Matriarch Constance - Poison em' till they drop

It seems like just a few days ago that I wrote one of these. Oh, right...it was.

This is a very special matriarch for me, because I've loved javazons since the days of 1.01. Indeed, my very first character was a LF/PJ amazon who never quite made it through Hell. Since then; I've studied the build in 1.09 and 1.10, licked my wounds, improved my gear, and my playing skills have more than doubled. And now, the time is right. I have struck back at the forces of evil.

    ANALYSIS

First of all, let me express how much I love poison. LF and CS certainly are impressive, but there's something about seeing a green enemy advance on you with hatred in their eyes, only to fall over dead at your feet. Plague Javelin saved me; not just from Lightning Immunes, but from most bosses. I tried CS on Hell Duriel, but he just killed the merc and came at me. So I threw a Plague Javelin at him and ran around in circles until he died. Same with Hell Diablo, except it took longer and I ran back and forth instead of in circles. Finally, the Ancients. Two of them spawned Lightning immune, and the merc died instantly. I did not even flinch. I LFed the bunch until the non-LI one bit it, then continually threw plague javelins and ran until one more died. The last one was fairly low on health, so I just tanked him with tried and true Jab.

I also want to say that I believe this combo to be simply terrific. The mercenary dealt cold damage (courtesy of the Holy Freeze aura) and fire damage (Enchant on Obedience) and a decent amount of physical damage. I myself dealt lightning (LF and CS) and poison damage AND a good enough amount of physical damage, thanks to a level 18 Jab. In short, we were capable of dealing with every monster in the game.

I had NO deaths. None. In fact, I only experienced a handful of NDEs, and they all came tonight. The most memorable was in the Frozen River, attempting to save Anya. Oh, the Gloams...Lightning and Poison immune. In most cases, I was able to draw their fire by running in tight circles and relying on maxed block until the mercenary could close in and take them down. But near the end, a particularly vicious pack killed him. I took a deep breath, and tried to isolate a few. I killed several with Jab, but then a boss pack joined the fun. At this point I employed a new tactic: I ran. I beat feet all the way to the exit. A rouge Gloam followed me all the way, and tossed several lightning bolts my direction. I sucked down my last Full Rejuv and ducked out just in time. *phew!*

Finally, I just want to mention Razan. I don't dare equip Obedience without IAS, and since I was unwilling to make a third Treachery, I used the often-overlooked Black Hades. Socketed with three IAS/Resist jewels, it is a lovely armor. I'm sorry I never considered it before.

When you can equip Titan's and seven Harpoonist charms at level 42, stuff dies fast. Very fast. And what started at level 42 never slowed down much. I positively love this build.

Special thanks go to Neksja (who traded me the gloves) and Ugla (whom I consider to be a master of amazons) for his insightful posts. And thank all of you for reading this special, albeit long-winded post about Matriarch Constance.

What, no damage numbers? :angry:Must be way better than my untwinked zon, who "only" had +7 to jav skills. Wonder why you had trouble with CS, it absolutely murders act bosses, Diablo drops in something like 10 seconds.

PJ is a lovely skill :azn: I have happy memories of one-hit killing an entire boss pack in act 4 hell with a single javelin.

Re: Matriarch Constance - Poison em' till they drop

    Hi Cygnus!

First of all, allow me to apologize for not mentioning you; as I also consider you to be a javazon expert. I even believe it was you whose logic convinced me that a 1 in D/A/E was sufficient.

    Okay, the damage numbers:

    Jab: 411 - 813
    Charged Strike: 1 - 2425
    Lightning Fury: 1 - 1720
    Plague Javelin: 42,738 - 42,983

I guess I didn't really have "trouble" with CS, it was just cowardice. For one, when I used it against Hell Duriel, I wasn't connecting very often because I was slowed by his freeze aura. Rather than deal with that, I just poisoned him and ran around until he died. I didn't even attempt to use CS on Diablo, assuming his pink lightning would kill me. Again, I just poisoned him and waited for it to kill him. But CS is a mighty, mighty skill.

My favorite with PJ was in the Act I catacombs. I would cast Decoy inside a room to distract them, then use a PJ. Next I would just wait outside the door and listen to them die. It was beautiful.

Congrats! I've always meant to make a PoiZon or whatever you want to call it...

    Anyway, a couple of Q's:
    1) Why 20 in Critical Strike?
    2) Would your damage have been better with Trang's gloves? Did you try them? (you already had a crazy amount of +skills...)

I assume these were issues you discussed with the experts before hand anyway.

Looks good, Swiller. I'm actually kinda amused, I just tonight started a 'zon myself with designs to make essentially the same build. I'm gonna read this thread like 10 more times and try to do as good a job with her!

@FB: +% elemental damage doesn't work with ranged attacks.

Nice one Swiller, makes it even harder to make up my mind between LF/FA or LF/PJ

Pffft, pure lightning is the only way to go.

I'd also like to know why you've got 20 in crit strike. Even if it is to deal with LI/PI's so you can use jab or whatever, with 1 point in it, it would still be L18, which is plenty of crit strike, considering the severely diminishing returns.

You might have been able to up your terrible light damage ;)

Congrats on the Matriach, good job without dying too.
I'd also like to know how the damage looks with Trangs Claws?

Very interesting choice of gear there, swiller. It's amazing how some stuff gets overlooked like that.

I've never done a LF/PJ zon, I was always worried that PJ wouldn't cut it in Hell. But the thought of poisoning someone and them keeling over a bit later ... I can see the amusement in that.

    Congratulations! :flowers:

This is the spring of zons, GG! I do wonder though, why do you need the AR? LF, CS nor PJ require AR to hit afaik.

Re: Matriarch Constance - Poison em' till they drop

Yup...Heskla ftw. That is supposed to be Charged Strike. I blame myself for typing mat threads in the wee hours of the morning.

That's an interesting thought with the Trang's gloves. But in the end, it was IAS and and +skills I was after. Sometime tonight I'll throw them on and check the difference in damage. But at the moment I can say that 42k takes down stuff awfully fast without the additional 25% from Trangs.

I was pleasantly surprised with the armor's performance as well. Initially the idea was to get IAS from Andariel's Visage and just use good old Duriel's Shell. But Obedience was available at level 53, and I was unwilling to wait another 20 levels for Andy's required level of 83. So I started digging and the Black Hades setup had merit. I thought the idea would be little more than that, but I liked it so much that it stuck.

In an earlier incarnation of this build, I went with only 15 in both Plague Javelin and Poison javelin. I've heard that is enough to be effective, but in my experience it just isn't. I think with 20 in both and +17 javelin and spear skills, the poison is just devastating. Usually if a critter's life did not dwindle down to nothing after a few seconds, it meant they had some resistance to poison.

You're right, they don't require AR. But I jab a lot, and sometimes I'll even throw ordinary javelins at retreating enemies. Mostly just mopping up what's left after LF/PJ has done most of the work.

    Thanks everyone! :flowers:

What players setting were you at? I had much higher poison damage with a zon(PJ Damage 71695-72029 over 19 seconds), and she was only effective at low players setting in hell.

With this one, players 1 in Hell. And like I said, usually if a monster's life didn't start dropping quickly and immediately, it meant they had some poison resistance. But I agree that it's probably not that useful at higher player settings.

Dear lord, how did you reach 72k damage? That's insane!

Re: Matriarch Constance - Poison em' till they drop

Yes, it was difficult at higher players (I went P8 all the way to Act 5). Killing beetles in Act 2 was awesome, as they dropped like rocks.

    Anyway, I had the following:

    Gear
    192% Titan's
Lidless Wall (thought about Spirit, but would have been alot more skill points and even less life)
    Peace Mage Plate
    30 Resist All Mara's
    Trang's Gloves
    BK & SoJ
    Arachnid Mesh
    Gore Rider's
7 Harpooonist's Skillers (all I had at the time)

Trang's do make a difference, as would a Bramble (especially Beta).

Edit: Forgot to add a huge congrats on the no deaths. I went for huge damage, so mine was very fragile and died way too often.

    Nice char!
Gratz on the safe passage throughout the entire questing, must be an accomplishment on it's own.

Another character to try out, maybe with Bramble and Trang's Claws as suggested for ultimate killing power.
    Overkill is always good. :badteeth:

    ??

I am fairly sure it does work since the poison damage is a skill based damage not a +elemental damage. If it were like venom or enchant yes the +% damage would not work on ranged attacks but only on the inital skill itself.

Oooh, Great, GG. Congratz on yout mat.
I just love poison as well, namely poison amazons! Awsome mat. Very inspiring.
What's her future plans? please do not retire her. :hide:

@flimflan: Are you sure trangs ad more damage?
I read a quide on another site, loong time ago, that youhad to have a very high evel of psn/plag jav before it started to be worthwhile to use trangs over a pair of lancers(although that guide used 3jav/20ias, which I find to be excellent gloves btw)

I need to play my new psn zon more!

Positive. I swapped out lancer's for trang's, and the difference was large. My PJ level was 41 (could be higher with more skillers, spirit monarch and different ammy).

Edit: In my list of equipment, which I can't edit any longer, I forgot the Harley.
