    Magnificent Fallen Portrait

Those poor Fallen. Stunted and cursed by an abusive Azmodan, will they ever get the respect they deserve?

Maybe restoring their honor will be a future quest in DIII? -probably not. :D

Anyways, welcome to my next artistic endeavor . . .

Before I go into a painting, I like to take a little time and explore the subject a little bit.

Fore example, the Fallen have a nice design for a head, but the structure is a little different than the average human's.
The facial features are squashed together and the nose resembles that of a bat. Notice also the very small eyes in a much bigger socket.

I try and understand the underlying structure enough so I can turn the head in my mind and be able to reasonably understand it from any direction.

I hope this one doesn't take as long as my last painting.

Their new designs truly are cool, and you have made a good impression of it as well.

They look a bit like piranhas, actually, the face shape...

    Re: Magnificent Fallen Portrait

I just noticed something the other day. When I was looking at the big group picture of all the Fallen together, I had mistaken the creature closest to the viewer as another Fallen, but with different skin tones.
-It's actually one of the hounds!

So I take it back, Fallen noses don't look like something from a bat. They're smoother, yes, like a piranha.

    Good catch, Leord!

These are a continuation of my exploration of the Fallen. I think I've gotten closer to how their heads are put together, but there are a few tricky things left. (I imagine there's some Blizzard employee smirking at my attempt to reverse-engineer his beast.)

For example, I had earlier counted the nearest creature, in the fallen group shot, to be another fallen. When I studied the picture more closely, I discovered that it was one of the hounds I was looking at. So, they don't have bat-like noses like I thought.

this time I'm trying to turn the head in my mind and put it down on paper. I wanted to explore different things such as expression. (like the one in the lower right corner who looks like he's celebrating his birthday.) Small (or large) variations in their expressions can bring a lot to a character.

    It's done!

So . . . easy process, right!? Do two pages of sketches and the final piece just pops out, right!?

I apologize to those who were hoping to see more of a progression on this piece. I sat down one night and began doodling without really focusing on anything, and before I knew it, he was practically done.

Time flies when I'm having fun. This piece is proof of that. It wasn't until about 3-4 hours into the piece when I suddenly realized it was done and I had failed to save out progression pieces.

Small bump. I've fixed the links to the image so they're viewable again.

    Re: Magnificent Fallen Portrait

softshack doesn't mention it, but his amazing piece is featured in the Blizzard fan art gallery. Very nice creature study, indeed. ;)

EDIT: Though, it is a bit confusing that it is credited to Najmul Osmani (Naj). A pseudonym, softshack?

Ha, Ha! I never noticed that before. I'll have to send them a note to correct it.

Edit: It looks like they swapped my artwork with another guys and messed both of ours up.
