I haven't tried it, but if you can some +skills gear on him, it would work ok. But as suggested, a cold merc will be more usefull overall.

spirit is good for sword and shield for them
Do they get the +22 vitality bonus from the Spirits?

I was more inclined to Act 2 mercs...
- can boost AR
- can boost Damage
- can boost Defense
- can Holy freeze everything (except act bosses)

Also Act1 could be nice and provide some Range support and Elem damage (see Kuko)

Act 3 merc's can pack a hefty punch in terms of net damage. Lightning, With +skills (+8 to all skills) at level 98 they will have level 20 CB (41-48 w/22 bolts 902-1056 net damage synergized from level 35 Light) and level 35 Lighting (2-1903 damage synergized from level 20 CB Net damage, could be Alot if in maggot lair or if they're lined up well lol)

I thought so about Vita... too bad they only have "life" and no Vita.

How does the +skill stuff actually affect the mercs? I haven't tried it on an Act 3 merc, but on Act 1 (jabbing) and 2 they don't get any damage increase.

(I think' I'm gonna try putting a spirit sword on an act 3 merc or a Lore, to see if the displayed damage increases)

The display damage wont increase for any merc.. Because they use their skills randomly. The only thing that will display is the raw physical damage the merc makes. Its cool watching the merc use his sword when he gets swarmed. It only happened to me like 3 times I think my entire time playing diablo ii. Because they really arent all that good and I rarely use them. They're more of a novelty. Auras are way better. They need to make more auras for swords and shields maybe. Or they just need to give them more power, maybe more skills.

Fire casts enchant randomly..
Lightning gets thunderstorm..
Cold... idk lol

So you never really read how much damage the act3 mercs do... you have to see them in action.

If I ever make a pally with Conviction as main aura I will definetly get an act 3 merc.

Basically each act3 merc has 3 spells, right?

Cold: Glacial spike, ice blast/bolt (not sure) and Frozen Armor
Light: CB, (Chain?) Lighning, and Thunderstorm (didn't know that)
Fire (i considered them useless): Inferno, Fireball, Enchant, what??? will they enchant themselves or also you (your party?)

I must say I have never seen Act 3 mercs use Thunderstorm or Enchant and they are also not mentioned in the merc stat excel file (which does mention skill level and frequency for the other skills).

They should add those three***

No enchant or thunderstorm in 1.11

Ohh, yeah, now I get it. It wasn't clear enough on the first read through.

They should get those skillls. Yeah... I agree with that, and cold should get Frost Nova (x% [based on 'merc' level] when struck)
