Making Enigma

Making Enigma

I am considering making an Enigma, and I would like to know what the most versatile armor to make it in would be (not sure I would even think about making a Hammerdin). I currently have a 15% ED Mage plate that I'm thinking about using. I Guess my question is mostly will I miss the defense that could be there if I were to make it in an elite armor instead?

Thanks for any help.

My opinion -- if this is for your standard player versus monster paladin, defense isn't as important. You won't miss a little extra defense, and the benefit you'll get from putting the extra stat points into vitality outweighs any defense loss. For this reason, mage plates are actually a popular choice for paladin Enigmas.

My personal favorite choice is a Mage Plate for Player vs. Monster characters. If you're going to be dueling, then the defense could have a noticeable impact. However, for just playing the game, it's hardly anything to worry about.

Well APs have a much higher str requirement than mage plates, so less str needed=more points in vita, which really should outweigh a little bit of extra def, especially in pvm.

why not archon plate? doesnt it give better def?
Since Enigma has a really high +Str/level mod, people usually go with armors with minimal Str requirements. For example if you have it in a Breast Plate, you'll only need 30 Str to wear it and then you get some +50-70 to Str from it, getting you all the way to 100 without spending nearly any Stat points on it.

With Archon Plate, you'd have to get at least 100+ Str wear it in the first place.

It makes no sense to make it in a breastplate. You get enough +str from a torch, Annihilus, rings, amulets etc. (you can afford them all if you can afford a 2 HR runeword, else you have the wrong priorities ;)) to meet the reqs of a mage plate without any stat point investments into str.

SP player, no Anni or Torches. :)

But the point about using other equipment to boost Str to wear the Enigma still is a good one.

- Dusk Shroud would be best-buy between all of them.
Dusk has 77 str and gives 470 def,
Mage has 55 str and gives 260 def,
Archon has 103 str and gives 530 def.
- If you have 20 base + 20 Torch, 20 Anny that is alone 60 str. Invest 10 more and with Enigma you could use some Hevyer equipment like Monarch, Crown of Ages, an simmilar, depending of other parts etc.

- If you know you will strictly use your Enigma always only on that exact build than choose hevy or light, but Dusk is universal armor equipable by anyone and still gives solid protection.

Dusk Shrouds are really, really ugly, though. I'd never make an Enigma in one for that reason alone. :p

The extra ~200 defense for using a Dusk Shroud over a Mage Plate is pretty much useless on just about every build. Defense itself is only helpful in the 10k and greater range, so only those builds heading that route would worry about what base to put Enigma in. However since Enigma doesn't have an enhanced defense% on it that wouldn't be the armor you'd use anyway. As such, use whichever base you wish that 1) looks good and 2) doesn't require any points into strength at all to wear.

On that last point. Any superior high defense armor wins over a superior low defense armor. And since the RW ignores the base defense anyway (by plainly adding some) I think the 15 ED DS would be the overall best and most ugly choice for an Eni.

This is really the crux of the issue. As long as this is just PvM the def AND str requirements are almost completely irrelevent. Make the enigma in whatever armor you think looks best on your character. The only real difference between any of the armors in PvM other than looks is the run/walk penalty on medium and heavy armors but even that isn't such a big deal after you get +1 teleport.

Re: Making Enigma

well, dusk shrouds do change the appearance of the char ingame to almost naked (a frenzy barb needs his packs to show and his hair to flow! which is why i also use a circlet...)

Another thing: if you want to sell it later, make it in 15% ed superior. (better value) If you want to use it for a long time than non-superior is better (lower repair cost)
