MF ... inconsistencies...

I must admit that most MF calculations and such confuse me. I've never had the patience to read all the equations that factor in character level, MF, monster level, etc.

But today I saw the most perplexing example of odd MF behavior...

To give background, I have a level 85 MF sorc, with 450% mf on my switch. I started not too long ago, so i'm naturally not that good. I don't have a single runeword.

My friend has a level 74 sorc with about 300% mf. kinda crummy gear, but it works.

Well, today my friend found both tal rasha's ammy and an occulus from Nightmare Andy.

Today I found tgods from hell meph.

I was running a higher monster with more MF more times than him, and he still got better stuff. Well, i brought my MF down to about 300 and ran nm andy and meph about 20 times each.

Got nothing.

What's going on? How do i find good stuff? where do i go? how much MF? this is stupid.

I have never found an occy, shako, tal ammy, HoZ, nothing godly. I always have to trade for stuff. where do i get it?

Thanks for reading my dribble.

MF is a game of probabilities. By nature, it is inconsistant. Just because you got squat with more this time does not invalidate MF. In the long run, more is better. But it is still luck. Its like buying 1000 lottery tickets when your friend bought 1, and he won. Its will happen sometimes. Live with it.

The drops will always be like this. The less you want something, the faster it will come... Don't ask me why, thats just how it works hahaha.

Good line :D
Kind of fits the behaviour, though its still just another reason one tries to make up to somehow explain the propabilities involved. I try to get reason behind this myself sometimes :p

MF is and always will be a game of chance, kind of like gambling aswell, just that you can influence that chance by a tiny tiny little bit, by wearing some MF gear. Having a specific amoutn of MF is no guarantee for finding items!

Your guarantee for finding items are good killng speed and power combined with an amount MF that will not hinder your killng speed and power, so that you will be able to do ALOT of runs, and when i say alot i mean 1000 runs upwards and more!
Doing alot of runs in the speediest amoutn of time with some additional MF is your only guarantee for items, not 1000+MF on your char :)

You are all wrong, the Diablo item drop engine is the first artifiical intelligence concieved by mankin. Sadly this intelligence got corrupt by the constant bombartment of botters and thusly can turn "evil" at times and drop bad for even legit players. The ruststorm is it's punishment to botters/cheaters, after each sacrifice the brain will turn good for a small period of time.

It's true, FOO SHURE.

Seriously,
it's all random, even if you got 287361% Magic Find someone with 0% could find a Wind Force faster than you.

:D You certainly will do that faster, since the char with that amount of MF will kill at the speed of a slug.

Like iothers said, it's all chance. I've done an hour and a half of Mephi-runs without finding anything worth keeping (those runs where he doesn't drop uniques or set items at all, aargh!), and other times I've found 3 nice elite uniques in 20 minutes.

And I did ONE Diablo run on saturday (I was kinda busy) with a ~150% MF pally and found a +2 Arkaine's Valor. :D

Running Diablo in Hell is very viable if you have the means to kill the 3 Seal bosses fast and skip all the other monsters. Sorceresses, Paladins and i think also Amazons can make this work pretty fast.
I do Diablo runs in Hell, by simply opening all seals and just killing the bosses and then disposing off Diablo himself. Those runs are faster than any Baalruns i have done and also quite profitable.

Its all about luck and chance. I found two Facets in two consecutive runs with Meph with my 500%MF Blizz sorc and then nearly 20 runs of Rare poopy stuff and then 1 more Facet and the game after I found an Ormus. So its just luck what you get mostly. Ive also found some decent uniques such as Shako with my 0%MF Fury Druid. :xtree:

I think it's more like, "Oh, darn, I have to go to work now" and suddenly Windforces, runes and skillers are falling all over the place. :p

So true, when i MF it very rarely gives me what im lookin for.

When my friend tells me he needs an anni, and we start making games to try and get a hot IP, i do some runs so that i dont get realmed from making games over and over, and ofcourse meph just can't stop dropping the facets and all that kinda stuff.

I've also noticed, near mephisto, that group of council members with a leader or boss (whatever you like to call it) usually drops me small and grand charms, i don't know if i see this for other groups like this say in travincal, but its like my lucky little group to kill for charms :xgift: .

Wow and I thought I was special :p The council members also drop me a lot of grand charms and small charms also. Over the past 3 weeks of Mfing, they have dropped me around 6-7 GC, SC. From those I got a Elemental and a Zon Passive while the rest will go into my cubing fund. I also found a 5%All Resist/5%FHR sc from there too. :xgift:

I can't believe you guys aren't telling him the secrets to MF..... there are 3 widely known ways to get around the sucky MF runs.

1. Never switch weapons only once to your MF switch. When you switch once the AI knows you're trying to go for MF and it cuts your MF in half. Always switch 3 times (Main to MF, back to Main then back to MF) this confuses the AI and you get full MF credit for the drop.

2. Always be within weapon's reach of your target when he dies. The further you are from them when they die, the worse your drop will be. I don't know the exact amounts, but by the time you are 1 screen away, your MF is about 30% of the normal level.

3. If you are in motion (walking, running or jumping) when the monster dies, your chance to get a rune is 10x and all runes above Pul are 20x more likely to be chosen. This is how so many people get Ber/Jah/Cham/Zod/etc.

The computer is out to get you. For every MF run that it gives nothing but blues and yellows, it gets an extra 1mA of juice. It's like heroine to a computer.

By the way, that's all bunk, MF is completely random as much as we'd all wish it wasn't. I did 1 NM Andy run (cause I accidentally made a NM game) and got a SOJ. Nothing else I've ever gotten has been worth more than Mal from Hell Pindle/Meph/Andy/Baal.

I find good items without any MF gear. Usually I run Hell High Council, as they have a good chance to drop skill charms and runes. When an Occulus or Marrowwalk drop, I say, "hey cool..."

The other day I found a Witchwild String...I dropped it in a "Free" game. I have a tendancy to this as I already have most of what I am looking for.

The Zen of MFing:

- Calm yourself to the levels where playing the game is about fun and not about items.
- Clear your mind of item retrieving tasks, by focusing on a cracked sash and watching it wilt away in a flame.
- Wear the minimum amount of MF, that is only by accident on your gear, but not by choice
- Create a game focused on killing all relevant bosses and side-bosses. Focus on efficiency, killing speed and power.
- Hardest part: When something of value drops, keep your calm, pickup the item and proceed. Under no circumstances are you to get excited and exhilarated about your find.
- If you feel on the border of getting excited focus on the cracked sash in flames again.
- When you get bored of all the boss and monster killing, turn off D2 and go have a break and in case something nice dropped secretly grin into yourself.
