merc question

From what I have read it seems that holy freeze merc is the way to go, He seems to die quite easy w/o the def boost in hell. I just found a shaft killing hephisto on my hell forge (only got a lem but i guess shaft makes up for it a bit). Would upping the shaft make things go smoother or should i invest in a def merc. my NL sorc has a def aura and he can tank hell meph fine enough for me to kill him. I can't imagine my HF merc doing that. thoughts anyone?

Slap shaftstop immediatly on him, you can upgrade later and yes it will help. Duriel's shell is also a good choice, the upgraded version as well. Get some helmet with life leech on it. Unique or just blue will help.

Mine uses "Meat Scraper" as weapon atm which has life leech on it and that just does fine. Both char and merc are lvl76 atm in Hell and can go easily hrough Act 1 without dieing. Important things on a Merc are life leech, probably some damage reduction and thats it. Also important is, that he remains close to your characters level. If the level difference is more than 5-10 levels, simply go and buy the same version to get one that is at your level.

Also look into the sorceress guide library for the "[thread=488619]Decent cheap merc item and build[/thread]" thread for further input.

yup, thanks for the help. I did throw that shaftstop on him, and see a huge difference for everything else, just having him tank meph would make runs alot smoother and less risky. (the council members have a 20% chance to mess my runs up it seems). But i did just find a good crown of thieves so LL is great, got a good insight with shaft, so no longer having problems anywhere but meph, for what I run atleast. I may just up it and see if he can handle meph.

Meph is always a problem for your mercenary, at least in Hell. LL will not help on Meph, so that is the great bummer. When running Hell Mephisto i usually just leave the merc at home, or have some full rejuvenation potions along.

What is the biggest problem with you merc? defense or resists? You can upgrade your shaft and put a Pul (def) or Um(resists) on it. (Same thing with you crown of thieves) Cleaning sockeds is really cheap, so dont worry that much.

Slight hijack: So i started NM Act 2, and was wondering if I should switch to a Holy Freeze Merc. If gear needs to be taken into account, he's using Rockfleece, Stealskull(woo, my first exceptional unique) and The Battlebranch.
