Magic Item synergies

Worthless loot has always been a real peeve of mine in diablo 2. Magic being worthless before even normal was over really wasn't cutting it for me, though I played the game anyway.

My idea is this: cap all/some abilities that items can grant, say life steal at 50%. When a character wears two pieces of gear that grant life steal, no matter their percentage, the player gets 50% life leech.

With a large variety of such abilities, it would still be valuable to get good loot (you could have max everything if each mod you got was from a single item), but it would make even a ring of 1% leech worth something.

If going all the way to max is unnerving, perhaps to half (25% life leech) or an arbitrary benchmark (based on ability) would be better.

Unique items that grant a variety of bonuses, even bonuses that arent that great, would be valuable, just not optimal. Incorperating uniques into it all though makes me think arbitrary benchmarks are better than max.

Thoughts?

Seems to take away from the idea of Set Items, but I think it would be a decent idea on a more toned down level. Maybe something like if you have two Leech Rings equipped then they each get another +5% or even a multiplier bonus of sorts.

Honestly, though, it seems like it's asking for a bit too much out of magic items. One of the wonders of Diablo 1 & 2, at least to me, was having to wade through all the crap to find something worthwhile. It made finding what you were looking for THAT much more pleasing.

I think someones mentioned this before about uniques having a secret set where if you get the right combo of uniques together you get a bonus which Im ok with but we dont really need to make useless items useful their sole job is to make the better items seem greater plus we dont want to be hoarding even more in our chest/bank.The only way I see to make useless items useful beyond what I mentioned is the ability to break items down to use in crafting or something.
