MDR (magic dmg reduced), Can anyone explain the mechanics?

Of course it's a nice mod to have against Nec's and Hdin's, but can someone explain how it works? How much is enough? I originally thought that if you had, for example, a Pstring of ears and Pgladbane for a total of 35MDR it would reduce blessed hammer dmg before it's synergized and/or boosted by conc. A friend was telling me that this not true, and it is a complicated formula  . Any thoughts?

I don't believe the reduction gets applied before synergies. To the best of my knowledge, your 35 MDR would apply after their total damage is calculated and then reduced by the PvP penalty. So if a bone spear does 5k damage, it would be 833 after penalty and then reduced by 35 from MDR to be 798.

Other methods for reducing magic damage would be magic absorb. Crafted safety shields can give up to 10% absorb and the oath runeword gives 15 direct magic absorb. According to the Arreat Summit website, the order for damage reduction is:

Energy Shield
Bone Armor and Cyclone Armor
DR and MDR (damage reduction and magic damage reduction)
Resistances
% Absorb
Direct Absorb

Using the same 5k spear example, the 798 damage would be absorbed by the crafted shield before the oath. The 10% of 798 or 80 (rounded for simplicity) would be used to heal you. If you survive the spell, then the effective damage would be 718. Finally, the 15 absorb from the oath will make the damage 703. If you had no magic reduction/absorb and want to receive the same damage, then necro would need a 4.2k spear instead of 5k spear.

As you can see, its hard to prevent magic damage very effectively. And notice that you had to sacrifice a lot to get this reduction. Your weapon, armor, belt, and shield slots are taken.

My advice is not to have magic reduction as a priority in your gear as they help very little.

MDR is only helpful for high level es sorcs. If they have 95% es, only 5% pvp damage goes to their life, so they can effectively negate that small amount of damage easily.

I stand corrected. It's resistance, not absorb for crafted shields.

I still don't think its worth it to sacrifice other shields for this damage prevention.
