    1. Make screenshots when your char is making the desired animation
    2. Chop the to right size
    3. Use a program that can generate animated gifs (almost every graphics program besides paint will do, I think :D)
    4. Annoy people with your new flashy avatar
    5. Get sued by blizzard because you used copyright protected materieal  (just joking)

Just hit the "print screen" button as fast as you can, you'll get about 4 to 5 frames per second atleast, which is enough to make a decent animation

Try google. I know I've seen free programs that do the frame capture work for you (much smoother results than spamming 'print screen' yourself). I used to have such a program for modding PS:Torment but I can't recall the name at the moment.

One place I would check is the Phrozen Keep - since modding D2 is their speciality I would imagine that sprite rippers and animation capturing tools would be floating around there somewhere. Hopefully the site still exists (I haven't been there in eons).

As far as the legality of ripping animations, I'm the last person to ask - I have no idea. If it's some harmless project for personal use (custom avatar or something) I doubt there are any legal issues.
