Merc itemisation prob

i recently levelled a pure blizz sorc which i was planning to have some fun with, all good so far until it comes to cold immunes.

this is why i have an act2 offensive merc but my biggest prob atm is i dont know how to gear it to not die the second a cold immune in hell shows up.
atm it got crap gear since i started from scratch and aimed to gear myself first.

summary is that i am quite poor but need advice on how to gear it somewhat decent, infinity is quite far away so anything else i can do?

armour: Shaftstop - preferably up'ed and eth. (Other options are: eth Stone or eth. Duress)
helm: Vampire Gaze - again up'ed and eth.
weapons: here things get more complicated. You want as much damage as possible and have interesting secondary mods.

Insight: in a good polearm should do the trick.
Hone Sundan: with sheals or amns (again eth.)
Arioc's Needle: (perhaps a bit expansive)

[edit]
An other idea would be to use a merc with crowd control (holy freeze should still work on cold immunes) and help out with low point second elemental skill, static field comes to mind.

Infinity won't do anything to cold immunes. They usually have too high resist.

Anyways, since you are building a cold sorc, may I suggest 1 of the simplest strategy: Run. If you wanted to kill all enemies, you should never have build a cold sorc. Since you have done so, it would be simplest to skill all cold immunes that you can.

Blizz sorcs can certainly use some backup at times, especially with the Countess and the occasional immune in the pits.

If you're on a super-tight budget, my standard fallback merc setup is Rockstopper helm, Duriel's Shell armor, and Bonehew weapon. It's really great -- put one or two amns in the Bonehew and he does fabulously. Plus, the cost of the whole lot isn't much more than the lint in the bottom of your sorc's pockets.

Re: Merc itemisation prob

i run a pure orber as my mf sorc.

And i use static/merc to kill all immunes i want dead.
But granted that he's quite geared up.

For armour i use a Gladiators bane with a IAS/something jewel.

For a weapon i use reapers toll with a amn.
Reapers toll is a realy nice merc weapon imho, decent enough damage for genaral poking, decreepify for the boss fights and phys/cold imunes and LL for surviavbility
Unless you go for a runeword the toll is the sweetest little pokestick out there and shouldnt be all to expensive, decreep/high leech does wonders for survivability.

For a helmet i guess gaze/crown of thifes/tal helm would be nice.
As my merc have 20%LL from the toll and i dont pvp i have blinged him out with a shael/shael CoA im not using.

i have NO problems with cold imunes they just take a little more time while i telebomb them.

A word of caution tho, oblivion mages/knights they have the dreaded iron maiden curse that will one hit your poor merc.
The solution to this is to tele around a bit untill he get hit by a higher level curse like decreep and then let him fight.
