Magic Items - Grabbin' Them Quick

OK, a big reason I don't like playing with multiple players is that I seem to always get the short end of the stick when it comes to grabbing magic items from bosses. It seems whatever I do, all the good stuff is snatched up before me. I see a unique wand and some random barb grabs it and disconnects.

Any tricks or tips to make sure I get a share of the booty? I try and stand as close to the boss as I can when he is about to die and hit the 'see all items button' to see what falls.

Also - is there any etiquette here? Or is it a complete free for all. I wish duplicate items fell for each player involved in the slayings! One for each!

Anyways, any tips would be appreciated. :alright:

In BNet: it's a free for all (maybe try to let someone kill get the killing blow)

in SPF MP: drops are regulated (last night a Mal dropped, there was no rush to pick it up, we all went to the PF and chatted about who should get it)

I guess being quick is the only thing you can do :( I have missed out on alot of potentially decent drops in baal games myself so many times I rarely bother anymore. And unless you're playing with friends on bnet, you can pretty much expect a free for all situation all the time when playing with others.

Also when playing in public battle.net, many people are are cheating and using hacks, one of which instantly picks up droppped items.

Pubbies are for exp and quests (except hellforge).

Solo for drops. Or join rush games (for player count) and mf on your own.

if no one is cheating, you can get them in confusion with this neat trick:

stand right south of the boss (under him)

when he dies, unslot your belt and reslot it, dropping the three rows of stamina pots you of course put there for this occasion
now hold ALT and grab the important stuff (quick grabbers will net themselves some stamina pots)

u can also drop your cube for more confusion, but then you'd have problems with picking up items yourself :p

For that to work, you'd have to have a full inventory so that the pots would drop on the ground. So, keep an empty cube in your otherwise full inventory. When the boss is about to die, unslot your belt and drop pots, then pickup items to put in your cube. Log out with an item in your cursor if you have to.

Just open a town portal, quick grabber will find themselves in town. It won't stop bnet kids with p****t hack though.

I've found that grabbing items in public games is a nightmare and almost impossible (if you have any sense of decency). If I wanted items I'd always go solo since... well honestly, it's dog eat dog out there. I don't think anyone would pass on a unique Ceremonial Javelin or something just because he isn't an amazon or something.

Apart from saying that some kind of roll system like in WoW could be great but doesn't exist, you CAN stumble upon nice people who won't grab every single caster item while they're a barbarian. They're just very rare. Playing with twinked people or small (2-3) games helps to reduce greed.

I can't wait to do an 8 players public game for Diablo himself. Everyone will probably mass right under him and start clicking wildly to grab items and then he'll do his lightning breath to one-shot 'em all.... :)

Well, the D2 loot system is *censored* to begin with. It's probably why they revamp the loot system in D3. Everyone get their own set of loots, nobody get to steal anything.

"Censored"?

How so?

One of the big reasons why I only play Single Player. Here's how Multiplayer Baal runs typically work: Anything that drops pre-Baal belongs to the host. Baal drops rotate based on the order in which players have joined the series of runs. So, when it's your turn, you can take any or all of the drops, and leave the rest on the ground. Quite civilized.

you might as well form the same kind of community online and run baal with people you know...
no reason to stay in SP

Actually, several reasons to stay in SP:

1) No bots
2) ATMA for muling
3) Static maps for magic finding
4) No lag, ever
5) Ability to create games as quickly as desired
6) No "gib it4ms!" spam
7) /players x setting
8) characters never expire
9) characters never get moved to non-ladder
10) No worries about rune poofing

hm, you have a point :)
Then again: 11) no high runes :p (hardly any..)

but how do you guys get together? i've played some SP for a while here and didn't really see a place where games were put together.

Re: Magic Items - Grabbin' Them Quick

about 11)

there are coupla zods in the sp community... that can be described as the miracle that is LK chest running

also, go to the MP section of the SP forum here, if interested... you'll need an SPF trader profile to join MP games there (which are quite frequent)
also, look at details regarding RWM/RRM mods

True, not a lot of high runes. I've found a vex from an urn in Ancient Tunnels, but that's my highest. There are some ridiculously dedicated Lower Kurast runners and Hell Forge runners who have multiple bers, but I'm not personally that focused. Thyiad and a few others have Infinity, I believe Liquid Evil has a Zod'ed 1.07 eth Tomb Reaver with crazy damage, and there are several other leet items that are the exception to the norm. I'm not convinced that eBotD, nigma, anni, and torches etc are necessary to play at a high level anyway. My frenzy barb will somehow make do with my self-found Shaeffer's Hammer and Stormlash, my blizz sorc will get by with self-found full Tal's set, my strafer will get by with self-found Windforce.

He's referring to lower Kurast chest run. Some of the chest there have a chance to drop many items at once. I usually found 2 of those per run. They have a decent chance to drop HR on /player 8 setting.
