Making a Jack-of-all-trades pally

I'm lookin to make a Paladin that isn't specialized for PvP, PvM, or Ubers, but rather, a variant that is suitable for all 3. I mainly play with about 3 other people max on bnet (so players 4) and here is a list of gear I have for him (melee paladin). We usually clear chaos sanc/baal room/pit/and do ubers.

Grief PB
Shako
Duress AP
HoZ (not upped yet)
Highlords
Raven
Carrion
Dracs
Gores (can get Treks)
Dungo

Lots of life charms... also have Ptorch and Anni

So i'm not skimping on gear here, but then again, I don't have a CtA and im not looking to make a superbreed perfect paladin

I guess my choices lie between a Zealot and a smiter. If I make a zealot, I'm going to to use 1 point in smite. He will be better at PvM, and will still have a substantial amount of smite damage.

If i make a smiter, I'm going to use 1 point into zeal. He will be better at PvP and Ubers and still have a 5 hit zeal, but with poor AR. He will also have more defense and charge damage due to extra skill points that can be put into defiance and charge.

Which Paladin do u think has a better balance?

Also, do I up my HoZ in either case and do i stick with gores or use treks? Thanks in advance

Edit: Ahh I just noticed that Grief has ITD so AR is kind of useless (against bosses and players i would probably use smite)

I'm playing on ladder so I don't think I can afford a Doom. I would really like to use the gear i have.

1 point smite, the main dmg from smiting with grief comes from grief itself. Up the Hoz, and keep gores. Duress isn't a great pvp armor choice but it will have to work I guess(don't know the rest of your budget). Might think about swapping out the Cwing for a dwarf/bk/nice rare in pvp.

hmm i can replace duress with another armor... perhaps stone?? i thought the OW for PvP with 40 fhr and resist and the 15% cb for pvm would make a good jack of all trades armor. Also, when u say 1pt smite, does that mean go with the zealot heavy build? And does the HoZ absolutely have to be upped?

Also max holy bolt and FoH and maybe blessed hammer. you said jack of all trades right? Then use a one-point zeal and smite and get holy shock too you you can zeal with a cracked dagger and holy shock in chaos sanc.

Duress is better than Stone, but Engima would be about the best choice there is telesmite/telezeal is very effective, and don't forget all the str you save that goes right back into vit. At least a few levels in zeal to be sure you will need the extra AR in pvp, not so much in pvm because ITD on grief and you can smite bosses/champions/uniques. But that is more of a personal choice I would rather have good AR and good Zeal dmg in pvm because Zeal attacks up to 5 targets at once, when Smite hits one and also knocks them back. Up'ing the Hoz will give you a little bump in dmg, def, etc if you can up it, I would highly suggest it, I'm sure you can get by without it, but your going to want to smite and if you go with 1 point in smite you might as well get all of the extra dmg that you can.

Holy Bolt/FoH/Blessed Hammer/Holy Shock...80 skill points in those(not talking about 1pointers) so you will have a crappy fanat/smite/zeal/holyshield/defiance/res lighting...just doesn't make much since to me.

Re: Making a Jack-of-all-trades pally

the main problem I have with upping the HoZ is the steep str req. Without upping i can get away with 54 base str. If I up it, then I'm going to need 107 base str. Thats 159 (bo-able life) missing. Then again, I'm not wielding a CtA just yet so I don't know which way to go. I think i'm going to go with a normal HoZ and see how it performs, and if it is lacking, i'll adjust my stats and up it.

Safetypro has a nice guide that has calculations for smite with different gear set ups, you might want to search for it and see if you think its worth uping it or not. The time being it might not actually be worth it, until you can get an Enigma then the extra dmg with no str would def be worth it.
