Little kids and karate.

Little kids and karate.

I saw a tv commericial today advertising martial arts instruction for kids. It showed a girl around 6 years old doing various training routines, before switching to grainy black and white footage of the same girl out riding her bike as a man steps ominously out of a car. While saying "We hope you never need it, but isn't it good to have it in case you do?" It then shows the girl assuming a fighting stance and yelling "Kiyah!"

That's really bad advice isn't it?

So what do you think her chances of defeating him in hand to hand combat are? Keep in mind, she's a black belt!

Depends on how old she is.

If she's still only 6 years old, then she's got no chance.

If she's 16, or 20, then she's got a good chance of kicking the crap out of your ordinary pervert. Assuming she paid attention in class. And the guy doesn't have a gun.

Martial arts training takes years, and has best results when starting young.

karate should not be advertised as primarily a method of self defense. There are tons of classes for that.

Karate is a form of martial arts and should practiced as an art.

Martial Arts can be used effectively for combat, but only if you train for that purpose.

Well, she may not have been 6 exactly, but certainly under 10.

The kid's program at the dojo I was at for a while (Not Karate, eew) focused more on evasion, disablement, and escape than on standing and fighting. They were always realistic with the kids about their chances at fighting off someone who outweighs them 3 to 1.

That said, I've found karate to be a festering cesspool of self-proclaimed "teachers" with no scruples, training, or common sense who'll tell kids anything to make them feel happy about these lessons so their overworked/underworked perents will keep sending them to get them out of the house for an hour.

Karate is to Martial Arts what Scientology is to Religeon. Just my opinion.

That's a rather extreme, and entirely misguided rant.

Karate is probably the best known martial art in the west, so it's not surprising that there's a lot of poseurs out there claiming to be able to teach something they can't.

That doesn't mean Karate itself is fake.

Personally, I would never rely on a "martial art" to save my butt in the world today. There's a reason why it's proclaimed an "art". It's because guns took over. No one says target practice is an "art".

All children should be outfitted with a suicide bomber's backpack. As soon as the guy bundles her into his Pinto, she takes them both to the other side. BOOOMMM

Would the children be entitled to 72 virgins? Or would they get the Jihadi Happy Meal version?

Many police departments used to think teaching women self-defense was a bad idea since men could so easily overpower women and the women would just piss them off. Well, that has been succinctly disproven. Proper/realistic training would be perfectly fine for kids this young, but if they are 6, I imagine the proper training would not involve actually facing off against the guy.

Though, have you guys ever seen 3 Ninjas? Those kids kicked some butt.

As mentioned little kids really don't have a chance against a full grown male(or female for that matter).

I'd say over 12 could cause enough pain to make a guy want to leave pretty quick though.

Who ever said there are a lot of fakes out there is right though, lots of places teach you 'moves' without telling you how/when to apply them or worse yet the places that basically teach you an elaborate dance to get to your next belt.
