Media Converter

Does anyone know of a good video converter that doesn't degrade the quality? I need to convert a .avi into .mp4

vurtualdub is free
doesnt convert mpg2, or drm infected files

what codec does the avi use, does it use drm?

Pretty sure it's DivX.

Well I'm using mediacoder right now and it kinda bloats the files. I'll give your program a try.

be sure to tweak the audio and video output codecs, it might be defaulting to pcm (uncompressed)
set it to mp3 128k/s for good quality compressed sound

it also uses all of windows installed codecs
if its not an option, your still using windows stock mp3 codec, it can only compress upto 64k/s

to change it
control panel -> system -> hardware tab -> device manager -> [+] sound, video and game controllers -> audio codecs -> properties tab
select the mpeg layer 3 codec, and remove

then install this codec

it can compress upto mp3 upto 320k/s, and is alot faster at compressing and decompressing than microsofts stock one

VirtualDub only makes AVI files, not MP4.

With a little luck you can just remux the video with mp4box, although you might need to re-encode the audio to AAC depending on your purposes.

avi is a generic form for a video file
can uncompressed (rgb) or compressed with divx, mpeg2, mpeg4, h.26x, wmv ext.. interleaved with any audio format, wav, pcm, mp3, ac3, wma ect..

Yes, but mp4 is a different container format. If he wants convert to avi to mp4 VirtualDub does no good, since it can only output avi.

I use handbrake, I gave the free trial of badaboom a try but it wasn't that much faster to justify paying for it after the free trial was up.
