Looking for a complement to an Assassin...

A friend and I are going to play through D2 over a LAN. We're both relatively new at this game so we're not extremely knowledgable on certain things.

He's making an Assassin and is going to concentrate on skills that increase his melee capability the most (DPS, weapon block, etc.) especially in the shadow discipline tree. Unfortunately he's at home right now so I don't know exactly what he intends to do as far as point allocation goes.

I need a class that complements this well. Although there are only two of us, we usually play using the /players 8 setting, so keep that in mind, I guess. I'm basically looking for any builds you can think of that would make up for the Assassin's inadequacies. However, I'd really prefer that it not be a Paladin, because that's what I use in our other game (Where he's a sorceress and I'm, of course, a paladin).

My first character was a melee Assassin and the first time I teamed with a Zon that had freezing arrow I was in melee heaven. Maybe a type of Magezon?

Amazons make great compliments (any type, as long as you both aren't the same element). Druids and Barbs work well as melee buddies for the life boost. Your friend will want maxed (or at least one point in) Death Sentry for any of those three to work.

The long and short is that anything can work. Try to avoid curse overrides (CoS and curses interfere), and beware of competition for corpses with Death Sentry.
