Merc Help

    Hi All,

    I recently made a comeback in the form of Nightfish's Fishymancer guide. At level 81 my, might, merc has 45 (base) resistances while, with an old sorc, my defensive lvl 86 merc has 47 resist all.

    How would this work out? I can't recall whether or not I kept my defense merc at my level but I definitely leveled my might merc.

    While I am here, my lvl 86 defensive merc can't stand near anything wearing duriel's shell vamp gaze, and a bonehew. Anyone have any quick fixes?

    The selection of merc equipment might indicate that he's not using RWM.

    The OP didn't mention it explicitly, but I think the merc dies from elemental attacks. That means, his resists are too bad. I suggest to socket the helm and armor with pdiamonds. If that doesn't improve resists well enough, a Tomb Reaver socketed with Amn+something else will add resists, attack speed, MF, 1-3 sockets and reanimation of additional minions. I don't recommend Reaper's Toll for a necromancer because its ctc decrep will override the curses cast by the necro himself all the time.

    If all that isn't available, the Smoke runeword adds 50% resists.

    Mercs that have reached the same level and are hired in the same difficulty should have the same stats. But since some auras are only available on the mercs hired in Nightmare, their stats will be slightly lower.

    @krischan: diamonds in armor/helm don't improve resists, they add Attack Rating.
    You need resist jewels or -runes for that.

    Oh yes, stupid mistake. They only do so in shields. Use allres jewels or Um runes then.

    Quickest solution: Stick two Amn runes in the Bonehew. This won't make him invincible, but it will help a lot.

    @GooberGrape I threw in two Amns but it barely did anything. He can come on Pit runs but can't tank Meph for 15 seconds.

    ...I'd rather not burn an Um for ten seconds of life.

    Let me ask this another way, if I remade the char would my merc have the same resistances as the one I just made or would he still have 47 at level 86. I assume if I take my "new" merc the addirional 5 levels he will get 7.5 resist pts bringing him to 52 at lvl 86; 5 pts higher than my Sorc's merc.

    Yeah leech rocks in the Pit but unfortunately Meph is unleechable. Although you should be able to kill him in 15 seconds anyway, if you need more time try using a Kelpie Snare. What template are you using on your sorc?

    If you expect a merc at a lower level than Mephisto (or any act boss) to live for more than a few seconds in melee range without very good gear, your expectations are off. Act Bosses do a lot of damage, multiplied many times over to hirelings and minions, with a large to-hit multiplier on top of that to targets of a lower level. 50% damage reduction, overstacked resistances, none of it really matters until the merc gets to a higher level than Mephisto and even then the solutions that work below that point still work best above it: which is to say either giving the merc more life so that you have more time (note that this is basically just saying Battle Orders since most other sources of increasing life just reduce resistance/damage reduction and so don't provide a net gain) or dealing more damage to end the fight faster.

    As for a list of mitigations: first and foremost getting over 5 levels higher than Mephisto will greatly reduce Mephisto's chance to hit on the merc, but 93 is a long way from 86 so some other options: 1. use the moat trick. 2. use teleport to keep the merc out of melee range. 3. feed him potions (you'll have to combine this with #2 some percentage of the time due to elemental damage) 4. get more damage (only slightly more useful than the level thing, but the possibility of gaining items before gaining levels is certainly there) or 5. just let him stay dead. I don't like #5, #2+3 has been my preferred method when necessary in the past, but just letting Waheed basically wait by the door while you finish up your runs is an option.

    Edit: Right, you're not using RWM. Then I would definitely just leave him dead for Meph runs if you don't want to/your map doesn't let you do the moat trick. He's not providing anything particularly useful, so it's not really worth jumping through any hoops to keep him around.

    Edit#2: And, not that it's your original question but your distribution of points in the fire tree is not optimal, at least for Fire Ball. For Fire Ball you ideally want to have the hard points (that is: the points you have put in, not counting any +skills) in your synergies (Fire Bolt and Meteor) be 10 or 11 points higher than the displayed (in other words, including +skills) skill level of Fire Mastery. To put that in terms a little easier to follow: if you took those 17 points in Fire Mastery and changed them to 10 points in Fire Mastery and 8 points in Fire Bolt (meaning you'd have a displayed Fire Mastery of 17 and 28 hard points in Fire Ball synergies) your Fire Ball would do more damage than it does now with the same amount of skill points.

    Having said that, assuming you have access to respeccing your skills at all I would advise you to take some away from your fire skills and add more to your cold skills if killing Meph is your goal with the sorc. Getting Cold Mastery to at least displayed skill level of 17 should be mandatory for basically any build using a Cold skill. Taking as few as 5 skill points away from the fire side (ideally ending up with 8 hard points in Fire Mastery and 5 hard points in Fire Bolt for a displayed Mastery of 15 and 25 total points in synergies) and putting them in Cold Mastery should make Frozen Orb much, much more powerful and thus make bringing Meph down much faster.

    I vote #5. Any baby sitting done on meph runs just wastes time. 1000% extra damage is done to mercs, so the vamp gaze reduces it to 980% extra damage.

    Most agree on dead merc or using mass slow (kelpie). If you are doing fast runs, defiance might not even be turning on. Any time spent getting merc to turn on aura is time wasted.

    Oh, and merc stat tables: Basically mercs hired in normal are better than mercs hired in hell. Incrementally, but there is still a difference.

    I originally built the sorc to MF and gain some wealth. It doesn't really bother me that the merc dies; 99% of the time I run w/o him.

    My hope is to trade up and build a heavenly H'din, call me old fashioned, and I was curious if I need to lvl my merc with me or if I buy at the end how it will affect resis.

    The sorc is a pretty quick killer but I don't use the moat trick; with 1k life and max resis she is alright with a single pot.

    Thanks for the info on the shill tree, I will definitely look into that.. If I remember correctly I probably used the Meteor-orb guide in the beginners section. Her cold mast is 17 with gear.

    Your point is still true, but these numbers are not. Bosses do an additional 200% damage to mercs, and 400% damage to pets. I'm not sure off the top of my head on the mechanics of damage reduction and this bonus damage, but based on stephan's post in the "mercenary resilient against hell mephisto" link you posted above, I would guess the original damage is first adjusted by %DR and then the adjusted damage total is multiplied by 200%.

    Ah right, I forgot GoMule doesn't include the +3 from full Tal's. That changes the numbers I quoted above on the ideal fire trees numbers if you took 5 points away (most efficient for Fire Ball damage would be 6 hard points in Fire Mastery and 7 hard points in Fire Bolt, in that case) but I'd still suggest doing that if you have the option, at least for Meph running, since with your +skills that would put Mephisto at -50% Cold Resistance.

    Act bosses are merc killers. Don't expect him to survive very long if the act boss concentrates on him. If you want your merc to survive Meph (and Andariel), give him maximum poison resistance with enhanced max res, like from Venom Ward or Andariel's Visage. Besides, you cannot leech from hell Meph and Diablo and just a small bit from Baal.

    For a necro, mercs are mainly used as walking auras and for the first kills of regular minsters, so you can blow up the others with corpse explosion. When used against act bosses, he's often meant to slow down the boss through a Kelpie Snare... at least that's the weapon I'm giving him for that purpose.

    Thanks for the correction. I blame Arreat Summit. It still states mercs take 10x damage vs bosses. And when they get 2 shot with 1700 life you start to believe it.

    Someone already did. The merc stats link thefranklin posted in his first post shows exactly what you're asking for and matches the numbers you posted.

    Edit: Actually I didn't look over the guide as closely as I should have, as it does not include the stats for Act 2 mercs available in Normal that were hired in Hell (which yours was,) which I had assumed it did. However, as others above have said, mercs hired in Hell have lower stats than those hired in earlier difficulties and 47 resist all is exactly the expected amount of a Defensive Act 2 merc hired in Hell. If you were to go back and hire him again in Normal he'd have 53 resist all, just as the guide thefranklin linked indicates.

    Also, glad to see these forums are still active. Is that the case on trading as well? I looked over the trading forum and it looked less busy.

    Unless you're playing a much earlier patch (before 1.11) mercenaries will be from 1-5 levels lower than your character, so with a little luck or saving and exiting to respawn the list you should be able to get a merc you want at 1 level lower than your character.

    There's not a ton of trading going on (nothing compared to how it used to be, at least) but there's still some activity over there.
