    Lucky to be alive

    Warning, a bit graphic

I don't think I will ever go swimming without inspecting the pool with a keen eye.

Although, if anatomy serves me right, it wouldn't be the small but the large, no?

That was about 70 miles south of where I live...we had it all over our talk radio station this morning. Our apartment manager was changing the filters in our pool today...

i didn't click on the link but if it's what i think it is then you are right...it is the large...this isn't the first time something like that has happened.

why don't they screw down the covers? i always check them...even if i am not going in the pool.

A few years back a girls leg got caught in the floor drain and she drowned just 3 inches from the surface.

Our drain has a heave metal grate with four big bolts holding it down. The pull on it is incredible when we have to test it(it raises to a few hundred PSI).

That is the most horrific thing that I have heard in a long time. I would have never believed something like that could happen.

I've heard about it happening before, I can't think of a way to say it turns my stomach without it sounding like poor taste, but thats the way it affects me, really terrible

I share the same sentiment about things like this...

I guess it's good to be alive, but I wouldn't look forward to living the way she'll have to.:undecided:

Hmm I would say this article doesnt give enough information. It´s also full of contradictions.

    1. I have kind of a hard time understanding how " all the intestines" would be sucked out. Frankly i dont believe it. The intestines isn't exactly floating around freely in the abdomen. They are somewhat adherent to other organs and to the abdominal wall. There are several vessels that would get damaged when extracting the intestine in that extremely viloent way. You would get such severe hemmorrhage if "all the intestines were somhow sucked out backwards. That is a cartoon explanation. One possibillity is of course that the a large part of the abdominal wall was damaged then i guess most of the bowels could escape that way.

    2. The description of the tear in the rectum is probably just that. A tear in the rectum; a severe injury since it occurred traumatically. It shouldnt be life-threatening however if you get to a hospital fast. According to the article they had to make a colostomy at the hospital, eg they remove all of the colon and rectum (large intestine), so i guess the trauma must've have been affecting a bit more than just the rectum. And yes you can live a perfectly ordinary life with a colostomy. Ask many patients with ulcerative colitis for example.

    3. The article mentions that she now has to be fed intravenously for the rest of her life. This is a very odd statement in this context. Either she has some remaining viable bowel (very likely almost all of the small intestine) and then she will be able to eat and drink and get enough nutrients the normal way. That is after she has left childhood. Since she is a growing person she probably will need some extra nutrients added intravenously at times to be sure she grows as normal.
And what was the use of the colostomy again? If she hasnt any functioning bowel at all left and she just have to get fed intravenously there really isnt much use of a colostomy at all.

All in all a very tragic accident, that could and should have been avoided. I don't think the article presents what happended correctely however and hopefully the little girl can live a happy life.
