Meleemancer?

Has anyone made a dedicated melee necromancer in the current patch? I was thinking that if a melee sorcy can be viable, then a melee necro should be possible too.

As I see it, advantages include the following:
  • Life Tap: Obvious benefits to any melee character
  • Amp Damage: Likewise
  • Decrepify/Weaken: Renders melee and archer mobs much less deadly
  • Terror/Confuse/Attract: Crowd control curses to keep our hero from being swarmed
  • Skeletons/Golems: Distractions, and possibly useful sources of damage
  • Bone Armor: Duh! :)
Disadvantages include:
  • Low life
  • Low damage dealing
  • Few ways of dealing damage to multiple targets
I figure it's possible to complete Hell with this character, given enough luck and patience, but having never tried a meleemancer, odds are I'm missing some pieces of the puzzle. Has anyone made a successful attempt at this? Can anyone offer some insights I might have missed?

I know it's no uber-character, but I'm more a fan of fun builds than pure power builds. Still, I don't want to play a doomed build, either.
