Dual-dreams are something I've been meaning to try for a while now, so I did it. It's no secret by now that it's an extremely potent combo, and when combined with Enchant can be just utterly devastating. Arien wanted to do something a little bit different though, and it complicated things.

She wanted to throw.

Some of you may be asking what the problem is with that. Well, the reason that dual-dream echantresses are so damn powerful is because Fire and Lightning Masteries get applies TWICE to melee attacks. Once at the time of *casting* (so when you cast Enchant, or just to the HS aura), and then they get applied again at the time of *striking*. Sadly, the case is not so with ranged attacks, as they do not get the secondary bonus from the *striking* part of the formula. MongoJerry explains it perfectly in his 1.10 Enchatress Guide, and I will link the relevant part in the spoiler below.

2. When the enchantress herself fights melee (e.g. with a sword), her enchant gets multiplied by an extra factor of her Fire Mastery. So, take Enchant's listed damage shown in the skill tab (which has already been multiplied by one factor of Fire Mastery) and then multiply by another factor of the enchantress's current Fire Mastery to find out how much fire damage a melee enchantress would deal. This is fairly easy to see, because the Lying Character Screen (LCS) actually reports the correct damage dealt by the enchantress when she melees. So the fire damage added by Enchant can be calculated for melee enchantresses with the following formula:

(Enchant base damage) * (Warmth synergy) * (Fire Mastery at time of enchanting) * (Fire Mastery at time of striking)

3. However, when the enchantress uses ranged attacks (bows, javelins, etc.), she does not receive the extra Fire Mastery bonus. Despite what the LCS reports, she only gets the straight Enchant damage added to her attacks. So, the enchantress actually deals less damage than the LCS reports. So the fire damage added by Enchant can be calculated for ranged enchantresses with the following formula:

(Enchant base damage) * (Warmth synergy) * (Fire Mastery at time of enchanting)

This is obviously for Enchant, but the same applies to Lightning Mastery and the Holy Shock Aura from 'Dream'. Another wrinkle is that elemental damage from items does not get scaled by masteries for ranged attacks. Lame.

That didn't stop Arien though, what's a little bit (well, a big bit actually) of damage lost compared to the ultimate style of whipping knives around? Nothing, that's what I say!


Let's first get to the stats/info and a full dump (with the fat trimmed), and then I'll get to some thoughts on the build.

The Journey

I don't remember much from Normal/Nightmare really. I just threw some standard (melee) twinking gear and a leaf staff on her and rushed her through without much thought. She reached Slayer at 43, and finished NM at 72. Leveled her up to 75 to equip Warshrikes (her final gear piece), overhauled her gear, and went for Hell.

Hell was doable on /p8, but we were going through knives way too quickly so I opted to put it down to /p3. I also kept a couple extra sets of Warshrikes in the cube so that I didn't have to go back to town every time I ran low.

She met basically no resistance at all in Act 1, working her way through and offing Andariel with ease. Act 2 gave us some fun in the Maggot Lair and Arcane Sanctuary (yes I just said that). It was fun getting big lines of monsters stuck behind the merc and then letting the pierce on the Warshrikes rip right through them. Duriel soon bit it, and Arien was off to the jungles. Man those flayers are quick! It was a bit tricky nailing them with knives, but luckily the pulse damage from HS was enough to take them out in short order anyways. :p Mephisto soon died and that marked a general shift in her play. Act 4 had monsters become much stronger, and also FI and LI monsters started to show up more. It only really became a problem though when we met up with an unbreakable FI/LI Hephasto.



Luckily the merc is more than capable on his own, so we let him deal with Hephasto while Arien picked off the stragglers. HF was Lem, btw.

We encountered another FI/LI in the CS, but the merc handled if just fine and soon we had made pin cushions out of seal bosses one, two, and three before heading off and meeting Diablo. He killed the merc but Arien was able to prevail on her own.

Act 5, though slightly more dangerous, also flew by in what felt like moments. We had to watch out for some of the stronger enemies like these gentlemen, but before she knew it Arien had killed Shenk, saved Anya, and used Warshrikes piercing attack to take out Nihlathak while he was occupied with the merc.

The ancients were a joke on /p3. Madawc was the first to fall, followed shortly by Korlic and then Talic. The trip through the WSK was equally uneventful, as were the waves. Even an FI/PI Lister and company didn't slow her down much.

You may have guessed it, but the Baal fight was also both quick and painless. Static him to half and then plink away while the merc tanked. Easy enough, she reached Matriarch at level 83:



Some Thoughts
- If you want to take FULL advantage of dual-dreams, this is not the build for you. You're sacrificing a TON of damage by going ranged. That said, she shredded Hell with no problems at /p3, so it is still a strong build for a playthrough.
- Her low life was *mostly* no problem. I had to watch how for physical-based ranged attackers like archers, but that's it really.
- She had a couple deaths, primarily from me teleporting recklessly. Once she has established a fighting position, she was extremely safe.
- This was a surprisingly fun build to play. It's great fun teleporting around and then filling bad guys with knives. It's also super satisfying lining monsters up and ripping Warshrikes through the whole lineup.
- Enchant was very helpful, both for damage (due to not getting the full benefits of the melee bonus), but also for AR. Infinity of course helped with that too.
- I definitely recommend this build if you want something a little different, even if it's not as powerful as it *could* be. If you can get passed leaving all that damage on the table, it's a very fun and effective character to play.

I tried to get screenshots that showed the action well, but they just didn't translate well. Here's a sloppily-played, poorly-planned, mistake-laden video instead!

8109 is a whole lot of strength! :eek: I love it, I'm planning to basically do the same thing but with dragon armour too. Is there a reason that you didn't? :) Also, there is something satisfying about killing Madawc with a throwing build, it feels like a 'throw off' :p

Stats have been fixed. :p

As for Dragon, I needed some survivability and resistances, and unless you're going dual-dragons it doesn't add a ton of damage anyways. Basically I felt like I had plenty of offense, so I used that slot to buff up the defenses a bit. And yes, it's nice giving Madawc a taste of his own medicine for once!

Lol I watched without sound earlier. Much better with it. I got pumped when she started throwing in time with the music at 0:55ish.

Wow, great character and thanks for the thorough write-up!

I still haven't made a throw-based character outside javazon, and that's definitely on the to-build list (which I need to return to at some point). I had been thinking dual throw Barb, but a variation of this looks much more interesting. Hmmm . . .

Wow, such a great build. Warshrike ThrowSorc has always been on my list of to-do characters, but I haven't gotten around to making one. I guess only relying on the Nova proc only doesn't really cut it?

Btw, have you tried out including Razortail for more pierce?

I made this girl some time ago, using 2x Dragon and HoJ, if you're looking for something with that runeword.

As hinted by @Pb_pal though, melee Dual Dream is considerably stronger. Bear Sorc remains the hardest hitting char per hit that I've ever played, there's something really satisfying about hitting them like a train for >70k damage with a single punch. :p

Dragon/HoJ was the combo that I was thinking of, but I was in my haste ignoring the throwing weapon :p

I tested it briefly and didn't notice much of a difference. Warshrike has 50% pierce, so Razortail would bring it up to eighty eight. Seems like it would be a big deal, but honestly she was powerful enough on /p3 that everything basically just died anyways, so I took the other bonuses that I could get from other gear and ran with it.
