My merc uses Lore runeword (ort+sol) as a helm, Shaftstop and some sick unique weapon with 3 open socs and 200%+ ed and does about 2k.

Reaper's toll is really nice for mercs , except when you play necro , because that decrep is gonna cancel out your own curses. Arioc's is nice if you want a higher lvl aura (summoner's come in mind here). bonehew isn't bad either. BotD if you're really rich.:D

As for armor , shaft is always a nice choice. And I like crown of thieves for helmets alot. I socketed mine with an Ort (30% lightning resist). Which means my merc has fire / lightning resist covered in hell. (CoT has 33% fire resist on it)

Weapon: Biggest Damage thing you can find. Bonehew (Eth) as Smasher said or Eth
Arioc. A good N expensive Eth 3 socket Tomb Reaver with 3 Ists are nice as well.

Helm: A 12% CoT, a 10% Andy or if you double amn a Bonehew Guillaume's is very nice.

Armor: Forget the shaftstop, just do a Skullder's. The skills pump the aura, MF is always a good thing and or course Upped Ethereals are just too sweet on a Merc.

Mine can tank Lister and usually only go flop against Ob Knights. If I run the CS I take the weapon out of his hands until they're all dead.

My lvl 89 merc (with a Skelemancer) uses
- Crown of thieves, for the lifeleech
- a crappy rare armor for defense (still waiting for that Arkaine's :))
- a +4 Ariocs needle, currently not socketed --- haven't decided yet whether I want Shael or Amn in there

I'm also looking for a Steel Pillar (for the crushing blow), to keep in stash for diablo clone.

double amn a Bonehew
Instead of doing this with a Bonehew, it's generally recommended that you socket it with 1 Amn and 1 Shael. This will enable to you to reach the next IAS breakpoint on your Merc, meaning that he will attack faster, which will also mean that he will leach faster. This will increase your attacking speed as well as providing you with all the leach you will ever need. Better still is to socket with 1 Amn and 1 IAS jewel that has another useful mod on it, such as +ED%. You'll still reach the IAS breakpoint, as well as getting the benefit of the other mod, although these are obviously less hard to come by than Shael.

Another popular choice for a Summoner Merc is a Hone Sundan, for the abundance of Crushing Blow that it provides, or a +4 Ariocs for the boost to your might aura. Some people also advocate the Kelpie Snare for the slow attack mod, but I'm not a fan of this as gumbie and Decrep can easily take care of this attribute. My personal choice is the Bonehew.

Crushing Blow is extremely handy however, especially against bosses, so I use a Guillaime's Face for the 35% CB it gives. Combine this with a Duriel's Shell for Resists / CBF and you have a very versatile Merc setup.

The only problem you are likely to encounter will be Oblivion Knights who cast Iron Maiden on your merc, meaning that he invariably kills himself when he attacks. One way of getting round this is to remove the Merc's weapon until the curse wears off, reducing his damage so that only a negligible amount is returned when he attacks. This can be a bit of a pain however, particularly if you have space problems. Therefore if he gets IM'd, I tend to just accept it if he dies, but only Revive him when I have cleared the IM-infested area.

I've played with eth bonehews, but my personal favorite is hone sundan. You just can't beat that crushing blow. I've got a merc who has

Guilliams Face (35% crushing blow)
Malice Armor (15% crushing blow)
Upped Etherial Hone Sundan (45% crushing blow) = 95% crushing blow (maxed out, usually 3 cbs an attack due to jab)

The eth upped hone's physical damage rivals an eth bonehew's, although I know it is probably less common than one. My cb merc eats through bosses/high health monsters so fast it's sad, and these are the only monsters that slow skellies down. It would be difficult to decide whether a regular hone sundan is better than a bonehew though, in my experience with variations of both polarms (eth, non-eth, non upped non eth hone, ect) I have to say that a non-eth hone outplays a non-eth bonehew, an upped hone is about level with an eth bonehew, and an eth upped hone outshines an eth bonehew.

Does CB effect the damage returned to your merc from IM.

For example, my merc gets cussed with IM and then scores a successful Crushing Blow hit on a monster. Does my merc get the base damage of the hit returned to him, or the full force of the Crushing Blow that he inflicts on the monster he hits?

Thanks in advance,
EJ

For a summoner:

ethereal Andariel's Visage "ral"
ethereal Arkaine's Valor "um" or "pul"
ethereal Arioc's Needle "Amn"

that gives you lvl 25 might aura, which is why you get that merc in the first place and still makes him a mean killing machine :)

My Necro Might Merc's has-

Up'd Eth Hone Sudan Ghost Spear - Shael, Shael, Ber (65% Crushing Blow)
CoH Achron
Guillaime's Face (Cham) (35% Crushing Blow) and CBF

Total of 100% Crushing Blow, good damage(600+), 8% LL, +65 res All, 200% Dmg to Demons, 100% Damage to Undead, Can Not Be Frozen

In my experience no, it doesn't.

The only way I can justify this on paper to you is with the fact that CB does not effect leach.

However, at later levels even with a low damaging weapon iron maiden can put a nasty burn on your merc regardless :(

Very, very true. Where your little buddy gets his LL from is very telling as well.

I also like to use my favorite unsung armor, Eth & Upped Black Hades stoked with decent damage (IAS)jewelry for a change from the MF bonus of a skullders.
