    Merc for Hammerdin?

I'm making a hammerdin which is level 49 right now on act2 nightmare and am wondering what type of merc he should use. A might merc with conc will do HUGE damage, but a holy freeze merc seems tempting too - especially since I play hardcore. My hammerdin does have a host of good items (including HotO Flail) and I plan to make him my all-purpose magic finder. I need a hammerdin that is safe but can kill a lot. My merc would be nice to act as a tank as well. Anyways, please vote and give some advice.

Since you are playing hardcore, I sugest against my will to go for a Holy Freeze, as you will get a lot less hits and therefore, be safer. Also, if you have to run away, again, safer. Holy Freeze.

Thanks, I'm also leaning towards a holy freeze merc as well. I'll wait to see what others have to say, but I'll probably get a HF merc.

The only problem I have with HF is that it shatters corpses that could be used for redemption, but that's not such a big deal.

    Go for HF :)

I would say Holy Freeze is ideal for a hardcore hammerdin. It slows down the monsters and allows the hammerdin to better position. This allows for a player to have a better defense and offense strategy to keep the hammerdin alive until he beats Hell. That is my two cents on the subject.

My HC Hammerdin will be hiring a HF merc when he gets to Act2 NM (currently start of A1 NM). Best choice for any hammerdin IMO - even more so for HC.

my hammerdin has a defiance merc, and i really wish he were HF instead... might go get a new one and try to level him up. HF helps a lot because the monsters spend more time in the path of your hammers, meaning they die faster and hit you less!

HF is awesome. I considered using Defiance merc too, but im really happy I didn't choose it. Basically HF merc will half the damage you take, few thousand more defense will not do that. HF will also increase your damage output greatly by slowing monsters and therefor making them easier to hit with BH

Definitely go for holy freeze...Slows the monsters down quite a bit and keeps you on the safe side especially for hc.

    DC used a Cheddardin?

I will never, ever let this go. Ever.

But if you still need help DC (chuckle), I would say a Holy Freeze merc, for a bit of crowd control (chuckle) in areas like Bloody Foothills, WSK, where you find find those pesky little guys that never stand still.

    *busts out laughing*

EDIT: I am not sure how the threadcromancer himself did it, but I know a way to, zenith. Of course, I don't think Cat or Hrus would like me posting that here, or we would start seeing a lot of them. However, I did see a really old one from Durf about...Well, I better not say. It was really n00bish though

Well done resurrecting a thread from 2004. I have (had?) a 98 hammerdin, so I have no problem with cheese (gouda is my favourite).

My hammeradin has a might merc, which uses an eth reaper's, and he's doing a great job, ctc decerp will slow down any monsters daring to rush us. I won't bother with holy freeze as the freeze causes monsters to shatter which makes it unfriendly with redemption.

@Vgamenut: nice move rescurrecting this thread from the deepest of hell.

@zenithsmith: I guess that actually means that the search function is doing a good job.

Only lvl 49 hammerdin? Pshaw. Come back when he's in his nineties and we can talk.

And yes, cheesy HC hammerdins turn me off more so than most book violence.
