Missing Character

So i'm not sure where to put this. I was playing my revenge of the 99ers Assassin and when i went to save and exit, my computer suddenly shut down. I rebooted and my character was suddenly gone from the selection menu, however, when I look at the files in my folder, the save files are still there. I tried to create another Assassin with the same name and I got the message that the name was already in use. In GoMule, the character shows a status of disconnected. I attempt to reconnect but it still doesn't work. Any ideas?

Make a new character and check it opens again OK and is in the same save path.

Sounds like the character is corrupted. Restore a GoMule backup and try that.

Does GoMule create its own backup? I've never created one.

Yes, in the same folder that your chars are located, GoMule makes backups (folder is called GoMule.backup)

I do manual backups almost everyday, in case shit happens :)

Anyway, when you find that folder you'll see many subfolders (sorted by date). In every one of those folders there are many files called "ISILDUR.2017.04.02-13.46.00.d2s.org" (wher ISILDUR is the name of my char). Change name of the file to "ISILDUR.d2s" and place it in the same folder where the regular chars are located. Open diablo 2 game and it should work.

If you can't find the files manually, just search your system for files with "d2s.org" in their name

You could also load the character into Gomule or ATMA, change something (move something around in the inventory or so) and save it again. Just don't try it too often, else your backups might consist of corrupted files only, in case it won't work.

I've never had to do this so we'll see how well I do. I'm at work now so don't worry about checking this for another 10 hours or so.

Make sure to backup the corrupted character when restoring a GoMule backup. If that doesn't work for some reason, you can always try the method described by @krischan .
