    I haven’t been around much lately. I’ve slowed down with D2 over the past 2 months. I’ve moved and started a new, very busy (but quite wonderful) job. The only downside is much less D2 time. Hopefully when the dust settles, I’ll be back and playing as much as ever. Its taken a while, but I’ve recently finished a new sorc that I’m really very fond of. I was skeptical when I started her, but she turned out better than I expected.

    This is a twist on the lightning sorceress who carries her own Infinity. I have very mixed emotions about the sorc’s lightning tree. Huge damage, and incredibly powerful, but the random damage and the slow FCR breakpoints of two traditional main skills (chain lightning and lightning) bug the heck out of me. Fortunately, the tree has two wonderful other offensive skills that are just the opposite. Nova and Charged bolt aren’t used as much, but they have a much tighter damage range and better FCR breakpoints. For me, they are vastly more fun to use. I’ve not seen them combined much before. For most people, if they sink 80+ points into the lite tree, they end up making a traditional lite sorc. I like this gal better – maybe not quite as fast and powerful, but more fun for me….

    Her name is the latin name for the Ring-Necked Duck. Common duck in winter through much of North America. For you Europeans, imagine a Tufted duck without the tuft, and that’s pretty much what it looks like. Very pretty.

    Thoughts:

    Short version: Lots of fun. CB and Nova rock.

    Long version:
    This is my 2nd attempt at a sorceress holding Infinity herself, and I think this is much more successful. The keys are getting to 86FHR, and using skills that don’t need as much FCR investment. I’m surprised you don’t see CB and Nova used together more. They complement each other beautifully. Nova is as good as it gets as a crowd-killer, even if the crowd is moderately spaced out. It is very rare for any of the waves in the throne room (even wave 2) to spread out enough that I can’t nail them all with a Nova. Nova sucks against single enemies/bosses, and that’s where Charged bolt shines. Against Baal, or a single straggler from Lister’s pack, CB melts them as fast as anything. Together (with the -67 ELR from infinity), they can handle anything. By forgoing chain lightning, the extra points are available to sink into Warmth. Having big warmth is fabulous. Its like a mini-Insight. She can take care of a wave of minions with nova (notorious mana-hog), and be nearly replenished before Baal drops the next wave. That way, the moron doesn’t need to hold insight. The HF/Reapers combo provides great safety, and allows him to kill a LI lister adequately fast.

    Dropping down to the 63FCR breakpoint didn’t feel like much of a sacrifice. She still teleports/novas/CBs plenty fast. I would much rather reach the 86FHR breakpoint than the 105 FCR breakpoint with this build. FHR is really key to keep her moving and out of trouble when she takes a bit of damage.

    Some unusual choices: Yes, I put points in energy. She doesn’t really need the extra life. I put them in early on, thinking I would re-spec them into vita, but never got around to it. I really like having ~1100 mana, just makes life simpler…

    Bloodfists aren’t typical caster gloves, but I think maybe they should be. 40 life and 30FHR is a pretty awesome combo, and the fact that its available on gloves with a level requirement of 9 is just silly. They’re great.

    Overall, I thought she was great. I think I’ll run baal with her up to the low-to-mid 90’s. I don’t think she’ll ever be quite as fast as my favorite lite sorc (crescent moon/spirit monarch/infinity on moron), but she’ll be close, and plenty of fun...

    Nicely done! The better FCR breakpoints with the charged bolt/nova combo is enticing.

    How would it be without Infinity? A Nova sorc is a real treat- I have a cow-running Nova sorc in 1.07 who is a blast. How was mana consumption?

    Your damage range of Nova (1643-2164) was remarkably close to that of my Magella which was 1652-2175. But you have Infinity and I was just using -ELR from Griffins/facet/Crescent Moon and the occasional application of a Lower Resist charge. If I ever yield to FAM temptation, an Infinity Nova sorc is a definite temptation! I also had mana problems without the use of a massive BO, but she also has strong ES use as well.

    I've had a lot of characters use Bloodfist gloves most of the game, with several using them as end-game gear. They really are incredible and in untwinked play, I'll make an effort to get them from Normal Andy if possible.

    @Purplelocust: I think without infinity it would be similar to any other single-tree sorc. Definitely do-able, especially if you have a lower-resist charge. Griffons/Crescent moon does a great job of getting enough -ELR (nearly as much as infinity/griffons), but you need a way to break immunities. I suspect that crescent moon/griffs/spirit shield and infinity on a merc with this skill plan would be even more powerful. The nice thing about this skill layout is that you have enough skill points to pump warmth up enough to alleviate a lot of mana worries.

    Have you considered replacing your CoH and a SoJ with a Skin of the Vipermagi and a rare fcr ring? Doing so would allow you to reach the next fcr bp, while maintaining the current fhr bp.

    Congrats. I know exactly what you mean about starting a new job, gets in the way of life. I like the character. I've been thinking of making a Lightning sorc and I may steal your idea and go Nova/CB.

    Skipjack- I'm sure that would work fine, though your damage would take a hit with 2 less skills, especially if you also had to replace a skiller to make up the resists/mana. I haven't tried it with this character. I had her planned with this gear from the beginning, so I really tried to play her the whole way through at 63FCR. For most of her levelling, her only sources of FCR were SotVM and an insight staff (with +3 Nova - a great levelling weapon). I don't think I've played a sorc with less than 105FCR since my early D2 days, and I expected it to be intolerable. It really wasn't at all.

    Sounds like an interesting combination of skills and equipment.

    I don't think I'd feel comfortable with needing to be up close to monsters, with no defense to speak of and no blocking at all. Hence the focus on FHR, I guess :)
