Mega Newbie Question - Assigning Skills to Left and Right Skill Button things

I'm a paladin just started D2 after I borrowed it from someone. My Might Aura is assigned to the right skill shortcut thing. I liked using my left click to attack things with normal or other combat skills. How do I switch the aura skill so it is on the left click shortcut side. I keep running past things using left to attack. How do I switch the aure so it doesn't mess me up? SORRY if this on some FAQ or in the readme with the game. I looked on google for awhile but no luck, most likely it is too stupid for others to afk. :(

Yes, it is true that auras can only go on the right side. The left is for combat-related abilities for the most part.

Just remember withthe F1-F8 keys, you can assign them to both the left and the right side, something I did not learn for quite a while. This cna help you assign skills to make combat easier, or picking up items easier.

Also remember that you can reassign hotkeys from F1-F8 to other keys, which makes it much easier (you don't have to move your whole hand to change skills).

For example, I use E,R,T,Y, A,S,D,F,G,H for skills (and some people even use Z,X,C,V,B, and more). Escape -> Options -> Configure Controls -> scroll down to the skills, click on the F1 or whatever (under Key/Button One or Key/Button Two) and then press the key you want assigned. You can assign up to 16 skills to various keys, in fact. Just remember to hit Accept at the bottom-right after re-assigning them.

Just remember that some keys are already assigned to things, so if you change that key to a skill, the original thing it was assigned to won't work with that key. That's why I don't assign Q or W as skills; I leave them for the quest menu and switching weapons. Although if you don't use those keys and instead use the little buttons on the HUD, go ahead and reassign them, too. Or you can reassign them to different keys (on a character that doesn't switch weapons much, I use W for a skill and stick switch weapons over on something like L).

Oh, and while auras can only go on the right, some other skills have slightly different properties depending on which side you assign them to. For example, the Barbarian's frenzy skill. If you put it on the left mouse button, you have to actually click on a monster to attack it. If you put it on the right mouse button, you can hold down the right mouse button and run your barbarian into a monster and he will start attacking without you having to actually click on the monster. This is especially helpful because if frenzy is charged up and you're running really fast, it can be difficult to click exactly on a monster.

You can have even more than this... if you go to options and configure your controls you can use up too 12 hot keys... as a pally, you might need it to use all your auras.. though I find it to be simply confusing.

Use Shift-click with the attack skills during times when you feel it´s important to stand in place.

Yes, that´s why Q, T, C, O and I are "sacred" when I assign hotkeys (Quest log, skill tree screen, character screen, merc screen and inventory). I have allowed myself to use the easy-to-reach S key for a skill (originally, it´s used to open the 'assign-hotkey' meny). I have also moved the weapon switch from W to the § button (just above Alt on my keyboard) since that key is much easier to hit quickly. In addition, I always use space to close menus. Very handy when you want to do some quick gambling for specific item types.

16, actually (which is still not enough for some of my assassins and necros!).

AHHHH! I never ever assign a hotkey to the skill tree after once panicking, tapping all possible keys + left&right clicking madly - only to notice later that I had not only died but also succeeded in putting some stored skill points to wrong places. Now it is strictly the mini-panel (or the plus sign, of course).

BTW, I also use K for character and L for the quest log. They fall in nicely with I for the inventory and O for the merc.

Personally I use Z, X, C, V , B, N, M, <

I change all my party screens, character screen , quest etc to the F1, F2, F3 etc, as I find I dont use em as much.

personal preference I guess

The first thing I always do with every character is make sure T is the 16th hotkey and assign it to Town Portal. It helps a lot.

T is usually reserved for the skill tree, so I change that to S for skills and make the quickskill menu D because it's right next to it.

everyone has their prefered keys for skills. Mine? a is always town portal. for my summoners, s, d, and f are used. For meleers, d and f are used for primary and secondary left click attacks, while z is used for escape skills (ie vigor, leap attack)
