Merc Question

I was playing with a friend the other day who rushed one of my chars all the way to act 2 NM. My char was only lvl 22 but I grabbed a HF merc so that I could start leveling him up.

I fired up a normal game and my merc was dying all over the place. I checked his stats and noticed his life was only 42? By this time I was lvl 24 and went back to act 2 in normal and noticed the life of the lvl 24 mercs there were well over 150. I went back to NM to double check the act 2 mercs there and their life was only in the 90s.

This leads to my questions:

Is the HF merc that much better than the other mercs(specifically for a sorc), and is there an optimal level that my character should be before hiring one?

Well my meteorb and lightning sorcs use a HF merc well over lvl 80... HF I find very effective at staying alive because the monsters hit at such a slow rate...

I don't get your life question...

The optimal time to hire a nm merc I think is when you're over lvl 70, so the merc can reach up to his max lvl that you can possibly buy, and do nm cows with it effeciently if you're lvl 70.

I think HF is the best merc for all chars, unless you don't need the effect of cold if you're a chars such as a HF paly or a blizz sorc. Then I'd go with defiance.

Clarification on Life question:

I hired a lvl 22 HF merc from NM when my character was at lvl 22.

I returned to normal to begin to level the HF merc.

It died quickly and often and didn't seemd to be freezing anything, so I checked it's life and it was only 42.

I then went to Greiz in Act 2 at normal difficulty to see how much life the mercs he was hiring out had. My character was at level 24 and the life of the nomral mercs were well over 150. More than 4 times the current life of my lvl 22 HF merc.

I then started a nightmare game and went to act 2 to check on the mercs there. The level 24 HF mercs in NM only had life that was in the 90s.

It would appear that they nerf the life on the NM mercs for some reason. This made me wonder if there was an optimal level that a merc should be hired at. It is my understanding that they are much stronger if you level them up with your character.

So, does anyone know if there is an optimal level?

i go mine at lvl 40 something. next time dont rush, complete norm at about 40, then get ur merc and do nm baal until lvl 70.

i have my defiance at lvl 72 :p before that i use act 5 merc that seems can't protect me very well in hell. It tooks 3 days to level him from normal to lvl66 :)) patience.. its all that u need :p
