    Matriarch Maelon, 1-handed Meleezon

After reading this old daggerzon Mat thread, I decide someone had to go where the author wouldn't: a 1-handed meleezon that didn't chicken out at the thought of a slow block speed and opt for daggers. Yep, I have built, and now mat'ed, a 1-handed sword wielding meleezon, super-slow block speed and all. What convinced me to try this mad project was discovering, after a bit of research, that Amazons swing faster than any other character (Blizzard are obviously a very humerous bunch). Also the availability of a certain piece of armour that boasts 30% Faster Block Rate. And finally, after a bit more research, discovering that with a Shael'ed fast blocking shield and said piece of armour, I could block at the blinding speed of 8(!) frames, a speed to make any Paladin wake in a cold sweat. The thing is, though, that the Zon's good old dodging skills also work at 8 frames, and I figured if I could live with an 8-frame Dodge, I could bloody well live with an 8-frame block as well.

So I set about trying to figure a way to make this build work. Enter Thomh, who chucked in low damage roll Grief PB as a freebie(!) in a recent trade (many, many thanks). I knew I had to swing as fast as possible (hit them before they could hit me), and a Phase Blade with an extra 34% IAS goes a long way to achieving such a goal. I only needed another 40IAS (38 actually) to reach 7fpa, crucially 1 frame faster than the dodge and block speeds, meaning I could interrupt an enemy attack before they interrupted mine. Sounds nice in theory, but surprisingly worked pretty well in practice, unless I was mobbed.

Which brings me to the great advantage of the Amazon: her two recastable tanks that, along with the moron, can occupy enemies while she takes them down one by one. And this was pretty much my strategy, especially with melee monsters. Against ranged monsters, I generally tried to use the Decoy to draw fire away from myself, so I could again whittle the nasties down one at a time. Helping out was the ever useful Slow Missiles skill.

I played through Normal and Nightmare on p8, before switching to p1 for Hell. In Hell, I ran acts 1 and 2 at p1 (speed), acts 3 and 4 at p8 (experience), act 5 at p1 up until the Ancients (speed), then from the Ancients to Baal at p8 (because I could). I ran Normal Baal until level 59 (to equip the Grief), Nightmare Baal until level 77 (to equip Kira's, was also originally intending to use Drac's, but changed my mind), and the Pits until level 85. Prior to equipping the Grief PB, I used a Butcher's Pupil, and before that I honestly cannot recall.

Overall, I was surprised just how viable this character was. At p1 in Hell she 1 or 2 hit kills most normal monsters. That I was able to play her at p8 at all surprised me. Such is the power of even a rubbish Grief. She was incredibly durable (90% Resist all, Fire and Lightning Absorb, 50% DR, 75% block, ~50% D/A/E), which was by deliberate design. The other major design choice was to get as many additional points to Passive and Magic skills as possible. This involved 6 skillers and a pair of +3 gloves. This was partly for style points (why play a passive zon if you're not going to boost these skills), and partly because I wanted to have a very high level Inner Sight, Decoy, Valk, Penetrate, and Critical Strike (all critical to my build), while at the same time achieving ~50% D/A/E with only 1 hard point in each.

Apart from the slowmo bloack and cast (neither of which bothered me at all), the only downside to the final character was that I couldn't find any room for CB or OW. I could have if I had abandoned my stylepoints quest, used charms for resists, and kept the Guillame's and Gore Rider that I wore until the end of Nightmare, but since when does any self-respecting D2 single player abandon style points for anything? :smug:

    Anyway, enough wall-of-text, here's the nitty-gritty:

Many thanks to the various people who traded/gifted me some of the items worn by this character. You now know what I was up to. I love making weird and wonderful off-the-wall characters, and that generally requires some specialist gear.

I can now get back to my 'Ice' Sept, which should please omg. ;)

    Re: Matriarch Maelon, 1-handed Meleezon

    Awezome character you have there!

This has always been a dream character for me. I guess I should do what you did and get over my fear of slow blockrate. With normal blockrate or say 2 frame dodge skills, this would definitely be the killingmachine of choice.

Just out of curiousity, if Blizzard would make up a new runeword that had +1 holy shield in it, what would be the blocking speed for an amazon with holy shield active? Any ideas?

I actually tried this out on bnet a few years back. At that time I used a 4x shael monarch wich gives 80% fbr = 8 frames. With a JMOD or even a 3 socket shield of deflection together with Guardian Angel, a 7 frame block (120% fbr) should be possible.

While I was playing that character the only real problem I had was the slow block. So I'm thinking 35% less damage taken and other insignificant stuff ( :) ) on the Stormshield isn't realy necessary.

Whoah, this brings back memories. Glad to be an inspiration.

Good job going with the sword.

e: this almost makes me want to play

    Re: Matriarch Maelon, 1-handed Meleezon

I actually checked to see if anyone had done this before, and all I could find were Daggerzons and 2H Meleezons. Your comment that you started out as a 1H Meleezon but found the slow block too much of a problem, so you switched to using a dagger tickled my stubborn streak. Thanks for the inspiration! :)

I should point out that this is my first melee Pat/Mat/Guardian. My others have been bow wielders, casters, and a summoner (my only Guardian). I'm pretty chuffed with this character, because I don't think I've put more effort into any of my previous characters in terms of planning (and trading), and also because on first glance it seems like a stupid idea. It probably would be, if not for that wonderful piece of kit, Guardian Angel. But that's the great thing about this community, we see stupid ideas, and we turn them into good ideas.

    One word: ROFL.

This character is epic in every way:thumbup:

I just have no idea how you did large parts of hell on /p8, using normal attack. That's a lot of decoying, valking, and swinging ('grief' or not). Yikes. Props on having the patience to take this character all the way to level **!

One thing I noticed about the old mat thread, all the posters have been active fairly recently--or they're banned.

    Re: Matriarch Maelon, 1-handed Meleezon

Thanks humbuggerer (love the nick, by the way ;)). I myself was surprised that the character was viable at all on p8, as I thought I might struggle even with p1. I guess it is a testament to the power of Grief, and high levels of DS and CS, along with the handy Decrep from the moron's Reaper's Toll. One minor benefit is that using normal attack, mana burn nasties are barely a nuisance at all (also given how cheap Decoy is to cast at high levels).

If only Blizzard had been able to forsee that crazy people would want to play Bowbarians and Melee-sorcs, -zons, and -mancers. I mean, how crazy is it that Amplify Damage, of massive use to any character that deals physical damage, belongs to the class least equipped to deal it? And really, how much of a stretch would it have been to make some of the Barbarian and Paladin combat skills work with ranged weapons? I know they are primarily melee characters, but if the game is going to allow them to wield bows at all, it could have given some scope for a skill or two to work with bows. As for the Amazon's absurd block rate coupled with the fastest natural swing rate, obviously someone at Blizzard was either drunk, or they have quite a nasty sense of humour.

Congrats on a nice character. :) Definitely an interesting choice for your first melee to kill Hell Baal as well.

Seriously though, points in vitality?!?!?! *hide*

    Nice character!

I plan on making my own meleezon at some point, though she'll swing a Passion Berseker Ace. Maybe I'll go with base vita just to sate Nagisa. :scratchchin:

I think Nagisa will enjoy reading about my base vita hunter(w/ some wind) druid once he's patted. :)

    This sounds oddly familiar.

Seriously though. You have to admit that melee zons are one of the most fun builds to play. And sickeningly invulnerable to boot.

Sorry Dash, but you suck, hax runewords and all. My character didn't die even once. ;) And I forgot about your little sept. It's obviously listed separately in the Mat/Pat thread.

You're dead right about the fun factor and invulnerability though.

Honestly? If I were to redo that zon, I would use a 2-h Oath Champ Axe. Two hands means no worrying about block speed. As well as crazy awesome looking death-zon. And let's see your char survive a boss pack of dolls while cursed. :p

    Congratulations on the Matriarch.

It seems you went to alot of effort though to make the shield work, where a two hander would have served you better? Or even a low blocking shield - Spike Thorn (for the DR) for example?

    Re: Matriarch Maelon, 1-handed Meleezon

Well, I've wondered about this a little myself, and I think it's partly because of "lore" ie, a WW-using necro would just be weird, and partly because of balance. Actually, I think if you want to make a melee sorc, it's ok that you have to suffer for it a little, since it's kind of aberrant. But there are some things that are kind of frustrating, like not being able to use 'grief' and poison dagger together (at least not that I know of). Ultimately, the onus is on the player to come up with a workaround to make an unusual or unnatural build viable. And that's ok with me.

    Re: Matriarch Maelon, 1-handed Meleezon

Yes, I could have made a 2-hander or used Fleshripper (slow block doesn't apply with daggers). Those are the obvious solutions, and what others have done. The entire point of me making this character, however, was to take the slow-blocking route and attempt to make it viable, which Maelon most definitely was.

A blocking, non-daggerzon is worth like 17 stylepoints in my book. Grats!

I think I've mentioned this to you before, but Normal Baal to 59 is just insane.

If I were you, I'd probably stick to 'Fortitude', but I can see why you choose GA. She can probably stand for a minute in the middle of a Frenzytaur pack and take almost no damage.

    Well done.

Um, I don't have Fortitude. I've never found a Lo, and I've missed out in the various giveaways that have offered a Fort (not that I'm complaining, seeing as I scored that lovely 'Ice' bow instead ;)).

And Normal Baal to 59 is nowhere near as insane as Normal Baal to 65, which I did with my Ice Bowbarian. ;)

Nicely done! It's great to see such planning out to overcome what seem like quite serious limitations.

A "rubbish" Grief is still quite an incredibly nice weapon!

I remember playing a melee zon in Classic with Twitchthroe to help with the blocking percentage but still having slow blocking. I don't remember her getting too far!

Thanks mate. It felt really rewarding to finish this character, because of all the planning effort put into her.

And now for my next trick: a Raven Druid. ;)
