    Matriarch Heskla: Windforce strafer

After being the lucky recipient of a Windforce from Heskla's giveaway, it was time to put it to good use.

I had a similar character to this, way back, but without the Windforce. She used a WWS. The WWS is a nice bow, but I now understand why WF is considered so good... it just mows things down! Of course, the rest of my gear is a lot better now than back then, and that most definitely helps. I used the WWS on this character as a switch weapon for PIs when the Merc decided to croak - lvl 20 MA plus Amp Damage works pretty well.

A Fortitude would have been great here, but I'm still too poor, so after some deliberation I decided to settle for a Treachery. It was better than I expected. The Venom is a nice damage boost and the IAS meant I could be a little more flexible with the rest of my gear. Very good for its cost in runes.

    I went for 89% IAS, 9/3 Strafe.

This was a fun character, everything was easy until after rescuing Anya, then I had to slow down a little and use Decoy more often. The Ancients were rough and I ended up using a Fleshripper plus Stormshield, with Kelpie on the merc to finally take them down (after about 6 attempts). The Baal fight was quite epic - I'd lost the Merc in WSK 1 and had no gold to res him, so the rest was done with just the Valk. The Throne Room was a piece of cake, at /p1. I can see Heskla running it a few times perhaps, but skipping Baal as he just takes way too long to die.

No drops worth mentioning, and yet another disappointing Hellforge:

    Nef / Shael / Ko

    Ho hum.

Straightforward play: cast Valk, Strafe on left, Decoy on right.

I still haven't put anything in the WF socket - I don't have a decent jewel, so there's some room for improvement there.

Playing this character reminded me how much I enjoy Zons. I'm thinking about a FA/Immo Mav's Zon and perhaps a new witchyzon - similar to the above, but I can squeeze out some more dex as there's no need for Highlords (Cat's eye instead) and the Str requirements would be lower.

Once I get my grubby little paws on a Lo I plan on re-equipping around a Fortitude, possibly with Mav's helm, and finding out how much of a difference Fortitude really makes to physical damage characters.

Nicely done, especially the way you took out those pesky Ancients. Maybe you could make a Pit runner out of her? Good luck with your future characters, as well as with your quest for that 'Fortitude'!

Yay, another WFzon, they are fun, congrats on the mat

    Why points in strength though?

They make good/fun Pit runners, have fun and may all your drops be gold/green/red

    Why strafe on left click?

    Re: Matriarch Heskla: Windforce strafer

    Thanks Nagisa.

She actually found a couple of decent socketables, including a 3os Archon, 3os Mage plate, 5os Phaseblade and a couple of white Monarchs and PBs. I was thinking of running pits for socketables with her, as she's certainly not cut out for carrying a lot of MF.

Using the Fleshripper and Stormshield for those 5 minutes has also got me thinking about a Daggerzon too, although I'm not sure I've got the patience

After recent trades I think I'm up to about a Vex if I cube, so 25% of the way there.... /sigh.

Lionheart, I put enough in Str to equip the WF with just the Travs (edit: and one charm from the looks of it). Some wasted points there for sure... but I hate messing around with equipment to be able to wear things. I don't bother juggling charms, but maybe I should think about it in the future - another 10 points of dex would add a bit of damage.

As far as strafe on the left - I've always done it that way and am used to it. It means no hotkeying at all, but it's slightly tricky if you mis-click and end up attacking instead of running, with that agonizing wait while the strafe animation does its thing. Maybe I'll try it on the right and see if I prefer it.

Lots of credits for honoring Heskla with doing a mat with his name!

Bassen and me discussed personalizing the bow during the giveaway. This was, in my eyes, a very generous giveaway so I thought it only fair and proper that the Windforce bear Heskla's name permanently.

So, I needed to get a character to complete the Anya quest to personalize the bow (I play on a Mac so no Atma tricks for me) and I figured I might as well just carry on once I'd got that far and Mat Heskla instead of my exisitng strafer who was sitting at level 15!

Excellent Aconite. Nice work there. An interesting gear setup. Would never occur to me using Treachery. I'd just go lame with some unique armor.

A bow amazon is actually going to be my next character as soon as I finish this zealot hybrid. I never actually played those ladies. As a class, I was never much drawn into it. I'll certainly get some inspiration from your work here.

    Nice mat you got there!

How much did you feel you got out of Treachery? Did Fade proc a lot? I haven't tested out a Treach on a WF-zon before, but I will in the future (I used a Lionheart runeword on her).

Good to see a Tal's helm being used on a WF zon! It's a great helm, just too bad it looks so damn ugly! And I always use the LoH - Razortail - WT combo myself, it's a great choice for this kind of character.

Agreed with Strafe on left, I'm use to this too. I do prefer a few more points in MS as well, and have MS on right click.

    Re: Matriarch Heskla: Windforce strafer

    Thanks DZJB.

The Fade on Treachery didn't proc very often. When it did it was a nice addition, but resists are not exactly critical for a strafer. I had no problems with Souls in Act 3 or in the WSK - distance, damage and 3 tanks means not too many lightning bolts coming my way. The main joy of Treachery is the Venom I think - it adds some decent damage over 2 seconds, and it always procs quickly. Also the IAS is great. I did consider Lionheart too, but wanted to wear that Tal's with the jewel - I already had it from a previous WWS strafer - and Treachery sorts out any IAS issues in one shot.

Never tried Multi, to be honest. Maybe I'll drop a few points in there as she levels (Running Pits on /p8 is clocking up the xp!).

I found a +14 max dmg jewel in LK last night. Was thinking of putting it in the WF in the meantime. Anyone care to comment on that idea?

    Re: Matriarch Heskla: Windforce strafer

If damage related, I'd probably prefer to reduce the very high damage range on these bows. As such, for me at least, I'd value more a +min damage. This translates to an effective damage increase equal to the value on the jewel. Whereas a +max damage is bound to be constrained by the random range of the base damage. And since you just increased this range, you further lowered your odds of a high base damage result.

But, I'd probably just ignore that altogether and prefer instead for a Ruby Jewel to show up (31-40% damage increase). The good thing is that you can try and roll these ones yourself with a ilvl 66 or better magic jewel. Jewels are much easier to roll for specific mods than charms, due to the less possible mods involved. A Ruby Jewel of Carnage is a thing to behold. And will cost you... I dunno... 600, 1,000 pgems?

I'd love to hear other people opinions though.

EDIT: The sad thing is the Ruby mod has the highest ilevel requirement on jewels. So, when cubing with a ilevel >=66 jewel, you will be rolling for all possible mods.

Congratulations on your Strafer! Did you have any trouble with the evasion skills and strafe?

    Re: Matriarch Heskla: Windforce strafer

I did read about that prior to building her, and wondered whether it would be an issue. For me, it wasn't. I tended to not be attacked much as the merc, valk and decoy took most of the attention away from me. When I was under attack by melee, I'd be running away, not shooting. And missiles tended to go for the decoy, not me.

Those skills probably saved me a few times though, given how low my life was.

All in all I don't think sacrificing the Valk is worth skipping them.

    Re: Matriarch Heskla: Windforce strafer

If you're comfortable with your resists, life, fhr, ias, etc., etc. then it's not a bad idea.
It's a quite comon jewel, so no big loss if you decide to put something better in it later.

    Also, Congratulations. WF-zons rock!

I'm sorry but that's just plain wrong.

Long story short - Average damage is what counts. Average damage increases by half the value of any +max and/or +min damage jewels that's added.

If you have a very tight damage range there's some measure of reason to add +min damage over +max damage. If you can push the minimum damage up to equal the max damage, then any further minimum damage added, is added directly to the average.

Look up DnT's min damage avenger for a better explanation of that.

The average damage is indeed increased by half of the value of the min or max modifier. But the effective damage on every roll of the die is increased by the full amount of the +min modifier, up to the max range minus +min modifier.

EDIT: What I'm trying to establish here is that on every roll it's probably more advantageous to increase min damage and tighten the range. Within the new range of possible numbers, one just increased the odds of drawing from the higher end.

    Great character/write up, Aconite!

Very inspiring work. I'll get to work building a WF-zon after I pat my fanatic zealot. It's gonna be good times using WF with Fortitude

Did you consider using anything else instead of Tal's crest? Is the leech that important? Harly and Valkyrie wing seems better/fine to me.

Well, no real need for +skills on a strafer, imo.

I needed some leech, and had that Helm lying around with the jewel already socketed, so it made sense to me.

I guess I could have Amn'd the WF though...

I think every roll should try to one-hit-kill a monster. Factoring in DS and CS from skills and Highlord's, your want to push max damage as far as possible before worrying about min. So after you meet the minimum safety features like resists and life, you make sure you hit as often as feasibly possible (IAS, AR), then you want to make sure your average hits over time do optimal damage (CS + DS + CB factored into your average damage over time).

If you do 50-300 per shot with the Windforce, adding +11 min damage isn't as good as adding +11 max damage, because you'll miss out on some one hit kills while gaining more consistent 2 hit kills. Additionally, a +15 Jewel of Carnage is a lot more replaceable than +min dmg jewels.

Tesladins are a great example of this--go for the damage ceiling and hit very fast.

DnT's write up is very good for the min damage aspect--it inspired me to craft a 1.07 Phase Blade for a minimum damage Paladin give a good home to some great jewels that just aren't right for other builds (like fast attackers). Fireclaw bears are another good example of min damage builds--you get your average damage up to where you one-hit-kill most monsters thanks to the tight damage range inherent in the skill.

    Interesting reading galtwish. Thanks.

I'm still not entirely convinced yet. I guess it's just a matter of strategy. Personally I prefer to tighten the range following a similar principle to damage application on a multi-opponent fight (kill one by one, instead of distributing damage through them all -- or, concentrate, do not distribute). But I'm glad you realize the importance of understanding the numbers in the actual context they are being used, instead of a subjective average.
