Total Blocking = (Blocking * (Dexterity - 15)) / (Character Level * 2)

total blocking means the final chance to block, as shown when you scroll over 'defense' in your character screen.

blocking means the sum of the blocking percentage of your shield (which, if it displays 75% on the shield, may in fact exceed 75% -- you'd have to check the item's actual block chance % on the arreat summit ) and any other added blocking bonuses. these out-of-shield bonuses can be found on some crafted amulets (the safety group) or on some weird items like guardian angel. i think guardian angel is the only item that can do this but i'm not exactly sure.

or was it the way the equation was shown that confused you? if so, just tell me and i can do my best to explain that too.

just wnna make sure so lets say a lvl 85 barb wid ss shud only have 72 dex?

No, you'd need 193 dex at 85.

75 = (72 * (x - 15)) / (85 * 2)

x = 193
