way above 100, but since players can't be immune (with resists alone), CM has to reduce all cold resist on a player. After that the difficulty resistance penalty kicks in, but that won't let resists go below -100 either.

if a player opponent had 200% cold resist (stacked resist, but obviously players cant be cold immune), then up to -300% cold resist would be useful. so for example, having lvl51 CM (-270%), and 6 cold facets in various places (-30%) would take that player down to -100% cold resist. how does someone get 200% cold resist? a 4socket monarch with 4 perfect sapphires gets you 160% cold resist. and yes, people use these.

edit: so the moral is, in pvp you want as much cold mastery as is possible. people in pvp combat tend to load up on cold resistance against blizzard sorceresses. *sometimes* it will be overkill (against people with just 75% reisstance for example) but othertimes you will need to kill those people with stacked resistances.

There is no cap of -% enemy resist, there's only an effectiveness cap on -100%.

Your opponent can have 75% cold res in hell as well as 75% with 100% stacked. In case 1 you would need -175% cold res to get him down to the best effective numbers, -100%. In case 2 you would need -275% cold res to get him down to -100%.

If you ask me I'd say if you just can get your opponents resist down to 0 or below it's enough since the damage won't improve much from 0% to -100% as from 95% to 0%.
